Light and Life: Exotic Photosynthesis in Binary Star Systems
The potential for hosting photosynthetic life on Earth-like planets within
binary/multiple stellar systems was evaluated by modelling the levels of
photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) such planets receive. Combinations of
M and G stars in: (i) close-binary systems; (ii) wide-binary systems and (iii)
three-star systems were investigated and a range of stable radiation
environments found to be possible. These environmental conditions allow for the
possibility of familiar, but also more exotic forms of photosynthetic life,
such as infrared photosynthesisers and organisms specialised for specific

Particle motion and stain removal during simulated abrasive tooth cleaning
Stain removal from teeth is important both to prevent decay and for appearance. This is usually achieved using a filament-based toothbrush with a toothpaste consisting of abrasive particles in a carrier fluid. This work has been carried out to examine how these abrasive particles interact with the filaments and cause material removal from a stain layer on the surface of a tooth. It is important to understand this mechanism as while maximum cleaning efficiency is required, this must not be accompanied by damage to the enamel or dentine substrate. In this work simple abrasive scratch tests were used to investigate stain removal mechanism of two abrasive particles commonly used in tooth cleaning, silica and perlite. Silica particles are granular in shape and very different to perlite particles, which are flat and have thicknesses many times smaller than their width. Initially visualisation studies were carried out with perlite particles to study how they are entrained into a filament/counterface contact. Results were compared with previous studies using silica. Reciprocating scratch tests were then run to study how many filaments have a particle trapped at one moment and are involved in the cleaning process. Stain removal tests were then carried out in a similar manner to establish cleaning rates with the two particle types. Perlite particles were found to be less abrasive than silica. This was because of their shape and how they were entrained into the filament contacts and loaded against a counterface. With both particles subsurface damage during stain removal was found to be minimal. A simple model was built to predict stain removal rates with silica particles, which gave results that correlated well with the experimental data
Failure of retrograde cerebral perfusion to attenuate metabolic changes associated with hypothermic circulatory arrest
AbstractObjectives: Although retrograde cerebral perfusion has become a popular adjunctive technique and may improve cerebral ischemic tolerance during hypothermic circulatory arrest, direct cerebral metabolic benefit has yet to be demonstrated in human subjects. We investigated the post-arrest metabolic phenomena with and without retrograde cerebral perfusion in patients. Methods: In a prospective randomized trial, 42 patients undergoing aortic surgery requiring hypothermic circulatory arrest were allocated to receive hypothermic circulatory arrest alone (n = 21) or hypothermic circulatory arrest with additional retrograde cerebral perfusion (n = 21). Circulatory arrest was commenced at 15°C, and retrograde perfusion was instituted through the superior vena cava at a maximum jugular bulb pressure of 25 mm Hg. Transcranial, paired, repeated samples of the arterial and jugular bulb blood were analyzed for oxygen and glucose. Velocity in the right middle cerebral artery was also measured simultaneously. Results: There were 3 (7.1%) deaths and 3 (7.1%) episodes of neurologic deficit. Mean bypass and circulatory arrest duration (in minutes) were similar between groups (P = .4 and .14). The mean retrograde perfusion duration was 23 minutes. Post-arrest nasopharyngeal temperature was similar (15.3°C vs 15.3°C). Retrograde perfusion did not affect post-arrest oxygen extraction, glucose extraction, or jugular bulb Po2. There was no immediate lactate release immediately after hypothermic circulatory arrest. Conclusions: Retrograde cerebral perfusion did not influence immediate post-arrest nasopharyngeal temperature or cerebral metabolic recovery. The low jugular bulb Po2 suggests equivalent ischemia. These findings cast doubt on the effectiveness of retrograde cerebral perfusion as a metabolic adjunct to hypothermic circulatory arrest.J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg. 2002;123:943-50
Interaction between toothbrushes and toothpaste abrasive particles in simulated tooth cleaning
There are currently many toothbrush designs on the market incorporating different
filament configurations such as filaments at various angles and different lengths and
made from several different materials. In order to understand how the tooth cleaning
process occurs there is a need to investigate in detail how the abrasive particles in a
toothpaste interact with the filaments in a teeth cleaning contact and cause material
removal from a plaque or stain layer.
The following describes the development of optical apparatus to enable the
visualisation of simulated teeth cleaning contacts. Studies have been carried out using
the apparatus to investigate particle entrainment into the contact and how it differs
with varying bristle configurations. The effects of filament stiffness and tip shape
were also investigated. Various types of electric toothbrushes were also tested.
The studies have shown how particles are trapped at the tips of toothbrush filaments.
Particles, suspended in fluid, approach the filament tips, as they pass through they
may become trapped. Greater particle entrainment into the filament tip contact occurs
with a reciprocating action at low filament loads and deflections than with a sliding
motion. Large particles are less likely to enter tip contacts and are trapped between
tips or under the filament bend at higher loads.
