Anisotropic superconductivity mediated by phonons in layered compounds with weak screening effect
Anisotropic pairing interactions mediated by phonons are examined in layer
systems. It is shown that the screening effects become weaker when the layer
spacing increases. Then the anisotropic components of the pairing interactions
increase with the screening length since the momentum dependence changes. As a
result, various types of anisotropic superconductivity occur depending on the
parameter region. For example, p-wave superconductivity occurs when the
short-range part of Coulomb repulsion is strong and the layer spacing is large.
Two kinds of inter-layer pairing may occur when the layer spacing is not too
large. Although the phonon contribution to the d-wave pairing interaction is
weaker than the p-wave interaction, it increases with the layer spacing.
Relevance of the present results to organic superconductors, high-T_c cuprates,

Influence of Gap Extrema on the Tunneling Conductance Near an Impurity in an Anisotropic Superconductor
Changes: figures added in postscript form, Eq. (7) and various typos
corrected. We examine the effect of an impurity on the nearby tunneling
conductance in an anisotropically-gapped superconductor. The variation of the
conductance has pronounced spatial dependence which depends strongly on the
Fermi surface location of gap extrema. In particular, different gap symmetries
produce profoundly different spatial features in the conductance. These effects
may be detectable with an STM measurement on the surface of a high-temperature

Scaling Analysis of Fluctuating Strength Function
We propose a new method to analyze fluctuations in the strength function
phenomena in highly excited nuclei. Extending the method of multifractal
analysis to the cases where the strength fluctuations do not obey power scaling
laws, we introduce a new measure of fluctuation, called the local scaling
dimension, which characterizes scaling behavior of the strength fluctuation as
a function of energy bin width subdividing the strength function. We discuss
properties of the new measure by applying it to a model system which simulates
the doorway damping mechanism of giant resonances. It is found that the local
scaling dimension characterizes well fluctuations and their energy scales of
fine structures in the strength function associated with the damped collective

Alpha scattering and capture reactions in the A = 7 system at low energies
Differential cross sections for He- scattering were measured in
the energy range up to 3 MeV. These data together with other available
experimental results for He and H scattering were
analyzed in the framework of the optical model using double-folded potentials.
The optical potentials obtained were used to calculate the astrophysical
S-factors of the capture reactions HeBe and
HLi, and the branching ratios for the transitions into
the two final Be and Li bound states, respectively. For
HeBe excellent agreement between calculated and
experimental data is obtained. For HLi a value
has been found which is a factor of about 1.5 larger than the adopted value.

Microwave determination of the quasiparticle scattering time in YBa2Cu3O6.95
We report microwave surface resistance (Rs) measurements on two very-high-quality YBa2Cu3O6.95 crystals which exhibit extremely low residual loss at 1.2 K (2-6 μΩ at 2 GHz), a broad, reproducible peak at around 38 K, and a rapid increase in loss, by 4 orders of magnitude, between 80 and 93 K. These data provide one ingredient in the determination of the temperature dependence of the real part of the microwave conductivity, σ1(T), and of the quasiparticle scattering time. The other necessary ingredient is an accurate knowledge of the magnitude and temperature dependence of the London penetration depth, λ(T). This is derived from published data, from microwave data of Anlage, Langley, and co-workers and from, high-quality μSR data. We infer, from a careful analysis of all available data, that λ2(0)/λ2(T) is well approximated by the simple function 1-t2, where t=T/Tc, and that the low-temperature data are incompatible with the existence of an s-wave, BCS-like gap. Combining the Rs and λ(T) data, we find that σ1(T), has a broad peak around 32 K with a value about 20 times that at Tc. Using a generalized two-fluid model, we extract the temperature dependence of the quasiparticle scattering rate which follows an exponential law, exp(T/T0), where T0≊12 K, for T between 15 and 84 K. Such a temperature dependence has previously been observed in measurements of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. Both the uncertainties in our analysis and the implications for the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity are discussed
High aboveground carbon stock of African tropical montane forests
Tropical forests store 40-50 per cent of terrestrial vegetation carbon(1). However, spatial variations in aboveground live tree biomass carbon (AGC) stocks remain poorly understood, in particular in tropical montane forests(2). Owing to climatic and soil changes with increasing elevation(3), AGC stocks are lower in tropical montane forests compared with lowland forests(2). Here we assemble and analyse a dataset of structurally intact old-growth forests (AfriMont) spanning 44 montane sites in 12 African countries. We find that montane sites in the AfriMont plot network have a mean AGC stock of 149.4 megagrams of carbon per hectare (95% confidence interval 137.1-164.2), which is comparable to lowland forests in the African Tropical Rainforest Observation Network(4) and about 70 per cent and 32 per cent higher than averages from plot networks in montane(2,5,6) and lowland(7) forests in the Neotropics, respectively. Notably, our results are two-thirds higher than the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change default values for these forests in Africa(8). We find that the low stem density and high abundance of large trees of African lowland forests(4) is mirrored in the montane forests sampled. This carbon store is endangered: we estimate that 0.8 million hectares of old-growth African montane forest have been lost since 2000. We provide country-specific montane forest AGC stock estimates modelled from our plot network to help to guide forest conservation and reforestation interventions. Our findings highlight the need for conserving these biodiverse(9,10) and carbon-rich ecosystems. The aboveground carbon stock of a montane African forest network is comparable to that of a lowland African forest network and two-thirds higher than default values for these montane forests.Peer reviewe
AUTOMAÇÃO DOS OPERADORES DE AGREGAÇÃO E DESLOCAMENTO PARA GENERALIZAÇÃO CARTOGRÁFICA NA REPRESENTAÇÃO DE REDES SOCIAIS
A generalização cartográfica sempre teve um caráter subjetivo, o que implica que mapas de mesma escala derivados de um mesmo mapa fonte, por diferentes cartógrafos, resultem em diferentes representações. Além disso, com a evolução da informática surgiu a necessidade da padronização deste processo para que os produtos cartográficos gerados fossem sempre os mesmos. Nesta pesquisa aborda-se a aplicação da generalização na representação de redes sociais de assistência social. Os nós desta rede são os atores sociais - indivíduos, grupos ou instituições - que atuam em uma região e as ligações existentes entre os mesmos são os arcos, sendo que estas ligações não são físicas. O foco do estudo é a automação dos operadores geométricos de agregação e deslocamento agindo sobre as feições pontuais, que são os atores sociais. Quando há sobreposição entre os atores sociais, os que possuem mesma classificação são agregados gerando um novo símbolo. Já o deslocamento é utilizado para resolver a sobreposição entre atores sociais de classes diferentes. Para tanto, foi desenvolvido um programa para a execução da generalização cujos resultados são apresentados neste artigo
The Earth: Plasma Sources, Losses, and Transport Processes
This paper reviews the state of knowledge concerning the source of magnetospheric plasma at Earth. Source of plasma, its acceleration and transport throughout the system, its consequences on system dynamics, and its loss are all discussed. Both observational and modeling advances since the last time this subject was covered in detail (Hultqvist et al., Magnetospheric Plasma Sources and Losses, 1999) are addressed
