    COMET: a Lagrangian transport model for greenhouse gas emission estimation ? forward model technique and performance for methane

    International audienceThe Lagrangian transport model COMET has been developed to evaluate emission estimates based on atmospheric concentration observations. This paper describes the model and its application in modelling the methane concentrations at the European stations Cabauw and Macehead. The COMET model captures in most cases both synoptic and diurnal variations of the concentrations as a function of time and in absolute size quite well. The explained variability by COMET of the mixed layer concentration for Cabauw varies from 50% to 84%; for all hourly observations in 2002 the explained variability is 71% with a RMSE of 112 ppb. The explained variability for Macehead is 48%. The most important model parameters were tested for their influence on model performance, but in general the model is not very sensitive to variations within acceptable limits. For a regionally and locally polluted continental site the COMET model shows only a small bias and a moderate random error, and therefore is considered to capture the influence of the sources on the concentration variations quite well. It is therefore concluded that inverse methods and more specifically the COMET model is suitable to be applied in deriving independent estimates of greenhouse gas emissions using Source-Receptor relationships

    Optical and Thermal-Transport Properties of an Inhomogeneous d-Wave Superconductor

    We calculate transport properties of disordered 2D d-wave superconductors from solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, and show that weak localization effects give rise to a finite frequency peak in the optical conductivity similar to that observed in experiments on disordered cuprates. At low energies, order parameter inhomogeneities induce linear and quadratic temperature dependencies in microwave and thermal conductivities respectively, and appear to drive the system towards a quasiparticle insulating phase.Comment: 5 pages,3 figure

    Sinds 2005 is TransForum betrokken bij een praktijkproject in de Noordelijke Friese Wouden (het project NFW) waarin samen met boeren, bestuurders, overheden en maatschappelijke groepen wordt gezocht naar mogelijkheden om de beoogde zelfsturing vorm en inhoud te geven. Om voor milieukwaliteitdoelen een onderbouwd antwoord te kunnen geven heeft TransForum naast het praktijkproject NFW een meer analytisch gericht wetenschappelijk project ondersteund waarin een operationeel meetinstrument is ontwikkeld en getoetst.     Catalytic Depolymerization of Lignin and Woody Biomass in Supercritical Ethanol:Influence of Reaction Temperature and Feedstock

    The one-step ethanolysis approach to upgrade lignin to monomeric aromatics using a CuMgAl mixed oxide catalyst is studied in detail. The influence of reaction temperature (200-420 °C) on the product distribution is investigated. At low temperature (200-250 °C), recondensation is dominant, while char-forming reactions become significant at high reaction temperature (&gt;380 °C). At preferred intermediate temperatures (300-340 °C), char-forming reactions are effectively suppressed by alkylation and Guerbet and esterification reactions. This shifts the reaction toward depolymerization, explaining high monomeric aromatics yield. Carbon-14 dating analysis of the lignin residue revealed that a substantial amount of the carbon in the lignin residue originates from reactions of lignin with ethanol. Recycling tests show that the activity of the regenerated catalyst was strongly decreased due to a loss of basic sites due to hydrolysis of the MgO function and a loss of surface area due to spinel oxide formation of the Cu and Al components. The utility of this one-step approach for upgrading woody biomass was also demonstrated. An important observation is that conversion of the native lignin contained in the lignocellulosic matrix is much easier than the conversion of technical lignin.</p

    This commentary gives explanations and worked examples to the design rules in Eurocode 3 that are influenced by the strength and toughness properties of the structural steels used. It is a commentary and background document to EN 1993-1-10 "Material toughness and through thickness properties" and its extension in EN 1993-1-12 "Design rules for high-strength steels", where toughness properties are explicitly addressed. It however provides also background to other parts of EN 1993, e.g. to EN 1993-1-1 "Design of steel structures - Basic rules and rules for buildings", where the design rules are related only to strength properties as the yield strength and the tensile strength without explicitly mentioning the role of toughness that is hidden behind the resistance formulae. Sampling locations include (1) control sediments without hydrothermal or seep influence, (2) Sonora Margin sediments underlying oxygen minimum zone water, (3) compacted, highly reduced sediments from a pressure ridge with numerous seeps at the base of the Sonora Margin, and (4) sediments impacted by hydrothermal circulation at the off-axis Ringvent site. Generally, archaeal communities largely comprise Bathyarchaeal lineages, members of the Hadesarchaea, MBG-D, TMEG, and ANME-1 groups. Variations in archaeal community composition reflect locally specific environmental challenges. Background sediments are divided into surface and subsurface niches. Overall, the environmental setting and history of a particular site, not isolated biogeochemical properties out of context, control the subseafloor archaeal communities in Guaymas Basin and Sonora Margin sediments

Hierbij willen zij collectief op milieudoelstellingen worden afgerekend, in plaats van individueel te moeten voldoen aan generieke middelvoorschriften. Twee zaken zijn noodzakelijk voor deze vorm van zelfsturing. Ten eerste moeten er heldere doelen voor milieuprestaties en milieukwaliteit zijn waarop gestuurd kan worden.
