    Toward An Understanding of Developmental Coordination Disorder: Terminological and Diagnostic Issues

    Awareness of children who experience unexpected difficulty in the acquisition of motor skills has increased dramatically over the last twenty years. Although the positing of a distinct syndrome has proven seminal in provoking further questions, several basic terminological problems remain unresolved. In this paper, we conduct a component analysis of the three, principal competing labels for this disorder, two of them being elements derived from systematic diagnostic frameworks. Our preference for the DSM IV term Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is stated find justified. Problems in diagnosis are discussed, especially in relation to the etiology-dominated medical model. We argue that an attempt should be made to identify (pathological) positive signs that can reliably be detected rather than relying entirely on normative evidence of a lack of skills exhibited by other children of the same age. The high degree of overlap between DCD and other developmental disorders suggests that DCD might not constitute a distinct syndrome. In this context, we emphasize the need to determine whether incoordination takes a different form when it occurs alone or whether it is combined with general developmental delay or with other specific disorders in children of normal intelligence

    1. Fine-Tuning Photosensitizer Charge in Prevention of Back Electron Transfer in Water-Splitting. 2. Perturbation of Polypyridine Ruthenium(II) Excited States.

    It is shown that the charge of the photodonor in electron-transfer reactions is an additional variable that should be considered in strategies to inhibit energy-wasting back electron-transfer reactions. In particular, when microheterogeneous media are used in water-splitting schemes and the photodonor charge is adjusted to take advantage of the electrostatics of a micellar potential surface, the back electron transfer is reduced. It is known that a \u27chemical soup\u27 consisting of the photodonor tris(2,2\sp\prime-bipyridine)-ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)\sb3\sp{2+}), the electron relay methyl viologen (MV\sp{2+}), and a sacrificial donor like triethanolamine (TEOA) can generate dihydrogen from water in the presence of appropriate catalysts. Back electron transfer is inhibited by attaching a long chain to the viologen to make it lymphophilic and partitioning the relay into a micellar phase. Inhibition of back electron transfer in this system is improved by an order of magnitude by using the neutral photodonor bis(2,2\sp\prime-bipyridine)-4,4\sp\prime-dicarboxy-2,2\sp\prime-bipyridine-ruthenium (Ru(bpy)\sb2dcb). The photophysics of Ru(bpy)\sb2dcb and Ru(bpy)\sb2dcbH\sb2\sp{2+} are compared to that of Ru(bpy)\sb3\sp{2+}. It is shown that the triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer state (\sp3MLCT) is stabilized for these complexes and thus the activation energy, Δ\DeltaE, for the thermal population of the ligand field state (LF) is increased. Population of the LF state can result in the photodegradation of photocatalysts. The 4,5-diazafluorene ligand was used to investigate the nature of photosubstitution for polypyridine ruthenium complexes. Diazafluorene is shown to lower LF state(s) without perturbing MLCT states. The photophysics for the series, Ru(bpy)\sb{\rm 3-n}diaz\sb{\rm n}\sp{2+} (n = 0,1,2,3), is examined. Each substitution of a diazafluorene for bipyridine is shown to progressively lower the LF state. Surprisingly, the photoanation of Ru(bpy)\sb2diaz\sp{2+} in acetonitrile has little temperature dependence in contrast to that of Ru(bpy)\sb3\sp{2+}. The photoanation of the Ru(bpy)\sb{\rm 3-n}diaz\sb{\rm n}\sp{2+} (n = 0,1,2,3) series in dichloromethane is studied. This study directly confirms Meyer\u27s chelate model of photosubstitution for polypyridine complexes. An intermediate that has a monodentate diazafluorene, ((diaz)\sb2Ru(Cl)diaz) \sp+, is identified spectrally, and its thermal ring closure regenerating Ru(diaz)\sb3\sp{2+} is observed and has an activation energy of 15.7 kcal mol\sp{-1}

    Religiosity and music copyright theft among Canadian Baptist youth

    Get PDF
    This study examines the views of 706 Canadian Baptist youth (between the ages of 14 and 18 years) on the moral issue of music copyright theft, and explores the influence on these views of age, sex, Sunday church attendance, personal prayer, personal Bible reading, and conservative Bible believing. The participants were attending Springforth 2005 (a major Canadian Baptist Youth Conference). The data demonstrate a high level of acceptance of music copyright theft, with only 26% of the participants agreeing that downloading copyright music from the Internet without paying is always wrong. Employing multiple regression modelling, the data demonstrated that, as Canadian Baptist youth mature (grew older), as they became more familiar with Bible teaching (through frequent reading of the scriptures), and as they became more integrated within the community of faith (through frequent Sunday church attendance), so they take a tougher line against music copyright theft
