    Asteroid (101955) Bennu’s weak boulders and thermally anomalous equator

    Thermal inertia and surface roughness are proxies for the physical characteristics of planetary surfaces. Global maps of these two properties distinguish the boulder population on near-Earth asteroid (NEA) (101955) Bennu into two types that differ in strength, and both have lower thermal inertia than expected for boulders and meteorites. Neither has strongly temperature-dependent thermal properties. The weaker boulder type probably would not survive atmospheric entry and thus may not be represented in the meteorite collection. The maps also show a high–thermal inertia band at Bennu’s equator, which might be explained by processes such as compaction or strength sorting during mass movement, but these explanations are not wholly consistent with other data. Our findings imply that other C-complex NEAs likely have boulders similar to those on Bennu rather than finer-particulate regoliths. A tentative correlation between albedo and thermal inertia of C-complex NEAs may be due to relative abundances of boulder types

    Properties of Rubble-Pile Asteroid (101955) Bennu from OSIRIS-REx Imaging and Thermal Analysis

    Establishing the abundance and physical properties of regolith and boulders on asteroids is crucial for understanding the formation and degradation mechanisms at work on their surfaces. Using images and thermal data from NASA's Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft, we show that asteroid (101955) Bennu's surface is globally rough, dense with boulders, and low in albedo. The number of boulders is surprising given Bennu's moderate thermal inertia, suggesting that simple models linking thermal inertia to particle size do not adequately capture the complexity relating these properties. At the same time, we find evidence for a wide range of particle sizes with distinct albedo characteristics. Our findings imply that ages of Bennu's surface particles span from the disruption of the asteroid's parent body (boulders) to recent in situ production (micrometre-scale particles)

    The dynamic geophysical environment of (101955) Bennu based on OSIRIS-REx measurements

    The top-shaped morphology characteristic of asteroid (101955) Bennu, often found among fast-spinning asteroids and binary asteroid primaries, may have contributed substantially to binary asteroid formation. Yet a detailed geophysical analysis of this morphology for a fast-spinning asteroid has not been possible prior to the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission. Combining the measured Bennu mass and shape obtained during the Preliminary Survey phase of the OSIRIS-REx mission, we find a notable transition in Bennu’s surface slopes within its rotational Roche lobe, defined as the region where material is energetically trapped to the surface. As the intersection of the rotational Roche lobe with Bennu’s surface has been most recently migrating towards its equator (given Bennu’s increasing spin rate), we infer that Bennu’s surface slopes have been changing across its surface within the last million years. We also find evidence for substantial density heterogeneity within this body, suggesting that its interior is a mixture of voids and boulders. The presence of such heterogeneity and Bennu’s top shape are consistent with spin-induced failure at some point in its past, although the manner of its failure cannot yet be determined. Future measurements by the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft will provide insight into and may resolve questions regarding the formation and evolution of Bennu’s top-shape morphology and its link to the formation of binary asteroids

    Evidence for widespread hydrated minerals on asteroid (101955) Bennu

    Early spectral data from the Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission reveal evidence for abundant hydrated minerals on the surface of near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu in the form of a near-infrared absorption near 2.7 µm and thermal infrared spectral features that are most similar to those of aqueously altered CM-type carbonaceous chondrites. We observe these spectral features across the surface of Bennu, and there is no evidence of substantial rotational variability at the spatial scales of tens to hundreds of metres observed to date. In the visible and near-infrared (0.4 to 2.4 µm) Bennu’s spectrum appears featureless and with a blue (negative) slope, confirming previous ground-based observations. Bennu may represent a class of objects that could have brought volatiles and organic chemistry to Earth

    Burnout among surgeons before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: an international survey

