Time, spatial, and spectral resolution of the Halpha line-formation region of Deneb and Rigel with the VEGA/CHARA interferometer
BA-type supergiants are amongst the most optically-bright stars. They are
observable in extragalactic environments, hence potential accurate distance
indicators. Emission activity in the Halpha line of the BA supergiants Rigel
(B8Ia) and Deneb (A2Ia) is indicative of presence of localized time-dependent
mass ejections. Here, we employ optical interferometry to study the Halpha
line-formation region in these stellar environments. High spatial- (0.001
arcsec) and spectral- (R=30 000) resolution observations of Halpha were
obtained with the visible recombiner VEGA installed on the CHARA
interferometer, using the S1S2 array-baseline (34m). Six independent
observations were done on Deneb over the years 2008 and 2009, and two on Rigel
in 2009. We analyze this dataset with the 1D non-LTE radiative-transfer code
CMFGEN, and assess the impact of the wind on the visible and near-IR
interferometric signatures, using both Balmer-line and continuum photons. We
observe a visibility decrease in Halpha for both Rigel and Deneb, suggesting
that the line-formation region is extended (1.5-1.75 R*). We observe a
significant visibility decrease for Deneb in the SiII6371 line. We witness time
variations in the differential phase for Deneb, implying an inhomogeneous and
unsteady circumstellar environment, while no such variability is seen in
differential visibilities. Radiative-transfer modeling of Deneb, with allowance
for stellar-wind mass loss, accounts fairly well for the observed decrease in
the Halpha visibility. Based on the observed differential visibilities, we
estimate that the mass-loss rate of Deneb has changed by less than 5%
Wavy Strings: Black or Bright?
Recent developments in string theory have brought forth a considerable
interest in time-dependent hair on extended objects. This novel new hair is
typically characterized by a wave profile along the horizon and angular
momentum quantum numbers in the transverse space. In this work, we
present an extensive treatment of such oscillating black objects, focusing on
their geometric properties. We first give a theorem of purely geometric nature,
stating that such wavy hair cannot be detected by any scalar invariant built
out of the curvature and/or matter fields. However, we show that the tidal
forces detected by an infalling observer diverge at the `horizon' of a black
string superposed with a vibration in any mode with . The same
argument applied to longitudinal () waves detects only finite tidal
forces. We also provide an example with a manifestly smooth metric, proving
that at least a certain class of these longitudinal waves have regular

