    El creciente interés existente en la actualidad por la investigación en el campo del material particulado atmosférico, se debe a la identificación de efectos adversos de este contaminante sobre la salud y los ecosistemas. El conocimiento de la composición química de las partículas que se encuentran en el aire es importante desde el punto de vista epidemiológico y técnico, ya que permite determinar el potencial efecto en la salud humana por la presencia de sustancias tóxicas y cancerígenas adheridas a este diminuto material. La razón más importante que motiva el estudio de estos compuestos, tanto en la cantidad como en el tipo, son los peligros para la salud que presentan o pueden presentar las exposiciones a largo plazo. En este estudio se realizó la cuantificación de hidrocarburos aromáticos poli cíclicos (HAP) presentes en muestras de material particulado fracción respirable PM2.5 del aire de la ciudad de Cúcuta - Norte deSantander- Colombia, inicialmente la materia orgánica presente en el material particulado PM2.5 se extrajo por ultrasonido con DCM como solvente de extracción,seguido de la concentración en un rotaevaporador, obteniéndose el extracto global,parte del cual se sometió a un proceso de fraccionamiento en una columna de silicagel ,obteniéndose finalmente tres fracciones. El contenido del extracto global y las tres fracciones se analizó en un cromatografo de gases Agilent 6890 plus con detector FIDpara realizar la cuantificación de los HAP presentes en el material particulado PM2.5.Entre los HAPs  identificados se encuentran: Naftaleno, Fluoreno, Fenantreno, Benzo(a)antraceno, Pireno, Dibenzo(a,h) antraceno e Indeno (1,2,3,c-d-pireno),estos HAPs son compuestos  tóxicos, mutágenos y carcinógenos para los animales y los seres humanossegún la agencia internacional de investigación del cáncer (IARC

    Evaluating web-based static, animated and interactive maps for injury prevention

Maps and geovisualization tools must be developed with the user-group in mind. User-needs assessment and usability testing are crucial elements in the iterative process of map design and implementation. This study presents the results of a usability test of static, animated and interactive maps of injury rates and socio-demographic determinants of injury by a sample of potential end-users in Toronto, Canada. The results of the user-testing suggest that different map types are useful for different purposes and for satisfying the varying skill level of the individual user. The static maps were deemed to be easy to use and versatile, while the animated maps could be made more useful if animation controls were provided. The split-screen concept of the interactive maps was highlighted as particularly effective for map comparison. Overall, interactive maps were identified as the preferred map type for comparing patterns of injury and related socio-demographic risk factors. Information collected from the user-tests is being used to expand and refine the injury web maps for Toronto, and could inform other public health-related geo-visualization projects.Partial funding for this project was provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research

    Genomic surveillance of Acinetobacter baumannii in the Philippines, 2013-2014

In the Philippines, rates of carbapenem resistance and multidrug resistance are above 50%. We undertook a genomic study of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii in the Philippines to characterize the population diversity and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. Methods: We sequenced the whole genomes of 117 A. baumannii isolates recovered by 16 hospitals in the Philippines between 2013 and 2014. From the genome sequences, we determined the multilocus sequence type, presence of acquired determinants of antimicrobial resistance and relatedness between isolates. We also compared the phenotypic and genotypic resistance results. Results: Carbapenem resistance was mainly explained by acquisition of the class-D beta-lactamase gene bla(OXA-23). The concordance between phenotypic and genotypic resistance to imipenem was 98.15%, and it was 94.97% overall for the seven antibiotics analysed. Twenty-two different sequence types were identified, including 7 novel types. The population was dominated by the high-risk international clone 2 (i.e. clonal complex 92), in particular by ST195 and ST208 and their single locus variants. Using whole-genome sequencing, we identified local clusters representing potentially undetected nosocomial outbreaks, as well as multi-hospital clusters that indicated interhospital dissemination. Comparison with global genomes suggested that the establishment of carbapenem-resistant international clone 2 in the Philippines is likely the result of clonal expansion and geographical dissemination, and at least partly explained by inadequate hospital infection control and prevention. Discussion: This is the first extensive genomic study of carbapenem-resistant A. baumannii in the Philippines, and it underscores the importance of hospital infection control and prevention measures to contain high-risk clones.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    The Prevalence of Latent Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Infection Based on an Interferon-γ Release Assay: A Cross-Sectional Survey Among Urban Adults in Mwanza, Tanzania.