    Background: SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had many significant impacts within the surgical realm, and surgeons have been obligated to reconsider almost every aspect of daily clinical practice. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study reported in compliance with the CHERRIES guidelines and conducted through an online platform from June 14th to July 15th, 2020. The primary outcome was the burden of burnout during the pandemic indicated by the validated Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure. Results: Nine hundred fifty-four surgeons completed the survey. The median length of practice was 10 years; 78.2% included were male with a median age of 37 years old, 39.5% were consultants, 68.9% were general surgeons, and 55.7% were affiliated with an academic institution. Overall, there was a significant increase in the mean burnout score during the pandemic; longer years of practice and older age were significantly associated with less burnout. There were significant reductions in the median number of outpatient visits, operated cases, on-call hours, emergency visits, and research work, so, 48.2% of respondents felt that the training resources were insufficient. The majority (81.3%) of respondents reported that their hospitals were included in the management of COVID-19, 66.5% felt their roles had been minimized; 41% were asked to assist in non-surgical medical practices, and 37.6% of respondents were included in COVID-19 management. Conclusions: There was a significant burnout among trainees. Almost all aspects of clinical and research activities were affected with a significant reduction in the volume of research, outpatient clinic visits, surgical procedures, on-call hours, and emergency cases hindering the training. Systematic and thorough treatment of the fundamental principles rather than presenting the large mass of facts has been stressed. The book includes some of the historical and humanistic background of thermodynamics, but without affecting the continuity of the analytical treatment. For a clearer and more profound understanding of thermodynamics this book is highly recommended. In this respect, the author believes that a sound grounding in classical thermodynamics is an essential prerequisite for the understanding of statistical thermodynamics. Such a book comprising the two wide branches of thermodynamics is in fact unprecedented. Being a written work dealing systematically with the two main branches of thermodynamics, namely classical thermodynamics and statistical thermodynamics, together with some important indexes under only one cover, this treatise is so eminently useful

    Dielectric behaviour of nylon 6

    Dielectric measurements over a frequency band from 0.2 to 10 MHz were first made on dry samples of nylon 6 of different particle size under vacuum at temperatures from 10 to 70 °C, and then on various humid samples at 25 °C. The dependence of the dielectric constant on particle size was related to the crystallinity degree of the sample, which was determined by the infrared absorption method. Two relaxation effects were detected in the dry state, the magnitudes of which increased with decrease of particle size thus indicating that they originated in the non-crystalline regions of the polymer. One relaxation process with a large distribution of relaxation times appeared below the glass transition temperature, and the other appeared above. The former was suggested to ne to a Maxwell-Wagner effect arising from the inhomogeneity of the sample together with some dipole relaxations (β) Motions of the dipoles CO and NH groups in the non-crystal- were possible. The latter relaxation (α) was attributed to co-operative motions in the main chains of these regions. As regards the effect of humidity on the dielectric behaviour of nylon 6, it was suggested that the water molecules were first involved in hygroden-bond formation, and finally a conduction network similar to that of ice was produced

    Dipole moments and tautomeric equilibria of some aroylacetanilides

    The dipole moments of acetanilide and a series of five p-substituted benzoylacetanilides, 1a — e, were determined in benzene at 30 °C. The method of comparing the observed dipole moment of a compound with those calculated for its various hypothetical structures was employed to deduce firstly the most probable configuration of acetanilide and subsequently, those of the keto and enol tautomers of the aroylacetanilides. The equilibrium constants, KT's, derived from dipole moments results were satisfactorily correlated by the Hammet substituent constants, σ+'s, the equation being log KT = 0.724 σ+ — 0.132, with r = 0.996 and s = ± 0.032

    Molecular interactions of some picolines with benzene and carbon tetrachloride

    Excess volumes, VE, of binary mixtures of α-picoline, β-picoline, and γ-picoline with benzene and carbon tetrachloride, and dipole moments, μ2, of picolines in these mixtures have been measured as a function of a composition at 20° to 50°C. The VE data are negative for all mixtures studied, and exhibit a minimum at a 1 : 1 molar ratio, suggesting that alternate molecules of the two components are probably involved in a packing pattern. The [math] data are greatest in the very dilute solutions and gradually decrease with increasing picoline concentration, indicating the applicability of Onsager’s model over the entire concentration range of picolines. The results are discussed in terms of dipole association which seems to be stronger in carbon tetrachloride solutions than in benzene solutions
