    Regulation of Oxidative Stress and Cardioprotection in Diabetes Mellitus

    Analysis of the Framingham data has shown that the risk of heart failure is increased substantially among diabetic patients, while persons with the metabolic syndrome have an increased risk of both atherosclerosis and diabetes mellitus. Sleep apnea may be related to the metabolic syndrome and systemic inflammation through hypoxia, which might also cause the cardiac remodeling by increased oxidative stress. On the other hand, the renin-angiotensin system is activated in diabetes, and local angiotensin II production may lead to oxidative damage via the angiotensin II type 1 receptor. Basic and clinical data indicate that angiotensin II receptor blockers have the potential to preserve left ventricular function and prevent cardiac remodeling that is exaggerated by oxidative stress in patients with diabetes. Thus, alleviation of oxidative stress might be one possible strategy in the treatment of diabetic patients associated with sleep apnea

    Effect of Ambient Pressure on Equilibrium Moisture Content of Wood

    The equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of Russian larch wood, Sugi wood, and Hinoki wood was measured under vacuum conditions at temperatures of 45, 50, and 60°C and ambient pressures of 13.3, 53.3, and 101.3 kPa. The results show that the EMC of each species increased with a decrease in ambient pressure. The effect of temperature and RH on EMC under vacuum conditions showed a similar tendency. Wet-bulb temperature needed to be controlled to measure EMC, even under vacuum, because pressure was not maintained only by water vapor pressure because of the presence of air in the vessel. There were obvious differences between the EMC values obtained in this experiment and previous experimental EMC values in which the wet-bulb temperature was not controlled

    Hepatitis C Treatment in Elderly Patients

    The patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) are getting older and the demands for treatment to those patients are increasing due to the high risk of development of hepatocellular carcinoma. Elderly patients were previously defined as 60 years and over, however definition of the elderly patients shifted to be older year to year. Interferon (IFN) and ribavirin combination therapy was significantly improved efficacy of treatment, however ribavirin induces anemia, resulted in lower efficacy due to reduction of ribavirin for the elderly patients. And efficacy of over 60 years old was comparable to the patients under 60 years. In the CHC patients with genotype 1, the efficacy of elderly patient was significantly lower than that of younger patients, especially in female. Direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) therapy makes treatment efficacy improved to over 90% and side effect of treatment was dramatically reduced compared to IFN-based therapy. The efficacy of dual oral therapy by using asunaprevir (ASV) and daclatasvir (DCA) for elderly patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1b has not been fully clarified. In this article we would like to show the efficacy of elderly patients with CHC, especially patients infected with genotype 1b, from the era of IFN monotherapy to the era of new DAAs

    The posterior parietal cortex contributes to visuomotor processing for saccades in blindsight macaques

    Patients with damage to the primary visual cortex (V1) lose visual awareness, yet retain the ability to perform visuomotor tasks, which is called "blindsight." To understand the neural mechanisms underlying this residual visuomotor function, we studied a non-human primate model of blindsight with a unilateral lesion of V1 using various oculomotor tasks. Functional brain imaging by positron emission tomography showed a significant change after V1 lesion in saccade-related visuomotor activity in the intraparietal sulcus area in the ipsi- and contralesional posterior parietal cortex. Single unit recordings in the lateral bank of the intraparietal sulcus (lbIPS) showed visual responses to targets in the contralateral visual field on both hemispheres. Injection of muscimol into the ipsi- or contralesional lbIPSs significantly impaired saccades to targets in the V1 lesion-affected visual field, differently from previous reports in intact animals. These results indicate that the bilateral lbIPSs contribute to visuomotor function in blindsight
