The algebra of adjacency patterns: Rees matrix semigroups with reversion
We establish a surprisingly close relationship between universal Horn classes
of directed graphs and varieties generated by so-called adjacency semigroups
which are Rees matrix semigroups over the trivial group with the unary
operation of reversion. In particular, the lattice of subvarieties of the
variety generated by adjacency semigroups that are regular unary semigroups is
essentially the same as the lattice of universal Horn classes of reflexive
directed graphs. A number of examples follow, including a limit variety of
regular unary semigroups and finite unary semigroups with NP-hard variety

A Brownian particle in a microscopic periodic potential
We study a model for a massive test particle in a microscopic periodic
potential and interacting with a reservoir of light particles. In the regime
considered, the fluctuations in the test particle's momentum resulting from
collisions typically outweigh the shifts in momentum generated by the periodic
force, and so the force is effectively a perturbative contribution. The
mathematical starting point is an idealized reduced dynamics for the test
particle given by a linear Boltzmann equation. In the limit that the mass ratio
of a single reservoir particle to the test particle tends to zero, we show that
there is convergence to the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process under the standard
normalizations for the test particle variables. Our analysis is primarily
directed towards bounding the perturbative effect of the periodic potential on

Effective theory for wall-antiwall system
We propose a useful method for deriving the effective theory for a system
where BPS and anti-BPS domain walls coexist. Our method respects an
approximately preserved SUSY near each wall. Due to the finite width of the
walls, SUSY breaking terms arise at tree-level, which are exponentially
suppressed. A practical approximation using the BPS wall solutions is also
discussed. We show that a tachyonic mode appears in the matter sector if the

Constituting monetary conservatives via the 'savings habit': New Labour and the British housing market bubble
The ongoing world credit crunch might well kill off the most recent bubble dynamics in the British housing market by driving prices systematically downwards from their 2007 peak. Nonetheless, the experience of that bubble still warrants analytical attention. The Labour Government might not have been responsible for consciously creating it, but it has certainly grasped the opportunities the bubble has provided in an attempt to enforce a process of agential change at the heart of the British economy. The key issue in this respect is the way in which the Government has challenged the legitimacy of passive welfare receipts in favour of establishing a welfare system based on incorporating the individual into an active asset-holding society. The housing market has taken on new political significance as a means for individuals first to acquire assets and then to accumulate wealth on the back of asset ownership. The ensuing integration of the housing market into an increasingly reconfigured welfare system has permeated into the politics of everyday life. It has been consistent with individuals remaking their political subjectivities in line with preferences for the type of conservative monetary policies that typically keep house price bubbles inflated

Post-harvest innovations in innovation: reflections on partnership and learning
In the post-harvest area and in agriculture research in general, both in India and
internationally, policy attention is returning to the question of how innovation can be
encouraged and promoted and thus how impact on the poor can be achieved. This
publication assembles several cases from the post-harvest sector. These provide examples
of successful innovation that emerged in quite different ways. Its purpose is to illustrate
and analyze the diversity and often highly context-specific nature of the processes that
lead to and promote innovation. The presented cases suggest a number of generic principles
needed to develop the capacity of innovation systems: the need to pay more attention to
revealing and managing the historical and institutional context of partnerships and
relationship; the need to build on local contexts and circumstance rather than introducing
external blueprints; and the need to strengthen the learning process and to link this to
the broader agenda of institutional change, particularly concerning the governance of
public science endeavors
Superfluid to solid crossover in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensed gas
The properties of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a prolate
cylindrically symmetric trap are explored both analytically and numerically. As
the rotation frequency increases, an ever greater number of vortices are
energetically favored. Though the cloud anisotropy and moment of inertia
approach those of a classical fluid at high frequencies, the observed vortex
density is consistently lower than the solid-body estimate. Furthermore, the
vortices are found to arrange themselves in highly regular triangular arrays,
with little distortion even near the condensate surface. These results are
