Human ethology: Age and sex differences in mall walking

    No full text
Well-controlled experimental research has examined the biomechanical aspects of walking in homo sapiens on a track. The research reported here also examined cadence, velocity, and stride length for estimated ages ranging from 15 to over 55 years but in a shopping mall. Women at all ages walked faster than men in the mall setting which was opposite to what was found in the track research. Apparendy context may influence how fast people walk. Hunter-gatherer differences could explain these results. © Perceptual and Motor Skills 1997

Evaluation and optimization of multiple fluorophore analysis of a Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm

Conventional laser scanning microscopy for multiple fluorescent stains can be a useful tool if the problems of autofluorescence and cross-talk are eliminated. The technique of spectral imaging was employed to unmix five different fluorophores – ranging in emission from 435 to 665 nm – applied to a Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm with overlapping spectra and which was not possible using traditional channel mode operation. Using lambda scanning and linear unmixing, the five fluorophores could be distinguished with regions of differentiation apparent

In order to study the nuclear behavior during the sexual cycle of Agaricus blazei , some coloration and fluorescent stain techniques were tested for a method standardization for fut ure cytogenetical works. Among the studied techniques (Schiff reactive, Giemsa, and fluorescent stain - DAPI), the Giemsa and fluorescent DAPI technique provided the best results. With Giemsa stain, it was possible to visualize multinucleate cell compartments. It was not possible to stain compartmental delimitation with DAPI stain, which was possible only with an additional fluorescent stain - calcofluor, which is specific for chitin

New insights into the impact of digital signage as a retail atmospheric tool

This paper investigates the previously little-researched role of digital signage (DS) in retail atmospherics, using an environmental psychology framework, drawing support from the Limited Capacity Model of Mediated Message Processing (LCM). DS consists of screen displays in public spaces showing video. The method consisted of a structured questionnaires quasi-experiment (n=357), comparing before and after DS installation against an unchanged control mall. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of DS, which has a positive effect on shoppers’ approach behaviours such as spending, mediated by perceptions of the retail environment and positive affect. Results are limited as the DS screens content was information-based, whereas according to LCM, people pay more attention to emotion-eliciting communications. The results have practical implications as digital signage appeals to employed shoppers. This study contributes to theory by providing a rare longitudinal environmental psychology study of the effects of an atmospheric stimulus on real shoppers in a real retail context
