The Global Threat to Manta and Mobula Rays

    Get PDF
Manta and mobula rays span the tropics of the world and are among the most captivating and charismatic of marine species. However, their survival is severely threatened by growing fisheries pressure driven by demand for the gill rakers that the animals use to filter feed. This report is the first global assessment of what is currently known about manta and mobula biology, the threats they face, the fisheries and trade that target them, non-consumptive and sustainable uses for communities to profit from them, current conservation measures and urgent steps recommended to prevent regional extinctions.

Enhanced quantum tunnelling induced by disorder

We reconsider the problem of the enhancement of tunnelling of a quantum particle induced by disorder of a one-dimensional tunnel barrier of length LL, using two different approximate analytic solutions of the invariant imbedding equations of wave propagation for weak disorder. The two solutions are complementary for the detailed understanding of important aspects of numerical results on disorder-enhanced tunnelling obtained recently by Kim et al. (Phys. rev. B{\bf 77}, 024203 (2008)). In particular, we derive analytically the scaled wavenumber (kL)(kL)-threshold where disorder-enhanced tunnelling of an incident electron first occurs, as well as the rate of variation of the transmittance in the limit of vanishing disorder. Both quantities are in good agreement with the numerical results of Kim et al. Our non-perturbative solution of the invariant imbedding equations allows us to show that the disorder enhances both the mean conductance and the mean resistance of the barrier.Comment: 10 page

Quantum-Monte-Carlo Calculations for Bosons in a Two-Dimensional Harmonic Trap

    Get PDF
Path-Integral-Monte-Carlo simulation has been used to calculate the properties of a two-dimensional (2D) interacting Bose system. The bosons interact with hard-core potentials and are confined to a harmonic trap. Results for the density profiles, the condensate fraction, and the superfluid density are presented. By comparing with the ideal gas we easily observe the effects of finite size and the depletion of the condensate because of interactions. The system is known to have no phase transition to a Bose-Einstein condensation in 2D, but the finite system shows that a significant fraction of the particles are in the lowest state at low temperatures.Comment: six pages, two figures; Contribution to QFS98; To be published in Journ. Response of Lowland Rice Plants to Simulated Insect Defoliation in West Africa

    Get PDF
Field experiments were conducted to investigate the impact of simulated insect-caused defoliation on irrigated rice. Defoliation levels tested were 0% (control), 25% defoliation at 21 days after transplanting (dat), 25% defoliation at 41 dat, 25% defoliation at 21 and 42 dat, 50% defoliation at 21 dat, 50% defoliation at 42 dat, 75% defoliation at 21 dat, 75% defoliation at 42 dat, 75% defoliation at 21 and 42 dat, 100% defoliation at 21 dat, and 100% defoliation at 21 and 42 dat. Tiller height, total number of tillers, percent panicle-bearing tillers, weight of 100 grains, and grain yields were recorded. The rice plant when defoliated just before tillering or in the tillering stage has the ability to compensate for defoliation damage. No yield losses occurred at 25% defoliation. Defoliation of 100% had a significant effect on the total number of tillers and on grain yield. Yield losses at 100% defoliation over the 3 years of the study averaged 40% in the 21 dat treatment and 55% in the 21 and 42 dat treatment. The implications of the development of cultural practices to manage lowland rice defoliating insects are discussed

A computational trick for calculating the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition and its standard error

    Get PDF
To compute the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition and associated standard errors a practitioner needs to be comfortable using vector and matrix software manipulations. This paper proposes a computational trick for producing these computations by running an artificial regression.