Phenome-wide association analysis of LDL-cholesterol lowering genetic variants in PCSK9
Abstract: Background: We characterised the phenotypic consequence of genetic variation at the PCSK9 locus and compared findings with recent trials of pharmacological inhibitors of PCSK9. Methods: Published and individual participant level data (300,000+ participants) were combined to construct a weighted PCSK9 gene-centric score (GS). Seventeen randomized placebo controlled PCSK9 inhibitor trials were included, providing data on 79,578 participants. Results were scaled to a one mmol/L lower LDL-C concentration. Results: The PCSK9 GS (comprising 4 SNPs) associations with plasma lipid and apolipoprotein levels were consistent in direction with treatment effects. The GS odds ratio (OR) for myocardial infarction (MI) was 0.53 (95% CI 0.42; 0.68), compared to a PCSK9 inhibitor effect of 0.90 (95% CI 0.86; 0.93). For ischemic stroke ORs were 0.84 (95% CI 0.57; 1.22) for the GS, compared to 0.85 (95% CI 0.78; 0.93) in the drug trials. ORs with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) were 1.29 (95% CI 1.11; 1.50) for the GS, as compared to 1.00 (95% CI 0.96; 1.04) for incident T2DM in PCSK9 inhibitor trials. No genetic associations were observed for cancer, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or Alzheimer’s disease – outcomes for which large-scale trial data were unavailable. Conclusions: Genetic variation at the PCSK9 locus recapitulates the effects of therapeutic inhibition of PCSK9 on major blood lipid fractions and MI. While indicating an increased risk of T2DM, no other possible safety concerns were shown; although precision was moderate
New genetic loci link adipose and insulin biology to body fat distribution.
Body fat distribution is a heritable trait and a well-established predictor of adverse metabolic outcomes, independent of overall adiposity. To increase our understanding of the genetic basis of body fat distribution and its molecular links to cardiometabolic traits, here we conduct genome-wide association meta-analyses of traits related to waist and hip circumferences in up to 224,459 individuals. We identify 49 loci (33 new) associated with waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index (BMI), and an additional 19 loci newly associated with related waist and hip circumference measures (P < 5 × 10(-8)). In total, 20 of the 49 waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for BMI loci show significant sexual dimorphism, 19 of which display a stronger effect in women. The identified loci were enriched for genes expressed in adipose tissue and for putative regulatory elements in adipocytes. Pathway analyses implicated adipogenesis, angiogenesis, transcriptional regulation and insulin resistance as processes affecting fat distribution, providing insight into potential pathophysiological mechanisms
Design and baseline characteristics of the finerenone in reducing cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in diabetic kidney disease trial
Background: Among people with diabetes, those with kidney disease have exceptionally high rates of cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality and progression of their underlying kidney disease. Finerenone is a novel, nonsteroidal, selective mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist that has shown to reduce albuminuria in type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) while revealing only a low risk of hyperkalemia. However, the effect of finerenone on CV and renal outcomes has not yet been investigated in long-term trials.
Patients and Methods: The Finerenone in Reducing CV Mortality and Morbidity in Diabetic Kidney Disease (FIGARO-DKD) trial aims to assess the efficacy and safety of finerenone compared to placebo at reducing clinically important CV and renal outcomes in T2D patients with CKD. FIGARO-DKD is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, event-driven trial running in 47 countries with an expected duration of approximately 6 years. FIGARO-DKD randomized 7,437 patients with an estimated glomerular filtration rate >= 25 mL/min/1.73 m(2) and albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio >= 30 to <= 5,000 mg/g). The study has at least 90% power to detect a 20% reduction in the risk of the primary outcome (overall two-sided significance level alpha = 0.05), the composite of time to first occurrence of CV death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or hospitalization for heart failure.
Conclusions: FIGARO-DKD will determine whether an optimally treated cohort of T2D patients with CKD at high risk of CV and renal events will experience cardiorenal benefits with the addition of finerenone to their treatment regimen.

Solution generating techniques in low energy effective string theory
In this thesis we investigate three approaches to generating new solutions to low energy string theory. The first one consists in gauging WZW models. We construct a gauged extension of a model first introduced by Witten and Nappi. Then we look at Garfinkle's wave generating technique and apply it on a known five-dimensional black string to generate a new family of solutions. We investigate their properties with a special emphasis on singularities. Finally, in the last part, we study O(d, d + p) transformations and duality and we explore the effect of gauge transformations on those transformations. With the latter, we are able to answer a question raised by Burgess, Myers and Quevedo on this issue
Solutions of two matrix models for the DIII generator ensemble
In this work we solve two new matrix models, using standard and new techniques. The two models are based on matrix ensembles not previously considered. They are represented by special forms of antisymmetric matrices and are classified in the DIII generator ensemble. It is shown that, in the double scaling limit, their free energy has the same behavior as previous models describing oriented and unoriented surfaces. We also found an additional solution for the chapter 3 model

Le site du 88 rue de la Mairie à Sablonceaux a fait l’objet d’une fouille archéologique préventive entre le 8 juin et le 17 juillet 2020. Cette opération a porté sur une superficie de 3080 m². La fouille a livré un important lot de céramique, près de 65 kg représentant une cinquantaine d’individus, attribué à la fin de l’âge du Bronze ancien (B2). Une quinzaine de vases sont complets ou sub-complets et étaient conservés en position primaire de dépôt. Ces récipients étaient à l’origine semi-enterrés et principalement destinés au stockage de denrées alimentaires.L’étude carpologique a mis en évidence la présence de glands, de noisettes et de fruits sauvages suggérant une économie de subsistance orientée vers la cueillette.L’absence de bâtiment ou de foyer suggère que nous ne sommes pas sur un site d’habitat à proprement parler mais plutôt sur une aire domestique périphérique.Le site n’a pas connu d’occupation postérieure, ce qui explique la bonne conservation des vestiges protohistoriques
