Biomarkers Beyond the Natriuretic Peptides for Chronic Heart Failure: Galectin-3 and Soluble ST2.

    Get PDF
B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and NT-proBNP are widely used plasma biomarkers for the diagnosis of acute decompensated heart failure and prognosis for future cardiac disease. The clinical performance of these tests for management of chronic heart failure is somewhat limited by the markers' high biological variation. Biomarkers such as galectin-3 and soluble ST2 that reflect ongoing remodeling via cardiac fibrosis of the heart may provide complementary information to the natriuretic peptides in the management of chronic heart failure with regards to risk stratification for future adverse cardiac events (death, myocardial infarction, and need for heart transplantation). However, implementation of these biomarkers into routine clinical practice requires documentation that these tests will enable therapeutic decisions that can be made to improve clinical outcomes, and the availability of commercial assays. This report will discuss the need for novel heart failure biomarkers, ideal characteristics of assays, and review and compare the clinical performance of assays for galectin-3 and sST2 for chronic heart failure disease management

The meaning is clear: The Student is submitting to the will of the higher authority, for the sake of making more money. Will that behavior also just as easily transfer to the political will of higher authority, to induce the Students to unthinkingly repeat the painful atrocities of the past, because they were not taught them?Higher education, online education, power, history, didactics.

State Medicaid health maintenance organization policies and special-needs children.

    Get PDF
Little research has been done to ascertain what enrollment in a health maintenance organization (HMO) may mean for the care of Medicaid recipients who regularly require specialty health services. This article presents the results of a survey of all State Medicaid agencies regarding their policies for enrolling and serving special-needs children in HMOs. The survey revealed that many States have implemented one or more strategies to protect special-needs Medicaid recipients enrolled in HMOs. The survey results suggest, however, that such strategies are too limited in scope to ensure appropriate access to specialty services for all children with special health needs

Flow behaviour of dielectric liquids in an electric field

A family of 10 silicone oils with electrical conductivity similar to 10(-13) S m(-1) (a regime hitherto systematically unexplored) and viscosities ranging from 1 to 2000mPas have been Subjected to an electrical field of up to 1.5kV mm(-1) during flow from a needle. The flow behaviour of these liquids is investigated experimentally in the flow rate regime 10(-8)-10(-12) m(3) s(-1) and we analyse the results using the Ohnesorge number. Due to the low electrical conductivity and high electrical relaxation time of the silicone oils, only unsteady transient jets were found. The onset of this type of jetting has been defined using current measurements and, in contrast to conducting liquids, the non-dimensional jet diameter increases with increase in Ohnesorge number. The time elapsed between the start and finish of jetting increases with increasing Ohnesorge number

Design, Synthesis and biological evaluation of novel acridine-polyamine conjugates against prostate cancer

    Get PDF
Prostate cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in men, aged 85 and over. Androgen receptor, a single polypeptide with three functional domains is very important during initiation and progression of the disease. In this study, a DNA intercalating agent, acridine is linked to the testosterone via a polyamine linker to obtain a compound with trifunctional characteristics, where the acridine intercalates the DNA, the polyamine linker binds the phosphoryl groups of the DNA backbone and the testosterone moiety binds into the AR ligand binding domain, with which its DNA binding domain is bound already to the DNA. This trifunctional compound and related derivatives have been synthesized and tested against androgen dependent- and androgen independent- prostate cancer cell lines and they have demonstrated to be cytotoxic at the micromolar concentrations

Dark matter cores and cusps in spiral galaxies and their explanations

We compare proposed solutions to the core vs cusp issue of spiral galaxies, which has also been framed as a diversity problem, and demonstrate that the cuspiness of dark matter halos is correlated with the stellar surface brightness. We compare the rotation curve fits to the SPARC sample from a self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) model, which self-consistently includes the impact of baryons on the halo profile, and hydrodynamical N-body simulations with cold dark matter (CDM). The SIDM model predicts a strong correlation between the core size and the stellar surface density, and it provides the best global fit to the data. The CDM simulations without strong baryonic feedback effects fail to explain the large dark matter cores seen in low surface brightness galaxies. On the other hand, with strong feedback, CDM simulations do not produce galaxy analogs with high stellar and dark matter densities, and therefore they have trouble in explaining the rotation curves of high surface brightness galaxies. This implies that current feedback implementations need to be modified. We also explicitly show how the concentration-mass and stellar-to-halo mass relations together lead to a radial acceleration relation (RAR) in an averaged sense, and reiterate the point that the RAR does not capture the diversity of galaxy rotation curves in the inner regions. These results make a strong case for SIDM as the explanation for the cores and cusps of field galaxies

The Bulk Channel in Thermal Gauge Theories

    Get PDF
We investigate the thermal correlator of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor in the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. Our goal is to constrain the spectral function in that channel, whose low-frequency part determines the bulk viscosity. We focus on the thermal modification of the spectral function, ρ(ω,T)ρ(ω,0)\rho(\omega,T)-\rho(\omega,0). Using the operator-product expansion we give the high-frequency behavior of this difference in terms of thermodynamic potentials. We take into account the presence of an exact delta function located at the origin, which had been missed in previous analyses. We then combine the bulk sum rule and a Monte-Carlo evaluation of the Euclidean correlator to determine the intervals of frequency where the spectral density is enhanced or depleted by thermal effects. We find evidence that the thermal spectral density is non-zero for frequencies below the scalar glueball mass mm and is significantly depleted for mω3mm\lesssim\omega\lesssim 3m.Comment: (1+25) pages, 6 figure

Performance measurement of enablers of computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) in Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the industrialization process of many developed countries and play a crucial role in increasing a country's economy. To be able to survive and grow, SMEs must adopt strategic technologies and innovative management to survive. During the last two decades, several factors have forced global manufacturers to make dramatic changes in their products, markets, as well as business and manufacturing strategies. One of the way by which SMEs can achieve a competitive advantage in manufacturing is through the implementation of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM). An attempt has been made in this paper to study the performance measurement of enablers of CIM in SMEs through the empirical study conducted in the province of SIndh in Pakistan
