Animation in the Core of Dystopia: Ari Folman's The Congress
[EN] Ari Folman's The Congress (2013) borrows freely from Stanisaw Lem's dystopian view in his Sci-fi novel The Futurological Congress (1971) to propose the gradual dissolution of the human into an artificial form, which is animation. By moving the action of the novel from a hypothetical future to contemporary Hollywood, Ari Folman gives CGI animation the role of catalyst for changes not only in the production system, but for human thought and, therefore, for society. This way, the film ponders the changing role of performers at the time of their digitalization, as well as on the progressive dematerialization of the film industry, considering a dystopian future where simulation fatally displaces reality, which invites relating The Congress with Jean Baudrillard's and Alan Cholodenko's theses on how animating technologies have resulted in the culture of erasing. Moreover, this article highlights how Lem's metaphor of the manipulation of information in the Soviet era is transformed in the second part of The Congress into a vision of cinema as a collective addiction, relating it to Alexander Dovzhenko's and Edgar Morin's speculative theories of total film - which come close to the potentialities of today's Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. In addition, although The Congress is a disturbing view of film industry and animating technologies, its vision of film is nostalgically retro as it vindicates an entire tradition of Golden Age animation that transformed the star system into cartoons, suggesting the fictionalization of their lives and establishing a postmodern continuum between animation and film.Lorenzo Hernández, MC. Homicide Profiles Based on Crime Scene and Victim Characteristics
One of the current trends in homicide research includes developing works based on scientific study and empirical evidence, which offer conclusions that can be used in an operational manner during police investigations. The objective of this study was to identify homicide characteristics from behaviors carried out on the crime scene and victim characteristics associated with those of the perpetrators of these crimes in Spain. The sample consisted of 448 homicide cases from the database of the Homicide Revision Project led by the Office of Coordination and Studies of the Secretary of State and Security. After creating six classification tree models, it was found that the modus operandi of the aggressor and the victim characteristics may permit hypothesizing about the demographic characteristics of the perpetrator (gender, age, and country of origin), his/her criminal record, and the type of relationship with the victim. Furthermore, the importance of the study of victimology during a criminal investigation is highlighted, as it may indirectly offer information about the potential perpetrator. The findings of this study suggest that criminal profiling contributes notably to the decision-making process to establish more rigorous suspect prioritization, improve the management of human resources and materials, and increase the efficiency of criminal investigations
Zepo and the Films About the Spanish Civil War
[EN] Although there are many live-action films about the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath, Zepo is the first Spanish animated film that deals with this period. This article will focus on Zepo's contributions to Spanish cinema on Francoism (1936-75), relating it to some of the main works on this period.Lorenzo Hernández, MC. (2018). Animated Jams: the Secret Joy of Collective Films
[EN] This article presents an overview on a rare genre from independent animation, the animated `jams¿ or collective films, where all invited authors are free to contribute creatively to the ensemble. Animated `jams¿ have, therefore, a great power to free the imagination, so that the results are virtually unrepeatable by another group of animators, much less through a planned work system. Therefore, animated `jams¿ stimulate innovation, leading to experimental films that achieve notoriety at cinema and animation festivals because of their originality. Musicality, absurd humour, improvisation and abstraction are common features of these art films, where any narrative will remain in the background. Several examples of this unusual genre are discussed, from Marv Newland¿s bold proposal to produce the film Anijam (Newland, 1984) ¿ which shows a strong influence of the surrealistic `exquisite corpse¿ ¿ to learning experiences using the animated `jam¿ as a strategy to introduce students to animation, often coordinated by renowned animators who share their techniques and procedures in the workshops. The article will also pay attention to a singular figure, Dr Miquel Guillem, who significantly supported the realization of animated `jams¿ at Universitat Politècnica de València, as a teaching methodology that promotes collective work. Furthermore, this article will gather first-hand the production process of one of these `jams¿: The Cat Dances with its Shadow (Lorenzo, 2012).Lorenzo Hernández, MC. (2016).
Tunable ring resonator filter for OFDM Transmission systems
A novel tunable filter is theoretically demonstrated. It is based on a ring resonator with an amplifier and a noise filter in the loop. This optoelectronic
device has potential as a high-sensitivity receiver and as a tunable demultiplexer in OFDM transmission systems.Publicad
Creating digital stories to develop EFL learners' skills
Just as the technological world has evolved rapidly in recent decades, the educational paradigm has similarly undergone important changes that have led to the promotion of creative thinking skills and abilities. These are of particular importance in the learning of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This is based on the idea that the learning of a foreign language is strongly determined by the thinking process involved. Most children are digital natives and education ought to be adapted to this condition. This Final Degree Project will firstly reflect on the relationship between knowledge and its processes as applied to Second Language Learning in the primary school classroom. Secondly, a practical application based on this foundation will be considered, taking into account a technological approach that adapts to the new currents and methodologies of learning, typical of the current educational paradigm by creating new, engaging and motivating communication contexts through digital storytelling
