Cold-water coral reef frameworks, megafaunal communities and evidence for coral carbonate mounds on the Hatton Bank, north east Atlantic
Offshore banks and seamounts sustain diverse megafaunal communities, including framework reefs formed by cold-water corals. Few studies have quantified environmental effects on the alpha or beta diversity of these communities. We adopted an interdisciplinary approach that used historical geophysical data to identify topographic highs on Hatton Bank, which were surveyed visually. The resulting photographic data were used to examine relationships between megafaunal communities and macrohabitat, the latter defined into six categories (mud, sand, cobbles, coral rubble, coral framework, rock). The survey stations revealed considerable small-scale variability in macrohabitat from exposed Late Palaeocene lava flows to quiescent muddy habitats and coral-built carbonate mounds. The first reported evidence for coral carbonate mound development in UK waters is presented, which was most pronounced near present-day or former sites of topographic change, suggesting that local current acceleration favoured coral framework growth and mound initiation. Alpha diversity varied significantly across macrohabitats, but not between rock and coral rubble, or between smaller grain sized categories of cobbles, sand and mud. Community composition differed between most macrohabitats, and variation in beta diversity across Hatton Bank was largely explained by fine-scale substratum. Certain megafauna were clearly associated with particular macrohabitats, with stylasterid corals notably associated with cobble and rock habitats and coral habitats characterized by a diverse community of suspension-feeders. The visual surveys also produced novel images of deep-water megafauna including a new photographic record of the gorgonian coral Paragorgia arborea, a species not previously reported from Rockall Plateau. Further interdisciplinary studies are needed to interpret beta diversity across these and other environmental gradients on Hatton Bank. It is clear that efforts are also needed to improve our understanding of the genetic connectivity and biogeography of vulnerable deep-water ecosystems and to develop predictive models of their occurrence that can help inform future conservation measures
It’s What Happens on the Front Lines of Civic Education Policy that Matters: Reflections on a Natural Experiment on Youth Turnout in Ontario
In the last decade there has developed a new level of coordination among those working in the fields of citizenship education and political participation. The paper puts this link to an empirical test, using a natural experiment of youth turnout in the 2004 and 2006 federal election to investigate what, if any, effect can be found of Ontario’s introduction of a compulsory Grade 10 Civics course in 2000. We find that changing the curriculum in itself does not appear to have the desired results, concluding that, in practice, any lasting effect of civic education upon youth political participation rests on the effectiveness of front-line implementation
Relations between personality changes and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease pathology.
Specific changes in personality profiles may represent early non-cognitive symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Evaluating the subject's personality changes may add significant clinical information, as well as help to better understand the interaction between personality change, cognitive decline, and cerebral pathology. With this study we aimed to describe the relationship between personality changes and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers of AD pathology at early clinical stages of the disease. One hundred and ten subjects, of whom 66 cognitively impaired patients (57 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 9 with mild dementia) and 44 healthy controls, had neuropsychological examination as well as lumbar puncture to determine concentrations of CSF biomarkers of AD pathology (amyloid beta javax.xml.bind.JAXBElement@6dd80402 (Aβ javax.xml.bind.JAXBElement@750f1490 ), phosphorylated tau (ptau-181), and total-tau (tau)). The Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) was administered twice, once to evaluate subjects' current personality and once to assess personality traits retrospectively 5 years before evaluation. Subjects with an AD CSF biomarker profile showed significant increase in neuroticism and decrease in conscientiousness over time as compared to non-AD CSF biomarker group. In regression analysis controlling for global cognition as measured by the MMSE score, increasing neuroticism and decreasing extraversion, openness to experience and conscientiousness were associated with lower Aβ javax.xml.bind.JAXBElement@71367816 concentrations but not with tau and ptau-181 concentrations. Our findings suggest that early and specific changes in personality are associated with cerebral AD pathology. Concentrations of CSF biomarkers, additionally to severity of the cognitive impairment, significantly contribute in predicting specific personality changes
Corrections to the Central Limit Theorem for Heavy-Tailed Probability Densities
Classical Edgeworth expansions provide asymptotic correction terms to the
Central Limit Theorem (CLT) up to an order that depends on the number of
moments available. In this paper, we provide subsequent correction terms beyond
those given by a standard Edgeworth expansion in the general case of regularly
varying distributions with diverging moments (beyond the second). The
subsequent terms can be expressed in a simple closed form in terms of certain
special functions (Dawson's integral and parabolic cylinder functions), and
there are qualitative differences depending on whether the number of moments
available is even, odd or not an integer, and whether the distributions are
symmetric or not. If the increments have an even number of moments, then
additional logarithmic corrections must also be incorporated in the expansion
parameter. An interesting feature of our correction terms for the CLT is that
they become dominant outside the central region and blend naturally with known
large-deviation asymptotics when these are applied formally to the spatial
scales of the CLT
Interaction between personality traits and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease pathology modulates cognitive performance.
