    The call to interfaith dialogue

    The paper explores the contemporary call to interfaith dialogue from the Christian – especially Roman Catholic – perspective. Although there is focus on dialogue among the Abrahamic traditions, some attention is given to dialogue with indigenous and secular humanist traditions. The paper proposes various theological bases for dialogue in Vatican II and subsequent Church teachings, and in newer theologies which focus on the role of the Trinity and the Holy Spirit. Some attention is given to the insights of Raimon Panikkar including his emphasis on intra-religious dialogue and a spirituality for dialogue. Various levels of dialogue – life, action, theology and religious experience – are discussed along with other practical aspects of dialogue. Challenges and promises of interfaith dialogue are explored in the Australian context with emphasis on its possible contribution to tolerance, reconciliation and the transformation of culture

    John Thornhill: Theologian of the church

    This is written in tribute to Marist theologian, John Thornhill, in recognition of his contribution to theology and theological education in Australia. Specific references are made to John's article in the Journal, One Theologian's Personal Journey. It begins by outlining distinct habits of mind that inform John's approach to theology: philosophical realism; historical consciousness; and the original experience of the Gospel. This provides John with a theological template for interpreting the complex relationship between human history and divine revelation. Influences in John's theological project are then discussed under the self-explanatory headings of Marist, Vatican II, Ecumenism and Australian. Finally, it is proposed that John is first and foremost a theologian of the Church

    Inter-or intra-religious dialogue?

    This paper was originally presented at the Fethullah Gülen Conference, St Patricks Melbourne Campus, ACU, 15th-16th July 2009 and revised as Conversation on Inter-religious Dialogue for the Gold Coast Sea of Faith Public Lecture, 1st November 2009. It examines obstacles to dialogue especially between Christians and Muslims. Such obstacles arise from doctrinal differences as well as historical, cultural and political complexities. If interreligious dialogue is to succeed, it must not only deal with doctrinal issues, but create the circumstances in which people of diverse religious traditions may come to understanding (not necessarily agreement). For this, Raimon Panikkar suggests that a different kind of hermeneutic what he calls diatopical hermeneutics is required. Elements of this type of religious encounter include humility, empathy and hospitality or what Panikkar calls intra-religious dialogue. These are examined in relation to Islamic-Christian dialogue

    Exact equations for smoothed Wigner transforms and homogenization of wave propagation

    The Wigner Transform (WT) has been extensively used in the formulation of phase-space models for a variety of wave propagation problems including high-frequency limits, nonlinear and random waves. It is well known that the WT features counterintuitive 'interference terms', which often make computation impractical. In this connection, we propose the use of the smoothed Wigner Transform (SWT), and derive new, exact equations for it, covering a broad class of wave propagation problems. Equations for spectrograms are included as a special case. The 'taming' of the interference terms by the SWT is illustrated, and an asymptotic model for the Schroedinger equation is constructed and numerically verified.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figure

    Whilst there has been much mention in the literature recently concerning the development of hypermedia systems, there is very little reported work on projects to assess their effectiveness, or otherwise, in education. This paper reports on a project currently underway at the University of Southampton in the UK to develop a hypertext interface for an interactive videodisc application in biology education, and to undertake a thorough evaluation of the resulting system as used by undergraduate students at the University. The system is currently based on Apple's Hypercard and uses existing videodisc material.     We consider supersymmetric extensions of the standard model with general non-universal soft breaking terms. We analyse in a model-independent way the constraints on these terms at the electroweak energy scale coming from gluino mediated flavour (F) changing neutral current and CP-violating processes. We have computed the complete ΔF=1\Delta F=1 and ΔF=2\Delta F=2 effective hamiltonian for gluino mediated processes, including for the first time the effect of box diagrams in the evaluation of ϵ′/ϵ\epsilon^{\prime}/\epsilon. We present numerical results for the constraints on these non-universal soft breaking terms for different values of the parameters, extending the analysis also to the leptonic sector.     Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 3: Issue 1, Article 11, 2022. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) methods estimate health parameters such as phase angle (PhA) and body fat percentage (%BF) from various positional and electrode configurations. PhA and %BF are known biological markers of cellular and physical health, respectively, and can be used to predict various health-related conditions and therefore require accurate assessment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of body position during BIA by investigating the difference and agreement between PhA and %BF using RJL (supine) and InBody (vertical) analyzers. Thirty-eight young adults (23.4±4.1 yrs.) volunteered and underwent body composition assessments by both analyzers. Difference and agreement in assessments of PhA and %BF between analyzers were assessed using paired samples t-tests and Lin’s concordance correlation coefficient (rc), respectively. RJL’s PhA (7.15±0.84°) exceeded InBody’s (6.11±0.74°), p\u3c0.001, and had poor agreement (rc =0.47). RJL’s %BF (23.0±6.8%) was similar to InBody’s (23.1±7.4%), p=0.813, and had substantial agreement (rc =0.95). Both analyzers estimated %BF similarly and may be interchangeable for this purpose, thus demonstrating no effect of body position on the estimation of %BF with these BIA devices. An individual\u27s PhA may be underestimated if measured in the vertical position and compared to supine reference values. Current reference values for PhA are based on measurements in the supine position, so until vertical reference values of PhA are available, caution is urged when interpreting PhA from vertical BIA assessments
