Determination of hydroxyl content in impure magnesium oxide
Three-step thermal process quantitatively determines the hydroxyl content in samples of magnesium oxide. Analytical method can be adapted to large-scale production of hydroxyl-free magnesium oxide
Closed-form sums for some perturbation series involving associated Laguerre polynomials
Infinite series sum_{n=1}^infty {(alpha/2)_n / (n n!)}_1F_1(-n, gamma, x^2),
where_1F_1(-n, gamma, x^2)={n!_(gamma)_n}L_n^(gamma-1)(x^2), appear in the
first-order perturbation correction for the wavefunction of the generalized
spiked harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian H = -d^2/dx^2 + B x^2 + A/x^2 +
lambda/x^alpha 0 0, A >= 0. It is proved that the
series is convergent for all x > 0 and 2 gamma > alpha, where gamma = 1 +
(1/2)sqrt(1+4A). Closed-form sums are presented for these series for the cases
alpha = 2, 4, and 6. A general formula for finding the sum for alpha/2 = 2 + m,
m = 0,1,2, ..., in terms of associated Laguerre polynomials, is also provided.Comment: 16 page
Airborne HCl - CO sensing system
A system for measuring air pollutants in-situ using an aircraft was designed, fabricated, and tested. The system is based upon a technique called Gas Filter Correlation (GFC) which provides for high sensitivity and specificity in the presence of interfering species. This particular system was designed for measuring hydrochloric acid and carbon monoxide gases emitted from rocket exhaust effluents
A Physical Axiomatic Approach to Schrodinger's Equation
The Schrodinger equation for non-relativistic quantum systems is derived from
some classical physics axioms within an ensemble hamiltonian framework. Such an
approach enables one to understand the structure of the equation, in particular
its linearity, in intuitive terms. Furthermore it allows for a physically
motivated and systematic investigation of potential generalisations which are
briefly discussed.Comment: Extended version. 14 page
Discovery of hydroxyl and water masers in R Aquarii and H1-36 Arae
We present the first results from an all-sky maser-line survey of symbiotic
Miras. Interferometric spectral-line observations of R Aqr and H1-36 Arae have
revealed a 22-GHz water maser in the former and 1612-MHz hydroxyl and weak
22-GHz water maser emission from the latter. H1-36 has thus become the first
known symbiotic OH/IR star. We have also detected weak OH line emission from
the vicinity of R Aqr, but we note that there are small discrepencies between
the OH- and H2O-line velocities and positions. These detections demonstrate
unequivocally that dust can shield some circumstellar hydroxyl and water
molecules from dissociation, even in systems which possess intense local
sources of UV. Finally, we discuss some of the implications of these
observations. The narrow profile of the water maser in R Aqr means that there
may finally be an opportunity to determine the system's orbital parameters. We
also point out that high resolution synthesis observations may trace the
distribution of dust in H1-36 and R Aqr, possibly throwing light on the
mass-loss process in symbiotic Miras and placing constraints on the amount of
collimation experienced by UV radiation from their hot, compact companions.Comment: 7 pages; no figures attached; LaTex (MN style); postscript figures

Semirelativistic stability of N-boson systems bound by 1/r pair potentials
We analyze a system of self-gravitating identical bosons by means of a
semirelativistic Hamiltonian comprising the relativistic kinetic energies of
the involved particles and added (instantaneous) Newtonian gravitational pair
potentials. With the help of an improved lower bound to the bottom of the
spectrum of this Hamiltonian, we are able to enlarge the known region for
relativistic stability for such boson systems against gravitational collapse
and to sharpen the predictions for their maximum stable mass.Comment: 11 pages, considerably enlarged introduction and motivation,

2MASS 1315-2649: A High Proper Motion L Dwarf with Strong H-alpha Emission
In Hall (2002) I reported that 2MASSI J1315309-264951 is an L dwarf with
strong H-alpha emission. Two spectroscopic epochs appeared to show that the
H-alpha was variable, decreasing from 121 Angstroms to 25 Angstroms EW, which I
interpreted as a flare during the first observation. Gizis (2002) independently
discovered this object, and his intermediate spectroscopic epoch shows H-alpha
with 97 Angstroms EW. A new fourth epoch of spectroscopy again shows a very
large H-alpha EW (124 Angstroms), confirming this object to be a persistent,
strong H-alpha emitter. Whether the H-alpha is steady (like 2MASS 1237+6526) or
from continuous strong flaring (like PC0025+0447) remains unclear. Imaging
confirms that 2MASS 1315-2649 has a high proper motion (0.71"/year),
corresponding to a transverse velocity of ~76 km/s at its distance of ~23 pc.
Thus 2MASS 1315-2649 is consistent with being >~2 Gyr old and therefore
relatively massive. If that is so, the correlation of H-alph activity with mass
found by Gizis et al. (2000) would seem to support the continuous strong
flaring scenario, though it does not rule out a brown dwarf binary accretion
scenario.Comment: 2 pages, ApJL accepte
Asymptotic iteration method for eigenvalue problems
An asymptotic interation method for solving second-order homogeneous linear
differential equations of the form y'' = lambda(x) y' + s(x) y is introduced,
where lambda(x) \neq 0 and s(x) are C-infinity functions. Applications to
Schroedinger type problems, including some with highly singular potentials, are
presented.Comment: 14 page
Perturbation expansions for a class of singular potentials
Harrell's modified perturbation theory [Ann. Phys. 105, 379-406 (1977)] is
applied and extended to obtain non-power perturbation expansions for a class of
singular Hamiltonians H = -D^2 + x^2 + A/x^2 + lambda/x^alpha, (A\geq 0, alpha
> 2), known as generalized spiked harmonic oscillators. The perturbation
expansions developed here are valid for small values of the coupling lambda >
0, and they extend the results which Harrell obtained for the spiked harmonic
oscillator A = 0. Formulas for the the excited-states are also developed.Comment: 23 page