During adulthood, personality characteristics may contribute to the individual capacity to compensate the impact of developing cerebral Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology on cognitive impairment in later life. In this study we aimed to investigate whether and how premorbid personality traits interact with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) markers of AD pathology to predict cognitive performance in subjects with mild cognitive impairment or mild AD dementia and in participants with normal cognition.
One hundred and ten subjects, of whom 66 were patients with mild cognitive impairment or mild AD dementia and 44 were healthy controls, had a comprehensive medical and neuropsychological examination as well as lumbar puncture to measure CSF biomarkers of AD pathology (amyloid beta1-42, phosphorylated tau and total-tau). Participants' proxies completed the Revised NEO Personality Inventory, Form R to retrospectively assess subjects' premorbid personality.
In hierarchical multivariate regression analyses, including age, gender, education, APOEε4 status and cognitive level, premorbid neuroticism, conscientiousness and agreeableness modulated the effect of CSF biomarkers on cognitive performance. Low premorbid openness independently predicted lower levels of cognitive functioning after controlling for biomarker concentrations.
Our findings suggest that specific premorbid personality traits are associated with cerebral AD pathology and modulate its impact on cognitive performance. Considering personality characteristics may help to appraise a person's cognitive reserve and the risk of cognitive decline in later life
Evaluation de la stratégie d’élimination de la rougeole 2011-2015
La stratégie d’élimination de la rougeole 2011-2015 élaborée et mise en oeuvre par l’OFSP a été évaluée en utilisant diverses approches méthodologiques complémentaires. Les principaux résultats montrent qu’un large consensus sur la stratégie a été obtenu sous l’impulsion de l’OFSP et que tous les cantons ont mis en oeuvre des mesures visant à augmenter la couverture vaccinale. Une augmentation de la couverture vaccinale, du rattrapage vaccinal et une réduction des disparités cantonales de couverture vaccinale ont été observées. Cependant l’objectif stratégique de couverture vaccinale 2 doses à l’âge de 2 ans n’a pas été obtenu dans tous les cantons pour lesquels on dispose d’une mesure en 2014-2015. Il est probable que la stratégie n’a pas encore déployé tous ses effets. Les mesures mises en oeuvre pour prévenir et contenir les flambées épidémiques et qui visent à augmenter la couverture vaccinale devraient être poursuivies

Mass-luminosity relation for FGK main sequence stars: metallicity and age contributions
The stellar mass-luminosity relation (MLR) is one of the most famous
empirical "laws", discovered in the beginning of the 20th century. MLR is still
used to estimate stellar masses for nearby stars, particularly for those that
are not binary systems, hence the mass cannot be derived directly from the
observations. It's well known that the MLR has a statistical dispersion which
cannot be explained exclusively due to the observational errors in luminosity
(or mass). It is an intrinsic dispersion caused by the differences in age and
chemical composition from star to star. In this work we discuss the impact of
age and metallicity on the MLR. Using the recent data on mass, luminosity,
metallicity, and age for 26 FGK stars (all members of binary systems, with
observational mass-errors <= 3%), including the Sun, we derive the MLR taking
into account, separately, mass-luminosity, mass-luminosity-metallicity, and
mass-luminosity-metallicity-age. Our results show that the inclusion of age and
metallicity in the MLR, for FGK stars, improves the individual mass estimation

Multi-field Inflation with a Random Potential
Motivated by the possibility of inflation in the cosmic landscape, which may
be approximated by a complicated potential, we study the density perturbations
in multi-field inflation with a random potential. The random potential causes
the inflaton to undergo a Brownian motion with a drift in the D-dimensional
field space. To quantify such an effect, we employ a stochastic approach to
evaluate the two-point and three-point functions of primordial perturbations.
We find that in the weakly random scenario the resulting power spectrum
resembles that of the single field slow-roll case, with up to 2% more red tilt.
The strongly random scenario, leads to rich phenomenologies, such as primordial
fluctuations in the power spectrum on all angular scales. Such features may
already be hiding in the error bars of observed CMB TT (as well as TE and EE)
power spectrum and can be detected or falsified with more data coming in the
future. The tensor power spectrum itself is free of fluctuations and the tensor
to scalar ratio is enhanced. In addition a large negative running of the power
spectral index is possible. Non-Gaussianity is generically suppressed by the
growth of adiabatic perturbations on super-horizon scales, but can possibly be
enhanced by resonant effects or arise from the entropic perturbations during
the onset of (p)reheating. The formalism developed in this paper can be applied
to a wide class of multi-field inflation models including, e.g. the N-flation
