Performance of a Steel Sheet-Pile Barrier against Ground Vibration Originating in Railway Traffics
In order to develop an effective and practical isolation method against ground vibrations caused by running trains, the authors tried to apply sheet pile walls beside of real railway tracks. Field tests were carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of this countermeasure for reducing the ground vibrations. An estimation method for vibration reduction by sheet pile walls is presented, being based on FEM simulation analysi
Peripheral T-cell lymphoma of the eyelid
Makoto Ishikawa, Hiroshi Watabe, Masahiro Hayakawa, Takeshi YoshitomiDepartment of Ophthalmology, Akita University Faculty of Medicine, Akita, JapanPurpose: To report a case of a 25-year-old woman with previously treated peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) presenting with a recurrent lower eyelid lesion.Patients and method: Case report. Results: A 25-year-old young woman with previously treated PTCL noted an induration in the skin of her left lower eyelid. Upon diagnosis of a chalazion, antibiotic eye drops and ointments as well as steroid eye drops were administered. However, the condition worsened rapidly and swelling of the lower eyelid became remarkable. An excisional biopsy revealed that the palpebral lesion was diagnosed as recurrence of PTCL. Electron irradiation was applied as a radical treatment, and the prognosis was satisfactory without recurrence at 10 months after the last irradiation. Conclusions: Although lymphoma isolated to the ocular adnexa is rare, it should always be included in the differential diagnosis of any patient presenting with progressive swelling of the eyelid or ocular region. Keywords: peripheral T-cell lymphoma, chalazion, eyeli
Recent Progress in Electrical Insulation Techniques for HTS Power Apparatus
AbstractThis paper describes the electrical insulation techniques at cryogenic temperatures, i.e. Cryodielectrics, for HTS power apparatus, e.g. HTS power transmission cables, transformers, fault current limiters and SMES. Breakdown and partial discharge characteristics are discussed for different electrical insulation configurations of LN2, sub-cooled LN2, solid, vacuum and their composite insulation systems. Dynamic and static insulation performances with and without taking account of quench in HTS materials are also introduced
Instabilities and turbulence-like dynamics in an oppositely driven binary particle mixture
Using extensive particle-based simulations, we investigate out-of-equilibrium
pattern dynamics in an oppositely driven binary particle system in two
dimensions. A surprisingly rich dynamical behavior including lane formation,
jamming, oscillation and turbulence-like dynamics is found. The ratio of two
friction coefficients is a key parameter governing the stability of lane
formation. When the friction coefficient transverse to the external force
direction is sufficiently small compared to the longitudinal one, the lane
structure becomes unstable to shear-induced disturbances, and the system
eventually exhibits a dynamical transition into a novel turbulence-like phase
characterized by random convective flows. We numerically construct an
out-of-equilibrium phase diagram. Statistical analysis of complex
spatio-temporal dynamics of the fully nonlinear turbulence-like phase suggests
its apparent reminiscence to the swarming dynamics in certain active matter
systems.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in EP
Enhancement Antimicrobial Activity of Hyphothiocyanite using Carrot Against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli
Hypothiocyanite has been known as antimicrobial agent that was generated from
lactoperoxidase system (LPOS) but its antimicrobial activity was low against pathogenic bacteria in
milk. This research has been done to enhance the antimicrobial activity of hypothiocyanite against
pathogenic bacteria commonly found in milk: Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli by
addition of carrot extract. The result showed that carrot extract was able to enhance the antimicrobial
activity of hypothiocyanite strongly against E. coli, however less enhancement has been found in the
antibacterial activity of hypothiocyanite against S. aureus
