Electroencephalography associated with thermal discomfort induced by temperature upward ramping
This study investigates the brainwaves associated with thermal discomfort induced by temperature upward ramping. This experiment was conducted on 35 university students. Participants stayed for 40 minutes in a climate chamber where the temperature gradually increased, and at the same time, EEG measurements and thermal comfort answers were performed. As a result of the temperature increasing, the participants felt uncomfortable and the relative power value of all frequency bands gradually increased. As a result of correlation analysis of individual thermal comfort change and relative power change, the alpha power at Cz, C3, the beta power at Fz, Cz, and C4 and the gamma power at C4 increased.publishedVersio
Does the attractiveness of K‐culture shape the enjoyment of foreign language learners of Korean?
Attraction to the target culture can be a reason to study the language, especially in the case of languages other than English (LOTEs). Recently, the number of Korean language learners has surged alongside the growing popularity of Korean pop culture (K‐pop). However, it is unknown whether the initial attraction to the culture and the first steps in that direction shape foreign language (FL) emotions in the longer term. To fill this gap, this mixed‐methods study examined to what extent the attractiveness of the Korean Culture (K‐culture) predicts foreign language enjoyment (FLE) after controlling for other established learner variables (i.e., the length of FL study, FL proficiency, frequency of FL use outside of class, and attitudes toward the teacher and FL) through sequential regression analysis. The quantitative findings are complemented by the open‐ended responses to the sources of FLE using the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages 3Ps framework (products, practices, and perspectives) through NVivo. A total of 782 university students studying Korean as FL completed an online survey on the attractiveness of K‐culture and FLE. The results showed that the attitude toward the teacher and attractiveness of K‐culture are the strongest predictors of FLE
MicroRNA-29a suppresses the growth, migration, and invasion of lung adenocarcinoma cells by targeting carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 6
AbstractCarcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule 6 (CEACAM6) is an important regulator of cell adhesion, invasion, and metastasis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional roles of CEACAM6 in lung adenocarcinoma and to identify miRNAs that inhibit the growth, migration, and invasion of lung adenocarcinoma cells by targeting CEACAM6. CEACAM6 expression is associated with poor prognosis of patients with lung adenocarcinoma, and CEACAM6 has important functional roles in controlling the growth, migration, and invasion of lung adenocarcinoma cells in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, miR-29a can suppress the growth, migration, and invasion of lung adenocarcinoma cells by targeting CEACAM6. Therefore, miR-29a/CEACAM6 axis represents a potential therapeutic target for treatment of lung adenocarcinoma
Changes in brain activity in response to problem solving during the abstinence from online game play
Background and aims: Several studies have suggested that addictive disorders including substance abuse and pathologic gambling might be associated with dysfunction on working memory and prefrontal activity. We hypothesized that excessive online game playing is associated with deficits in prefrontal cortex function and that recovery from excessive online game playing might improve prefrontal cortical activation in response to working memory stimulation. Methods: Thirteen adolescents with excessive online game playing (AEOP) and ten healthy adolescents (HC) agreed to participate in this study. The severity of online game play and playing time were evaluated for a baseline measurement and again following four weeks of treatment. Brain activation in response to working memory tasks (simple and complex calculations) at baseline and subsequent measurements was assessed using BOLD functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Results: Compared to the HC subjects, the AEOP participants exhibited significantly greater activity in the right middle occipital gyrus, left cerebellum posterior lobe, left premotor cortex and left middle temporal gyrus in response to working memory tasks during baseline measurements. After four weeks of treatment, the AEOP subjects showed increased activity within the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and left occipital fusiform gyrus. After four weeks of treatment, changes in the severity of online game playing were negatively correlated with changes in the mean β value of the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in response to complex stimulation. Conclusions: We suggest that the effects of online game addiction on working memory may be similar to those observed in patients with substance dependence
The Effects of Engaging and Affective Behaviors of Virtual Agents in Group Decision-Making
Virtual agents (VAs) need to exhibit engaged and affective behavior in order
to become more effective social actors in our daily lives. However, such
behaviors need to conform to social norms, especially in organizational
settings. This study examines how different VA behaviors influence subjects'
perceptions and actions in group decision-making processes. Participants
exposed to VAs demonstrated varying levels of engagement and affective behavior
during the group discussions. Engagement refers to the VA's focus on the group
task, while affective behavior represents the VA's emotional state. The
findings indicate that VA engagement positively influences user behavior,
particularly in attention allocation. However, it has minimal impact on
subjective perception. Conversely, affective expressions of VAs have a negative
impact on subjective perceptions, such as social presence, social influence,
and trustworthiness. Interestingly, in 64 discussions for tasks, only seven
showed a decline in group scores compared to individual scores, and in six of
these cases, the VA exhibited a non-engaged and affective state. We discuss the
results and the potential implications for future research on using VAs in
group meetings. It provides valuable insights for improving VA behavior as a
team member in group decision-making scenarios and guides VA design in
organizational contexts.Comment: Under Review. This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible

RECIPE4U: Student-ChatGPT Interaction Dataset in EFL Writing Education
The integration of generative AI in education is expanding, yet empirical
analyses of large-scale and real-world interactions between students and AI
systems still remain limited. Addressing this gap, we present RECIPE4U (RECIPE
for University), a dataset sourced from a semester-long experiment with 212
college students in English as Foreign Language (EFL) writing courses. During
the study, students engaged in dialogues with ChatGPT to revise their essays.
