Impact of management practices on persistent and overall technical efficiency
Managerial capacity builds over the years and the accumulated knowledge and practice affect the outcome of the period that follows, with long-run/permanent effects on inefficiency. Therefore predictions of the influence of managerial capacity on the time-varying inefficiency, regularly estimated as overall efficiency, may be biased. This study analysed the influence of farm management practices on both the persistent and overall efficiency. The empirical application in the study was pig farms in Sweden. Data from the Swedish Farm Accounting Survey (FAS) 2002-2012 and information from a survey related to managerial practices in Sweden were used. The results suggest that managerial practices shape/are related with the permanent efficiency of farms. Managerial experience, agricultural education, and economy-driven goals were found to have positive effect, whereas managerial courses, use of updated budgets, and PigWin software were found to be positively related with the persistent efficiency on the farms. Farmers' focusing on meeting market demand in terms of quality was found to be negatively related with the persistent efficiency. Overall technical efficiency was positively related only with the use of PigWin software, therefore a hidden causality effect on overall technical efficiency was obtained for managerial experience, agricultural education and economy-driven goals
A Systematic Mapping of Research on Sustainability Dimensions at Farm-level in Pig Production
We systematically mapped the scientific literature on the sustainability of pig production at farm-level. Sustainability was considered holistically, covering its economic, environmental, and social dimensions, each consisting of a broad range of different aspects that may contradict or reinforce each other. Literature published between January 2000 and March 2020 with a geographical focus on Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand was included. A standard template with predefined keywords was used to summarise aspects of each sustainability dimension covered in identified papers. We found that papers analysing environmental sustainability were more frequent than papers analysing economic or social sustainability. However, there are many different aspects within each dimension of sustainability, hampering comparisons between studies. In addition, each dimension of sustainability has many sides, making it difficult to compare different studies, and different dimensions and aspects may have complex interrelations. Our systematic literature review revealed that these interrelations are not well understood and that possible trade-offs or synergies between different aspects of sustainability dimensions remain unidentified. This systematic mapping of the current literature on farm-level sustainability in pig production can support a more informed discussion on knowledge gaps and help prioritise future research at farm-level to enhance sustainability in pig production
AGR2, an Endoplasmic Reticulum Protein, Is Secreted into the Gastrointestinal Mucus
The MUC2 mucin is the major constituent of the two mucus layers in colon. Mice lacking the disulfide isomerase-like protein Agr2 have been shown to be more susceptible to colon inflammation. The Agr2(-/-) mice have less filled goblet cells and were now shown to have a poorly developed inner colon mucus layer. We could not show AGR2 covalently bound to recombinant MUC2 N- and C-termini as have previously been suggested. We found relatively high concentrations of Agr2 in secreted mucus throughout the murine gastrointestinal tract, suggesting that Agr2 may play extracellular roles. In tissue culture (CHO-K1) cells, AGR2 is normally not secreted. Replacement of the single Cys in AGR2 with Ser (C81S) allowed secretion, suggesting that modification of this Cys might provide a mechanism for circumventing the KTEL endoplasmic reticulum retention signal. In conclusion, these results suggest that AGR2 has both intracellular and extracellular effects in the intestine
Leys from a Nordic perspective
The project involved creating a popular scientific review of the cultivation and use of leys for livestock. Target groups are the agricultural sector and industry. The project had four work packages (WP): crop production, harvest and conservation, feed value for different animals, and economy. Within each work package, search strings were developed and inclusion criteria defined, and a database for each WP developed through searching in online databases. Each selected article was assessed first on the title (include or exclude), second based on reading the abstract, and third based on reading the article. The review provides an extensive list of literature related to ley production and use, a description of the most important findings, and suggestions for future research
Cerebrospinal fluid lipocalin 2 as a novel biomarker for the differential diagnosis of vascular dementia
The clinical diagnosis of vascular dementia (VaD) is based on imaging criteria, and specific biochemical markers are not available. Here, we investigated the potential of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) lipocalin 2 (LCN2), a secreted glycoprotein that has been suggested as mediating neuronal damage in vascular brain injuries. The study included four independent cohorts with a total n = 472 samples. LCN2 was significantly elevated in VaD compared to controls, Alzheimer's disease (AD), other neurodegenerative dementias, and cognitively unimpaired patients with cerebrovascular disease. LCN2 discriminated VaD from AD without coexisting VaD with high accuracy. The main findings were consistent over all cohorts. Neuropathology disclosed a high percentage of macrophages linked to subacute infarcts, reactive astrocytes, and damaged blood vessels in multi-infarct dementia when compared to AD. We conclude that CSF LCN2 is a promising candidate biochemical marker in the differential diagnosis of VaD and neurodegenerative dementias