    One third of the world's population is estimated to be latently infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (LTBI). Surveys of LTBI are rarely performed in resource poor TB high endemic countries like Tanzania although low-income countries harbor the largest burden of the worlds LTBI. The primary objective was to estimate the prevalence of LTBI in household contacts of pulmonary TB cases and a group of apparently healthy neighborhood controls in an urban setting of such a country. Secondly we assessed potential impact of LTBI on inflammation by quantitating circulating levels of an acute phase reactant: alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) in neighborhood controls. The study was nested within the framework of two nutrition studies among TB patients in Mwanza, Tanzania. Household contacts- and neighborhood controls were invited to participate. The study involved a questionnaire, BMI determination and blood samples to measure AGP, HIV testing and a Quantiferon Gold In tube (QFN-IT) test to detect signs of LTBI. 245 household contacts and 192 neighborhood controls had available QFN-IT data. Among household contacts, the proportion of QFT-IT positive was 59% compared to 41% in the neighborhood controls (p = 0.001). In a linear regression model adjusted for sex, age, CD4 and HIV, a QFT-IT positive test was associated with a 10% higher level of alpha-1-acid glycoprotein(AGP) (10(B) 1.10, 95% CI 1.01; 1.20, p = 0.03), compared to individuals with a QFT-IT negative test. LTBI is highly prevalent among apparently healthy urban Tanzanians even without known exposure to TB in the household. LTBI was found to be associated with elevated levels of AGP. The implications of this observation merit further studies

    Radiofrequency-based treatment in therapy-related clinical practice – a narrative review. Part I : acute conditions

They are used to reduce pain and inflammation and enhance tissue healing. Although these agents have generally become less popular in contemporary therapy practice, surveys have shown that some of these modalities are still reasonably widely used. Objective: To review the evidence for the use of non-invasive low frequency RFs (30 kHz–30 MHz) in therapy-related clinical practice. Major findings: All peer reviewed therapy-related clinical studies published in English and concerning low frequency RF were sought. Identified literature was divided into acute and chronic segments based on their clinical area and analysed to assess the volume and scope of current evidence. The studies on acute conditions were reviewed in detail for this paper. One hundred twenty clinical studies were identified, of which 30 related to acute conditions. The majority of studies employed Pulsed Shortwave Therapy (PSWT). Twenty-two studies out of 30 were related to conditions of pain and inflammation, seven to tissue healing and one to acute pneumothorax. No studies were identified on frequencies other than shortwave. Conclusions: Evidence for and against RF-based therapy is available. There is reasonable evidence in support of PSWT to alleviate postoperative pain and promote postoperative wound healing. Evidence for other acute conditions is sparse and conflicting. A general lack of research emphasis in the non-shortwave RF band is evident, with studies on acute conditions almost non-existent. Further and wider research in this area is warranted.Peer reviewe

    New prioritized value iteration for Markov decision processes

    The problem of solving large Markov decision processes accurately and quickly is challenging. Since the computational effort incurred is considerable, current research focuses on finding superior acceleration techniques. For instance, the convergence properties of current solution methods depend, to a great extent, on the order of backup operations. On one hand, algorithms such as topological sorting are able to find good orderings but their overhead is usually high. On the other hand, shortest path methods, such as Dijkstra's algorithm which is based on priority queues, have been applied successfully to the solution of deterministic shortest-path Markov decision processes. Here, we propose an improved value iteration algorithm based on Dijkstra's algorithm for solving shortest path Markov decision processes.     Mapping genetic determinants of host susceptibility to Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infection in mice.

    Background: P. aeruginosa is one of the top three causes of opportunistic human bacterial infections. The remarkable variability in the clinical outcomes of this infection is thought to be associated with genetic predisposition. However, the genes underlying host susceptibility to P. aeruginosa infection are still largely unknown. Results: As a step towards mapping these genes, we applied a genome wide linkage analysis approach to a mouse model. A large F2 intercross population, obtained by mating P. aeruginosa-resistant C3H/HeOuJ, and susceptible A/J mice, was used for quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping. The F2 progenies were challenged with a P. aeruginosa clinical strain and monitored for the survival time up to 7 days post-infection, as a disease phenotype associated trait. Selected phenotypic extremes of the F2 distribution were genotyped with high-density single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) markers, and subsequently QTL analysis was performed. A significant locus was mapped on chromosome 6 and was named P. aeruginosa infection resistance locus 1 (Pairl1). The most promising candidate genes, including Dok1, Tacr1, Cd207, Clec4f, Gp9, Gata2, Foxp1, are related to pathogen sensing, neutrophils and macrophages recruitment and inflammatory processes.     Diffuse white matter loss in a transgenic rat model of cerebral amyloid angiopathy

    Diffuse white matter (WM) disease is highly prevalent in elderly with cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD). In humans, cSVD such as cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) often coexists with Alzheimer’s disease imposing a significant impediment for characterizing their distinct effects on WM. Here we studied the burden of age-related CAA pathology on WM disease in a novel transgenic rat model of CAA type 1 (rTg-DI). A cohort of rTg-DI and wild-type rats was scanned longitudinally using MRI for characterization of morphometry, cerebral microbleeds (CMB) and WM integrity. In rTg-DI rats, a distinct pattern of WM loss was observed at 9 M and 11 M. MRI also revealed manifestation of small CMB in thalamus at 6 M, which preceded WM loss and progressively enlarged until the moribund disease stage. Histology revealed myelin loss in the corpus callosum and thalamic CMB in all rTg-DI rats, the latter of which manifested in close proximity to occluded and calcified microvessels. The quantitation of CAA load in rTg-DI rats revealed that the most extensive microvascular Aβ deposition occurred in the thalamus.