RECIPE4U includes comprehensive records of these interactions, including
conversation logs, students' intent, students' self-rated satisfaction, and
students' essay edit histories. In particular, we annotate the students'
utterances in RECIPE4U with 13 intention labels based on our coding schemes. We
establish baseline results for two subtasks in task-oriented dialogue systems
within educational contexts: intent detection and satisfaction estimation. As a
foundational step, we explore student-ChatGPT interaction patterns through
RECIPE4U and analyze them by focusing on students' dialogue, essay data
statistics, and students' essay edits. We further illustrate potential
applications of RECIPE4U dataset for enhancing the incorporation of LLMs in
educational frameworks. RECIPE4U is publicly available at

ChEDDAR: Student-ChatGPT Dialogue in EFL Writing Education
The integration of generative AI in education is expanding, yet empirical
analyses of large-scale, real-world interactions between students and AI
systems still remain limited. In this study, we present ChEDDAR, ChatGPT & EFL
Learner's Dialogue Dataset As Revising an essay, which is collected from a
semester-long longitudinal experiment involving 212 college students enrolled
in English as Foreign Langauge (EFL) writing courses. The students were asked
to revise their essays through dialogues with ChatGPT. ChEDDAR includes a
conversation log, utterance-level essay edit history, self-rated satisfaction,
and students' intent, in addition to session-level pre-and-post surveys
documenting their objectives and overall experiences. We analyze students'
usage patterns and perceptions regarding generative AI with respect to their
intent and satisfaction. As a foundational step, we establish baseline results
for two pivotal tasks in task-oriented dialogue systems within educational
contexts: intent detection and satisfaction estimation. We finally suggest
further research to refine the integration of generative AI into education
settings, outlining potential scenarios utilizing ChEDDAR. ChEDDAR is publicly
available at https://github.com/zeunie/ChEDDAR
Socioeconomic Deprivation and the Risk of Sight-Threatening Diabetic Retinopathy (STDR):A Population-Based Cohort Study in the U.K.
OBJECTIVETo evaluate the associations between socioeconomic deprivation and sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy (STDR) in individuals with type 1 (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D).RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODSData from 175,628 individuals with diabetes in the Health Improvement Network were used to assess the risk of STDR across Townsend Deprivation Index quantiles using Cox proportional hazard regression.RESULTSAmong individuals with T1D, the risk of STDR was three times higher (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] 2.67, 95% CI 1.05–7.78) in the most deprived quintile compared with the least deprived quintile. In T2D, the most deprived quintile had a 28% higher risk (aHR 1.28; 95% CI 1.15–1.43) than the least deprived quintile.CONCLUSIONSIncreasing socioeconomic deprivation is associated with a higher risk of developing STDR in people with diabetes. This underscores persistent health disparities linked to poverty, even within a country offering free universal health care. Further research is needed to address health equity concerns in socioeconomically deprived regions
RECIPE: How to Integrate ChatGPT into EFL Writing Education
The integration of generative AI in the field of education is actively being
explored. In particular, ChatGPT has garnered significant interest, offering an
opportunity to examine its effectiveness in English as a foreign language (EFL)
education. To address this need, we present a novel learning platform called
RECIPE (Revising an Essay with ChatGPT on an Interactive Platform for EFL
learners). Our platform features two types of prompts that facilitate
conversations between ChatGPT and students: (1) a hidden prompt for ChatGPT to
take an EFL teacher role and (2) an open prompt for students to initiate a
dialogue with a self-written summary of what they have learned. We deployed
this platform for 213 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in EFL
writing courses and seven instructors. For this study, we collect students'
interaction data from RECIPE, including students' perceptions and usage of the
platform, and user scenarios are examined with the data. We also conduct a
focus group interview with six students and an individual interview with one
EFL instructor to explore design opportunities for leveraging generative AI
models in the field of EFL education
iCSDB: an integrated database of CRISPR screens.
High-throughput screening based on CRISPR-Cas9 libraries has become an attractive and powerful technique to identify target genes for functional studies. However, accessibility of public data is limited due to the lack of user-friendly utilities and up-to-date resources covering experiments from third parties. Here, we describe iCSDB, an integrated database of CRISPR screening experiments using human cell lines. We compiled two major sources of CRISPR-Cas9 screening: the DepMap portal and BioGRID ORCS. DepMap portal itself is an integrated database that includes three large-scale projects of CRISPR screening. We additionally aggregated CRISPR screens from BioGRID ORCS that is a collection of screening results from PubMed articles. Currently, iCSDB contains 1375 genome-wide screens across 976 human cell lines, covering 28 tissues and 70 cancer types. Importantly, the batch effects from different CRISPR libraries were removed and the screening scores were converted into a single metric to estimate the knockout efficiency. Clinical and molecular information were also integrated to help users to select cell lines of interest readily. Furthermore, we have implemented various interactive tools and viewers to facilitate users to choose, examine and compare the screen results both at the gene and guide RNA levels. iCSDB is available at https://www.kobic.re.kr/icsdb/
