    Van der Waals black holes in rainbow gravity

    Recently, Rajagapol et al presented an asymptotically AdS black hole metric whose thermodynamics qualitatively mimics the behavior of the Van der Waals fluid by treating the cosmological constant as a thermodynamic pressure. In some studies in the literature, authors have discussed the effects of deformed algebras such as generalized and extended uncertainty principles on the thermal quantities of these black holes. In this manuscript, we considered another deformation, the rainbow gravity formalism, and we investigated its impact on the Van der Waal black hole thermodynamics. To this end, we first generated the modified lapse and mass functions, and then we derived the modified thermal quantities such as thermodynamic volume, Hawking temperature, entropy, and specific heat functions. Finally, we explored the thermodynamics of a black hole, which mimics the thermodynamics of an ideal gas, under the influence of the rainbow gravity formalism.Comment: 7 figures, 16 page

    Extended uncertainty principle and Van der Waals black holes

    In this manuscript, we investigate the extended uncertainty principle (EUP) effects on the Van der Waals (VdW) black holes whose thermal quantities mimic the VdW liquid. We find that the considered formalism imposes an upper bound on the event horizon radius. Thus, the mass, Hawking temperature, and heat capacity become physically meaningful within a certain range of event horizon radii. At a large event horizon radius the black hole has a remnant. Whether the VdW black hole is stable or not depends on the black hole parameters.Comment: 13 pages, 10 figure

    Pharmacokinetics of intravenous and subcutaneous cefovecin in alpacas

    The purpose of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of cefovecin after intravenous and subcutaneous dose of 8 mg/kg to alpacas. Bacterial infections requiring long‐term antibiotic therapy such as neonatal bacteremia, pneumonia, peritonitis, dental, and uterine infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in this species. However, few antimicrobials have been evaluated and proven to have favorable pharmacokinetics for therapeutic use. Most antimicrobials that are currently used require daily injections for many days. Cefovecin is a long‐acting cephalosporin that is formulated for subcutaneous administration, and its long‐elimination half‐life allows for 14‐day dosing intervals in dogs and cats. The properties of cefovecin may be advantageous for medical treatment of camelids due to its broad spectrum, route of administration, and long duration of activity. Pharmacokinetic evaluation of antimicrobial drugs in camelids is essential for the proper treatment and prevention of bacterial disease, and to minimize development of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains due to inadequate antibiotic concentrations. Cefovecin mean half‐life, volume of distribution at steady‐state, and clearance after intravenous administration were 10.3 h, 86 mL/kg, and 7.07 mL·h/kg. The bioavailability was 143%, while half‐life, Cmax, and Tmax were 16.9 h, 108 ÎŒg/mL, and 2.8 h following subcutaneous administration. In the absence of additional microbial susceptibility data for alpaca pathogens, the current cefovecin dosage regimen prescribed for dogs (8 mg/kg SC every 14 days) may need to be optimized for the treatment of infections in this species

    Detection and localization of speech in the presence of competing speech signals

    Presented at the 12th International Conference on Auditory Display (ICAD), London, UK, June 20-23, 2006.Auditory displays are often used to convey important information in complex operational environments. One problem with these displays is that potentially critical information can be corrupted or lost when multiple warning sounds are presented at the same time. In this experiment, we examined a listener's ability to detect and localize a target speech token in the presence of from 1 to 5 simultaneous competing speech tokens. Two conditions were examined: a condition in which all of the speech tokens were presented from the same location (the `co-located' condition) and a condition in which the speech tokens were presented from different random locations (the `spatially separated' condition). The results suggest that both detection and localization degrade as the number of competing sounds increases. However, the changes in detection performance were found to be surprisingly small and there appeared to be little or no benefit of spatial separation for detection. Localization, on the other hand, was found to degrade substantially and systematically as the number of competing speech tokens increased. Overall, these results suggest that listeners are able to extract substantial information from these speech tokens even when the target is presented with 5 competing simultaneous sounds

    Image rights, broadly defined as the commercial appropriation of someone's personality, including indices of their image, voice, name and signature, have become increasingly important in the political economy of media sport. A range of legal, economic and political arguments have developed in the UK as to what image rights actually are, their legal efficacy and their potential impact on developments in the long-standing relationship between sport and the media. This paper focuses on the problematic definition of the term in the UK context and how it relates to certain economic and commercial transformations in British football. Using the English Premier League and the ‘celebrity footballer’ David Beckham as its primary focus, the paper traces the rise of image rights clauses in player contracts. This process is analysed in the context of rapid and dramatic change in the media coverage of the sport. The paper focuses on the growing legal complexities of protecting star images in relation to the Internet and the wider issues of football, fandom and popular culture

    Towards a model for measuring holistic performance of professional Football clubs

    This paper introduces an experimental model to measure the holistic performance of professional football clubs. The model utilizes a selection of established financial and sporting indicators, which are weighted in accordance with their perceived relative importance and in relation to components of financial management and governing body regulations. The paper uses data pertaining to clubs competing in the English Premier League to demonstrate the outputs of the model. The authors argue that although the model is experimental, it still provides a useful platform to analyse performance of football clubs through further scientific investigation

    Interacting Proteins on Human Spermatozoa: Adaptive Evolution of the Binding of Semenogelin I to EPPIN

    Semenogelin I (SEMG1) is found in human semen coagulum and on the surface of spermatozoa bound to EPPIN. The physiological significance of the SEMG1/EPPIN interaction on the surface of spermatozoa is its capacity to modulate sperm progressive motility. The present study investigates the hypothesis that the interacting surface of SEMG1 and EPPIN co-evolved within the Hominoidea time scale, as a result of adaptive pressures applied by their roles in sperm protection and reproductive fitness. Our results indicate that some amino acid residues of SEMG1 and EPPIN possess a remarkable deficiency of variation among hominoid primates. We observe a distinct residue change unique to humans within the EPPIN sequence containing a SEMG1 interacting surface, namely His92. In addition, Bayes Empirical Bayes analysis for positive selection indicates that the SEMG1 Cys239 residue underwent positive selection in humans, probably as a consequence of its role in increasing the binding affinity of these interacting proteins. We confirm the critical role of Cys239 residue for SEMG1 binding to EPPIN and inhibition of sperm motility by showing that recombinant SEMG1 mutants in which Cys239 residue was changed to glycine, aspartic acid, histidine, serine or arginine have reduced capacity to interact to EPPIN and to inhibit human sperm motility in vitro. In conclusion, our results indicate that EPPIN and SEMG1 rapidly co-evolved in primates due to their critical role in the modulation of sperm motility in the semen coagulum, providing unique insights into the molecular co-evolution of sperm surface interacting proteins
