    Exploring the Gender Divide: Perceptions of IT Professionals in New Zealand

    The continuing shortage of IT professionals is a global problem and is exacerbated by the lack of women, representing nearly half the potential workforce, who are attracted to the industry. This paper contributes to the growing body of literature by examining the perspectives and experiences of both male and female IT professionals in New Zealand. Using a narrative inquiry methodology the study examines the perceptions of men and women regarding the inability of the IT industry to attract more female graduates. Data analysis is carried out through the lens of Individual Differences Theory to identify key factors influencing the make-up of the IT sector in New Zealand. The study finds that while there is a positive view of women‟s role in IT, there remains a powerful influence from stereotyping of the sector and those who work in it

    Developmental appropriateness of kindergarten programs and academic outcomes in first grade

    This study explored the relationship between the developmental appropriateness of kindergarten classroom instruction and first-grade report card grade overall averages and averages in reading, language, spelling, math, science, and social studies. The interactive roles that gender, SES, and kindergarten classroom type play in children’s later achievement were also examined. The sample consisted of166first-grade children who hadattended kindergarten classrooms with teaching practices identified as predominately developmentally appropriate or developmentally inappropriate. Findings indicated that firstgraders from more appropriate kindergarten classrooms had higher reading averages than children from less appropriate kindergarten classrooms. Females had higher overall and subject area averages than males. Significant interaction effects indicated that high SES children from less appropriate kindergarten classrooms hadhigheroverall averages and higher averages in all subjects except reading, when compared with low SES children from less appropriate classrooms. Low SES children from more appropriate kindergarten classrooms had higher overall averages and higher averages in all subjects except reading when comparedwith low SES children from less appropriate kindergarten classrooms. No significant differences were found between high and low SES children from more appropriate kindergarten classrooms. © 1993 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

    Galaxy Zoo: constraining the origin of spiral arms

    Since the discovery that the majority of low-redshift galaxies exhibit some level of spiral structure, a number of theories have been proposed as to why these patterns exist. A popular explanation is a process known as swing amplification, yet there is no observational evidence to prove that such a mechanism is at play. By using a number of measured properties of galaxies, and scaling relations where there are no direct measurements, we model samples of SDSS and S4G spiral galaxies in terms of their relative halo, bulge and disc mass and size. Using these models, we test predictions of swing amplification theory with respect to directly measured spiral arm numbers from Galaxy Zoo 2. We find that neither a universal cored or cuspy inner dark matter profile can correctly predict observed numbers of arms in galaxies. However, by invoking a halo contraction/expansion model, a clear bimodality in the spiral galaxy population emerges. Approximately 40 per cent of unbarred spiral galaxies at z 10^10 Msolar have spiral arms that can be modelled by swing amplification. This population display a significant correlation between predicted and observed spiral arm numbers, evidence that they are swing amplified modes. The remainder are dominated by two-arm systems for which the model predicts significantly higher arm numbers. These are likely driven by tidal interactions or other mechanisms

    Exposure to Traffic Pollution and Increased Risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis

    Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease that affects approximately 1% of the adult population, and to date, genetic factors explain < 50% of the risk. Particulate air pollution, especially of traffic origin, has been linked to systemic inflammation in many studies. Objectives: We examined the association of distance to road, a marker of traffic pollution exposure, and incidence of RA in a prospective cohort study.Methods We studied 90,297 U.S. women in the Nurses’ Health Study. We used a geographic information system to determine distance to road at the residence in 2000 as a measure of traffic exposure. Using Cox proportional hazard models, we examined the association of distance to road and incident RA (1976–2004) with adjustment for a large number of potential confounders. Results: In models adjusted for age, calendar year, race, cigarette smoking, parity, lactation, menopausal status and hormone use, oral contraceptive use, body mass index, physical activity, and census-tract-level median income and house value, we observed an elevated risk of RA [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.31; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.98–1.74] in women living within 50 m of a road, compared with those women living 200 m or farther away. We also observed this association in analyses among nonsmokers (HR = 1.62; 95% CI, 1.04–2.52), nonsmokers with rheumatoid factor (RF)-negative RA (HR = 1.77; 95% CI, 0.93–3.38), and nonsmokers with RF-positive RA (HR = 1.51; 95% CI, 0.82–2.77). We saw no elevations in risk in women living 50–200 m from the road. Conclusions: The observed association between exposure to traffic pollution and RA suggests that pollution from traffic in adulthood may be a newly identified environmental risk factor for RA
