    Synthesis of ninhydrin and ninhydrin analogs: Synthetic efforts toward the total synthesis of a (3,4)-didehydroproline analog of astin G

    Ninhydrin is an essential tool in the analysis of amino acids, peptides, and proteins, and the preferred reagent for the detection of latent fingerprints on porous surfaces. An investigation of the oxidation of suitable precursors to form the vicinal tricarbonyl has provided general methods for the synthesis of ninhydrin and ninhydrin analogs. Novel heterocyclic and substituted ninhydrin analogs have been prepared and evaluated for use as reagents for the detection of latent fingerprints. Two members of an alternative class of compounds, 1,2-indandione analogs, were prepared for use as potential reagents. The astins are a class of compounds isolated from the root of the flowering plant Aster tataricus. Three members of this family containing the unusual amino acid cis-dichloro-L-proline have exhibited antitumor activity. Stereoselective syntheses of the non-proteinogenic amino acids contained in the macrocycles were developed. A (3,4)-didehydroproline benzyl ether analog of astin G was prepared as a precursor to radiolabelled astin G. The introduction of the (3,4)-double bond of proline after macrolactamization was investigated to prepare a (3,4)-didehydroproline analog of astin G

    Open Educational eXtended Reality (OEXR): Why Now?

    With few exceptions, the diverse Open Educational Resource (OER) landscape has not included eXtended Reality (XR) which includes augmented, mixed, and virtual reality modalities. However, recent technological advances, coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic have fast tracked XR adoption. This session offers foundational recommendations for embracing OER and XR together within the higher education community in the spirit of democratizing the technology and ensuring equitable access. This session will provide Open Educational eXtended Reality (OEXR) examples and takeaways from San Diego State University (SDSU) including faculty partnerships, content creation and evaluation, and use of Creative Commons (CC) licensing to retain copyright while allowing different types of educational use without charge. These resources include an open platform to make OEXR virtual anatomy resources available to the 400,000+ students enrolled within the California State University system—and beyond! This platform will bring existing anatomy and physiology content together, and provide a library for multi-disciplinary content, including indigenous artifacts from the Kumeyaay Indigenous people and botany specimens endemic to San Diego
