Review of \u3cem\u3eThe Loyal West: Civil War and Reunion in Middle America\u3c/em\u3e by Matthew E. Stanley
Interest in Civil War memory and post–Civil War sectional reconciliation has expanded greatly in recent years, as two 2016 historiographical essays attest.1 Matthew E. Stanley\u27s new book, The Loyal West: Civil War and Reunion in Middle America is thus well timed to make an important contribution to our evolving understanding of the process of sectional reconciliation in the decades following the Civil War. With his focus on Kentucky\u27s northern neighbors in the lower portions of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, the editorial staff of the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society believe Stanley\u27s book will help historians better understand the role Kentucky played in the events of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, which saw a white supremacist version of Civil War memory eclipse an emancipationist version nationally.
We have asked four nineteenth-century historians to consider Stanley\u27s book from varying perspectives. M. Keith Harris teaches history at a private high school in Los Angeles, California. He is the author of Across the Bloody Chasm: The Culture of Commemoration among Civil War Veterans (2014) and is currently writing a book on D. W. Griffith\u27s controversial 1915 silent film, The Birth of a Nation. Anne E. Marshall is an associate professor of history at Mississippi State University and the author of Creating a Confederate Kentucky: The Lost Cause and Civil War Memory in a Border State (2012). James Marten is professor and chair of the history department at Marquette University. His most recent books are Sing Not War: The Lives of Union and Confederate Veterans in Gilded Age America (2011) and America\u27s Corporal: James Tanner in War and Peace (2014). Kristopher Maulden is a visiting assistant professor of history at Columbia College in Missouri. He is completing a book manuscript on the influence of Federalist politics and federal policy in the Ohio River Valley, and he is engaged in a study of nineteenth-century Ohio newspaper editor Charles Hammond. Finally, the author of The Loyal West, Matthew E. Stanley, assistant professor of history at Albany State University, will respond to the reviews

Preparation and Properties of In-Situ Devices Using the SALD and SALDVI Techniques
One of the many advantages of Selective Area Laser Deposition (SALD) and Selective
Area Laser Deposition Vapor Infiltration (SALDVI) is that they can be used to embed in-situ
micro-sensors within macro-components. A single-point SiC/C thermocouple sensor embedded
within a SiC macro-component and electrically insulated with silicon nitride layers has been
demonstrated. In many applications, multi-point sensors within a single component are needed,
e.g., in monitoring the temperature gradient and distribution at different positions. In this paper,
multi-point thermocouple devices are demonstrated. The macro-component is a SiC bulk shape
made by infiltrating vapor deposited silicon carbide into a silicon carbide powder bed using the
SALDVI technique. Multiple SiC/C thermocouples are embedded in-situ in the SiC bulk shape
using the SALD technique. The transient and steady state responses ofthe embedded
thermocouples are compared to reference thermocouples probing the surfaces of the bulk shape.Mechanical Engineerin

Preparing Students to be Effective Information Technology Project Managers: Can More Focus on Dialogue and Communication Processes Help?
The overall importance of dialogue and communication processes to scientific and technical problem solving is already well established in communication and project management literature (e.g., Bohm, 1999; Isaacs, 1999; Schwalbe, 1999; Kerzner, 1998). However, very little of this literature has been specifically applied to the fast-growing field of Information Technology/Information Systems (IT/IS) project management and to the pedagogical issues surrounding the teaching of students how to be more effective in working together as a team to solve IT/IS systems development problems. Many of the articles and books that address the subject have focused on some of the more obvious needs for better listening skills, more effective written and oral communication skills, techniques for helping to get your point across, etc. These are important but there is also a need for a more in depth look at the problem by applying some of the more ideological concepts related to “dialogue” introduced by Bohm and Isaacs
Registration of N614, A3N615, N616, and N617 Shattercane Genetic Stocks with Cytoplasmic or Nuclear Male Sterility and Juicy or Dry Midribs
Four shattercane [Sorghum bicolor subsp. drummondii (Nees ex Steud.) de Wet ex Davidse] genetic stocks—N614 (Reg. No. GS-652, PI 665684), A3N615 (Reg. No. GS-651, PI 665683), N616 (Reg. No. GS-653, PI 665685), and N617 (Reg. No. GS-654, PI 665686)—with A3 cytoplasmic male sterility or the nuclear male sterility gene ms3 containing either juicy (dd) or dry (DD) culms were developed jointly by the USDA-ARS; the Iowa Agricultural and Home Economics Experiment Station, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Iowa State University; and the Agricultural Research Division, Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Nebraska. The stocks were released in July 2011. The source material for these genetic stocks was isolated from an archetypical shattercane population found near Lincoln, NE. Release of these genetic stocks makes available shattercane lines with both A3 cytoplasmic male sterility, and ms3 genetic (nuclear) male sterility to facilitate crossing. These genetic stocks also contain juicy (dd) or dry (DD) culms, a visible genetic marker to facilitate screening progeny resulting from crosses. The genetic stocks have immediate application for basic research involving gene flow from cultivated sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] to shattercane and on the fitness of offspring resulting from such crosses
An evaluation of the pressure proof test concept for thin sheet 2024-T3
The concept of pressure proof testing of fuselage structures with fatigue cracks to insure structural integrity was evaluated from a fracture mechanics viewpoint. A generic analytical and experimental investigation was conducted on uniaxially loaded flat panels with crack configurations and stress levels typical of longitudinal lap splice joints in commercial transport aircraft fuselages. The results revealed that the remaining fatigue life after a proof test was longer than that without the proof test because of crack growth retardation due to increased crack closure. However, based on a crack length that is slightly less than the critical value at the maximum proof test stress, the minimum assured life or proof test interval must be no more than 550 pressure cycles for a 1.33 proof factor and 1530 pressure cycles for a 1.5 proof factor to prevent in-flight failures

Changes in Wetland Vegetation in Regulated Lakes in Northern Minnesota, USA Ten Years after a New Regulation Plan Was Implemented
Lake-level regulation alters wetland plant communities and their role in providing faunal habitat. Regulation plans have sometimes been changed to restore ecosystem function; however, few studies have shown the effects of such changes. In 2000, a new plan was implemented for regulation of Rainy Lake and Namakan Reservoir in northern Minnesota, USA. We had studied wetland plant communities under the previous 1970 regulation plan in 1987 and used those data to evaluate changes during 2002–2006 and 2010 resampling efforts using the same methods. Ordinations showed that plant communities changed little on Rainy Lake, where regulation changes were minor. However, on Namakan Reservoir, substantial changes had occurred in both vegetation and faunal habitat within two years, as plants favored by dewatering were replaced by submersed aquatic plants favored by year-round flooding under the new 2000 regulation plan. After ten years, Namakan showed greater similarity to unregulated Lac La Croix but still differed overall. Longer-term studies may be needed to determine if the regulation-plan change continues to alter Namakan plant communities. The speed at which changes began suggests that studies on other regulated lakes should begin in the first growing season following implementation of a new regulation plan and should continue periodically for a decade or longer