Whether the particles are likely to be trapped and how long they remain so depends
on the filament stiffness and degree of splay on loading and the filament
configuration. The direction the filaments point in, the number of filaments in a tuft,
the spacing of the tufts and the way the filaments splay when deflected all have an
influence on entrainment of particles. Tufts with tightly packed stiff filaments which
deflected together on loading were more effective at trapping particles than more flexible filaments that splayed out on loading as they present more of a barrier to
particle entry and exit from the tip region
The convivial and the pastoral in patient-doctor relationships : a multi-country study of patient stories of care, choice and medical authority in cancer diagnostic processes
Experiences of cancer diagnosis are changing in light of both the increasingly technologicalâclinical diagnostic processes and the socioâpolitical context in which interpersonal relations take place. This has raised questions about how we might understand patientâdoctor relationship marked by asymmetries of knowledge and social capital, but that emphasise patientsâ empowered choices and individualised care. As part of an interview study of 155 participants with bowel or lung cancer across Denmark, England and Sweden, we explored participantsâ stories of the decisions made during their cancer diagnostic process. By focusing on the intersections of care, choice and medical authority â a convivial pastoral dynamic â we provide a conceptual analysis of the normative ambivalences in people's stories of their cancer diagnosis. We found that participants drew from care, choice and medical authority to emphasise their relationality and interdependence with their doctors in their stories of their diagnosis. Importantly negotiations of an asymmetrical patientâdoctor relationship were part of an onâgoing realisation of the healthcare processes as a human endeavour. We were therefore able to draw attention to the limitations of dichotomising emancipatoryâempowerment discourses and argue for a theorisation of the patientâdoctor relationship as a contextually bounded and relationally ambivalent humanity
Relationship between advanced maternal age and timing of first developmental evaluation in children with autism
Objective: Mothers of advanced maternal age (AMA) at childbirth (age âĄ35 years) may have different perceptions of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) risk, independent of sociodemographic factors, that may affect ASD identification. We aimed to estimate associations between AMA and both age of a child's first evaluation noting developmental concerns and time from first evaluation to first ASD diagnosis. Methods: We used data for 8-year-olds identified with ASD in the 2008 to 2012 Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network. We estimated differences in age at first evaluation noting developmental concerns and time to first ASD diagnosis by AMA using quantile and Cox regression. Results: Of 10,358 children with ASD, 19.7% had mothers of AMA. AMA was associated with higher educational attainment and previous live births compared with younger mothers. In unadjusted analyses, AMA was associated with earlier first evaluation noting developmental concerns (median 37 vs 40 mo) and patterns in time to first evaluation (hazard ratio: 1.12, 95% confidence interval: 1.06-1.18). Associations between AMA and evaluation timing diminished and were no longer significant after adjustment for socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. Children's intellectual disability did not modify associations between AMA and timing of evaluations. Conclusion: Advanced maternal age is a sociodemographic factor associated with younger age of first evaluation noting developmental concerns in children with ASD, but AMA was not independently associated likely, because it is a consequence or cofactor of maternal education and other sociodemographic characteristics. AMA may be a demographic factor to consider when aiming to screen and evaluate children at risk for ASD
Long-term perturbations due to a disturbing body in elliptic inclined orbit
In the current study, a double-averaged analytical model including the action
of the perturbing body's inclination is developed to study third-body
perturbations. The disturbing function is expanded in the form of Legendre
polynomials truncated up to the second-order term, and then is averaged over
the periods of the spacecraft and the perturbing body. The efficiency of the
double-averaged algorithm is verified with the full elliptic restricted
three-body model. Comparisons with the previous study for a lunar satellite
perturbed by Earth are presented to measure the effect of the perturbing body's
inclination, and illustrate that the lunar obliquity with the value 6.68\degree
is important for the mean motion of a lunar satellite. The application to the
Mars-Sun system is shown to prove the validity of the double-averaged model. It
can be seen that the algorithm is effective to predict the long-term behavior
of a high-altitude Martian spacecraft perturbed by Sun. The double-averaged
model presented in this paper is also applicable to other celestial systems.Comment: 28 pages, 6 figure
Evidence of Final-State Suppression of High-p_T Hadrons in Au + Au Collisions Using d + Au Measurements at RHIC
Transverse momentum spectra of charged hadrons with 6 GeV/c have
been measured near mid-rapidity (0.2 1.4) by the PHOBOS experiment
at RHIC in Au + Au and d + Au collisions at . The spectra for different collision centralities are compared to collisions at the same energy. The resulting nuclear modification
factor for central Au + Au collisions shows evidence of strong suppression of
charged hadrons in the high- region ( GeV/c). In contrast, the d +
Au nuclear modification factor exhibits no suppression of the high-
yields. These measurements suggest a large energy loss of the high-
particles in the highly interacting medium created in the central Au + Au
collisions. The lack of suppression in d + Au collisions suggests that it is
unlikely that initial state effects can explain the suppression in the central

Prevalence of intellectual disability among eight-year-old children from selected communities in the United States, 2014
Background: Children with intellectual disability (ID), characterized by impairments in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior, benefit from early identification and access to services. Previous U.S. estimates used administrative data or parent report with limited information for demographic subgroups. Objective: Using empiric measures we examined ID characteristics among 8-year-old children and estimated prevalence by sex, race/ethnicity, geographic area and socioeconomic status (SES) area indicators. Methods: We analyzed data for 8-year-old children in 9 geographic areas participating in the 2014 Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network. Children with ID were identified through record review of IQ test data. Census and American Community Survey data were used to estimate the denominator. Results: Overall, 11.8 per 1,000 (1.2%) had ID (IQ †70), of whom 39% (n = 998) also had autism spectrum disorder. Among children with ID, 1,823 had adaptive behavior test scores for which 64% were characterized as impaired. ID prevalence per 1,000 was 15.8 (95% confidence interval [95% CI], 15.0â16.5) among males and 7.7 (95% CI, 7.2â8.2) among females. ID prevalence was 17.7 (95% CI, 16.6â18.9) among children who were non-Hispanic black; 12.0 (95% CI, 11.1â13.0), among Hispanic; 8.6 (95% CI, 7.1â10.4), among non-Hispanic Asian; and 8.0 (95% CI, 7.5â8.6), among non-Hispanic white. Prevalence varied across geographic areas and was inversely associated with SES. Conclusions: ID prevalence varied substantively among racial, ethnic, geographic, and SES groups. Results can inform strategies to enhance identification and improve access to services particularly for children who are minorities or living in areas with lower SES