Results from the intercalibration of optical low light calibration sources 2011
Following the 38th Annual European Meeting on Atmospheric Studies by Optical Methods in Siuntio in Finland, an intercalibration workshop for optical low light calibration sources was held in SodankylĂ€, Finland. The main purpose of this workshop was to provide a comparable scale for absolute measurements of aurora and airglow. All sources brought to the intercalibration workshop were compared to the Fritz Peak reference source using the Lindau Calibration Photometer built by Wilhelm Barke and Hans Lauche in 1984. The results were compared to several earlier intercalibration workshops. It was found that most sources were fairly stable over time, with errors in the range of 5â25%. To further validate the results, two sources were also intercalibrated at UNIS, Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Preliminary analysis indicates agreement with the intercalibration in SodankylĂ€ within about 15â25%.publishedVersio
Parenthood and factors that influence outdoor recreational physical activity from a gender perspective
Background: A physically active life promotes both physical and mental health,
increasing well-being and quality of life. Physical activity (PA) performed
outdoors has been found to be particularly good for promoting well-being.
However, participation in PA can change during the course of a lifetime.
Parenthood has been found to be a life event associated with decreased PA,
especially among women, although studies in the field are sparse. The aim of
this study was to investigate participation in outdoor recreational PA, and
factors influencing participation among parents-to-be, with and without
previous children, from a gender perspective.
Methods: This study included baseline data from parents-to-be, 224 women and
208 men, from the municipality of Karlskrona in south-east Sweden. Data
collection was carried out during 2008-2009. We measured the self-reported
amount of outdoor recreational PA undertaken during the last year and analysed
the probability of participating in this PA using 25 variables covering
individual and socioeconomic factors.
Results: Seventy-six per cent of the women and 65% of the men had participated
in outdoor recreational PA, varying from several times per month to every day,
over a 12-month period prior to one month before pregnancy. Participation in PA
indoors and owning a dog or a horse emerged as the most important factors
associated with the probability of participation in outdoor recreational PA.
Men were affected by a greater number of factors than women, for example men
who had a family situation that permitted outdoor recreational PA participated
in activities to a greater extent than men without such a family situation. The
physical aspect, i.e. improved physical condition, staying power and vigour,
also played a significant role with regard to participation among men.
Conclusions: Becoming a parent is a life-changing event that affects
participation in PA. By offering family-oriented PA choices that involve both
parents and children, midwives and health promoters can encourage parents to be
active and to support each other. The promotion of outdoor recreational PA,
which also has restorative effects on well-being, needs to focus on activities
which are attractive and affordable for the majority of both women and men
A Common Missense Variant in the ATP Receptor P2X7 Is Associated with Reduced Risk of Cardiovascular Events
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) regulates inflammatory cells by activation of the P2X(7) receptor. We hypothesized that polymorphisms in P2RX7 influence the risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD), ischemic stroke (IS) and cardiovascular risk factors and tested this hypothesis using genetic association studies. METHODS: Two loss-of-function SNPs in P2RX7 were genotyped in 1244 IHD cases and 2488 controls as well as 5969 individuals with cardiovascular risk factors. Eleven SNPs in a 250 kb region on chromosome 12 spanning P2RX7 as well as neighboring genes OASL, P2RX4 and CAMKK2 were genotyped in 4138 individuals with IS and 2528 controls. Association was examined using linear and logistic regression models with an additive genetic model. RESULTS: The common loss-of-function variant rs3751143 was significantly associated with a decreased risk of IHD in smokers (P = 0.03) as well as decreased risk of IS (OR 0.89; 95% CI = 0.81-0.97; P = 0.012). In addition, an intronic SNP in CAMKK2, rs2686342, were associated with a decreased risk of IS (OR 0.89; 95% CI = 0.82-0.97; P = 0.011). In subgroup analyses, both SNPs were associated with decreased risk of IS in individuals with hypertension (P = 0.045 and 0.015, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: A common loss-of-function missense variant in the gene encoding the P2X(7) receptor is associated with reduced risk of IS and with IHD in smokers. These findings might implicate a role of purinergic signaling in atherogenesis or atherothrombosis
