Globalisation and the Inward Flow of Immigrants: Issues Associated with the Inpatriation of Global Managers
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Assembling a diverse global workforce is becoming a critical dimension in gaining successful global performance. In the past, staffing has focused on control of the multinational organization as the primary goal when staffing overseas positions. As organizations globalize their operations, the goal of staffing is shifting from control to diversity, which in turn will provide the global organization with a means to gain/maintain competitive advantage. This diversity will be accomplished by integrating foreigners into the home country organization (i.e., inpatriation) through a permanent assignment. This article examines the inward flow of inpatriate managers by using social learning theory as a lens to better understand the means to integrate foreign managers into the domestic organization culture. The stages that inpatriate managers will go through (i.e., survival, integration, acculturation, and pluralistic integration) are explored to ascertain how to effectively utilize these global managers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
The Self-Dual String and Anomalies in the M5-brane
We study the anomalies of a charge self-dual string solution in the
Coulomb branch of M5-branes. Cancellation of these anomalies allows us to
determine the anomaly of the zero-modes on the self-dual string and their
scaling with and . The dimensional reduction of the five-brane
anomalous couplings then lead to certain anomalous couplings for D-branes.Comment: 13 pages, Harvmac, refs adde
Far-infrared observations of young clusters embedded in the R Coronae Austrinae and RHO Ophiuchi dark clouds
Multicolor far infrared maps in two nearby dark clouds, R Coronae Austrinae and rho Ophiuchi, were made in order to investigate the individual contribution of low mass stars to the energetics and dynamics of the surrounding gas and dust. Emission from cool dust associated with five low mass stars in Cr A and four in rho Oph was detected; their far infrared luminosities range from 2 far infrared luminosities L. up to 40 far infrared luminosities. When an estimate of the bolometric luminosity was possible, it was found that typically more than 50% of the star's energy was radiated longward of 20 micrometers. meaningful limits to the far infrared luminosities of an additional eleven association members in Cr A and two in rho Oph were also obtained. The dust optical depth surrounding the star R Cr A appears to be asymmetric and may control the dynamics of the surrounding molecular gas. The implications of the results for the cloud energetics and star formation efficiency in these two clouds are discussed
On a three-body confinement force in hadron spectroscopy
Recently it has been argued that a three-body colour confinement interaction
can affect the stability condition of a three-quark system and the spectrum of
a tetraquark described by any constituent quark model. Here we discuss the role
of a three-body colour confinement interaction in a simple quark model and
present some of its implications for the spectra of baryons, tetraquarks and
six-quark systems.Comment: 19 pages (RevTeX), addition of new material regarding the NN
interaction, more accurate discussion of the baryonic case, accepted for
publication in Phys. Rev.
The Evolving Role of Supply Chain Managers in global Channels of Distribution and Logistics Systems
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Purpose – Supply chains have become a strategic strength to many firms due to the nature of the
globalization of business. The past roles of supply chain managers have changed dramatically and
now also include various new duties that will enhance firm competitiveness due to their boundary
spanning nature and the new focus of learning organizations. The paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach – This was a theoretically developed paper exploring trust,
learning organizations, and supply chains.
Findings – Researchers are now focussing on the relationship among the supply chain network through
the paradigm of relational marketing as the governance structures of contractual arrangements globally
cannot be anticipated.
Originality/value – The research through the lens of relational marketing explores how supply
chain managers’ core duties are now compounded by global/cultural nuances in respect to implicit
knowledge acquisition and relationship development through strong-form trust
A Spitzer Search For Planetary-Mass Brown Dwarfs With Circumstellar Disks: Candidate Selection
We report on initial results from a Spitzer program to search for very
low-mass brown dwarfs in Ophiuchus. This program is an extension of an earlier
study by Allers et al. which had resulted in an extraordinary success rate, 18
confirmed out of 19 candidates. Their program combined near-infrared and
Spitzer photom- etry to identify objects with very cool photospheres together
with circumstellar disk emission to indicate youth. Our new program has
obtained deep IRAC pho- tometry of a 0.5 deg2 field that was part of the
original Allers et al. study. We report 18 new candidates whose luminosities
extend down to 10-4 L\cdot which sug- gests masses down to ~ 2 MJ if confirmed.
We describe our selection techniques, likely contamination issues, and
follow-on photometry and spectroscopy that are in progress
Corporate social responsibility: Why bother?
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is not a new concept, but unfortunately has been defined in so many ways, it is often misinterpreted. In fact it has had 40 years to evolve from a somewhat infant concept to a successful managerial tool to build a company's reputation in the global market arena. Corporate social responsibility has become corporate strategic responsibility - an imperative element of corporate global business strategies. Many leaders, entrepreneurs, investors, executives and politicians now recognize CSR's potential for differentiation and positioning in the global marketplace. In the 21st century, we find CSR to have a remarkable acceptance among practicing managers; publicly traded corporations especially label CSR an essential tool for their long-term legitimacy and profitability. CSR has matured from its infancy, becoming a corporate reputational adding value strategy for firms
MAGMO: Coherent magnetic fields in the star forming regions of the Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm tangent
We present the pilot results of the `MAGMO' project, targeted observations of
ground-state hydroxyl masers towards sites of 6.7-GHz methanol maser emission
in the Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm tangent, Galactic longitudes 280 degrees
to 295 degrees. The `MAGMO' project aims to determine if Galactic magnetic
fields can be traced with Zeeman splitting of masers associated with star
formation. Pilot observations of 23 sites of methanol maser emission were made,
with the detection of ground-state hydroxyl masers towards 11 of these and six
additional offset sites. Of these 17 sites, nine are new detections of sites of
1665-MHz maser emission, three of them accompanied by 1667-MHz emission. More
than 70% of the maser features have significant circular polarization, whilst
only ~10% have significant linear polarization (although some features with up
to 100% linear polarization are found). We find 11 Zeeman pairs across six
sites of high-mass star formation with implied magnetic field strengths between
-1.5 mG and +3.8 mG and a median field strength of +1.6 mG. Our measurements of
Zeeman splitting imply that a coherent field orientation is experienced by the
maser sites across a distance of 5.3+/-2.0 kpc within the Carina-Sagittarius
spiral arm tangent.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Mathieu twining characters for K3
The analogue of the McKay-Thompson series for the proposed Mathieu group
action on the elliptic genus of K3 is analysed. The corresponding NS-sector
twining characters have good modular properties and satisfy remarkable
replication identities. These observations provide strong support for the
conjecture that the elliptic genus of K3 carries indeed an action of the
Mathieu group M24.Comment: 19 page
Cinderella Strings
We investigate recent claims concerning a new class of cosmic string
solutions in the Weinberg-Salam model. They have the general form of previously
discussed semi-local and electroweak strings, but are modified by the presence
of a non-zero W-condensate in the core of the string. We explicitly construct
such solutions for arbitrary values of the winding number . We then prove
that they are gauge equivalent to bare electroweak strings with winding number
. We also develop new asymptotic expressions for large- strings.Comment: 11 pages, harvmac (b) and epsf (2 figures uuencoded
