    In the past few years, several computer codes have been written for the purpose of analyzing transient recovery and quench in internally-cooled cable-in-conduit superconductors (ICCS). These codes all include a transient, compressible helium flow model. They differ in the dimensionality'' of the models, ranging from one- to three-dimensional finite element modeling of thermal conduction. The code used in this study, Wong's CICC, is a 1-{1/2} D code that models thermal conduction through the insulation of an individual conduit. Until recently, the calibration of CICC was restricted to measurements of helium expulsion in normal conductor. No actual quenches in ICCS coils had been simulated. In the past year, several experiments on ICCS conductors of differing topology have been performed and compared with CICC simulations, with varying success. This paper reports on the capability of CICC to predict and analyze ICCS recovery and quench, and on the code's limitations and need for further improvements

    Histopathological diagnoses on pleural biopsy specimens over a 15-year period at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Johannesburg, South Africa: A retrospective review

    Background. Pleural effusions are a common reason for presentation to healthcare facilities. Blind closed pleural biopsy can be a useful tool to diagnose their cause, especially in resource-limited settings.Objectives. To determine the aetiology, frequency and change in profile of histopathological diagnoses made at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH), Johannesburg, South Africa, over the period 1 January 2001 - 31 December 2015.Methods. Pleural biopsies performed at CHBAH and analysed by  histopathologists from the National Health Laboratory Service at the hospital over the study period were retrospectively reviewed by accessing reports from two databases (DISA and TrakCare). The subjects’ ages, genders, HIV status and histopathological diagnoses as well as adenosine deaminase and Ziehl-Neelsen results were recorded.Results. A total of 1 013 samples were included in the study, with 780 considered adequate for assessment. The most common diagnosis was granulomatous inflammation (48.1%, n=375), with the most common type being necrotising granulomatous inflammation (73.6%, n=276). Ten percent of biopsies (n=78) showed malignancy, most commonly  adenocarcinoma, with 46.2% (n=36) metastatic and 23.1% (n=18) primary lung adenocarcinoma. The odds of being diagnosed with malignancy  showed increasing statistical significance above the age of 40 years: 40 - 49 years odds ratio (OR) 8.7, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1 - 66.9 (p=0.038); 50 - 59 years OR 12.4, 95% CI 1.6 - 95.0 (p=0.015); ≥60 years OR 23.0, 95% CI 3.1 - 171.3 (p=0.002). HIV seropositivity was associated with lower odds of being diagnosed with malignancy compared with HIV-negative patients (OR 0.5, 95% CI 0.2 - 0.9; p=0.040), with greater odds of a ‘non-cancer’ diagnosis in HIV positive patients (including granulomatous inflammation and pleuritis (OR 2.16, 95% CI 1.03 - 4.51; p=0.040)).Conclusions. Blind closed pleural biopsy has a role to play in the diagnosis of exudative pleural effusions in resource-limited settings, particularly for patients suspected to have tuberculosis (TB) or malignancy. TB remains a common cause of exudative pleural effusions. Patients aged >40 years presenting with an exudative pleural effusion should routinely have pleural biopsy performed. However, this study showed a high  frequency of   inadequate specimens from closed pleural biopsy. Training in the   performance of this procedure to increase diagnostic rates is   recommended

    Non-ideality of quantum operations with the electron spin of a 31P donor in a Si crystal due to interaction with a nuclear spin system

    We examine a 31P donor electron spin in a Si crystal to be used for the purposes of quantum computation. The interaction with an uncontrolled system of 29Si nuclear spins influences the electron spin dynamics appreciably. The hyperfine field at the 29Si nuclei positions is non-collinear with the external magnetic field. Quantum operations with the electron wave function, i.e. using magnetic field pulses or electrical gates, change the orientation of hyperfine field and disturb the nuclear spin system. This disturbance produces a deviation of the electron spin qubit from an ideal state, at a short time scale in comparison with the nuclear spin diffusion time. For H_ext=9 T, the estimated error rate is comparable to the threshold value required by the quantum error correction algorithms. The rate is lower at higher external magnetic fields.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

    Strand bond performance in prestressed concrete accounting for bondslip

    This paper presents the results of an experimental research program addressing the bond behavior of prestressing strands in pretensioned prestressed concrete members after anchorage failure has occurred. A test methodology based on measuring the prestressing strand force and strand end slip at the specimens free end was employed. Transmission- and anchorage-length tests were performed on several series of prestressed specimens with different embedment lengths using twelve concrete mixes. Average bond stresses along the transmission length and the anchorage length were obtained for specimens with release strengths ranging from 24 MPa to 55 MPa. For the anchorage analysis, a parameter was developed that includes strand slip to be used in determining anchorage length. Based on the test results, an analysis to experimentally substantiate the Stress Waves Theory of Janney has been proposed. Additionally, the potential bond performance of prestressing strands after anchorage failure at the end regions has been suggested.The content of the present paper is based on tests which were conducted in the Institute of Concrete Science and Technology (ICITECH), at Universitat Politecnica of Valencia (Spain), in collaboration with the companies PREVALESA and ISOCRON.     The 22-Year Hale Cycle in cosmic ray flux: evidence for direct heliospheric modulation

    The ability to predict times of greater galactic cosmic ray (GCR) fluxes is important for reducing the hazards caused by these particles to satellite communications, aviation, or astronauts. The 11-year solar-cycle variation in cosmic rays is highly correlated with the strength of the heliospheric magnetic field. Differences in GCR flux during alternate solar cycles yield a 22-year cycle, known as the Hale Cycle, which is thought to be due to different particle drift patterns when the northern solar pole has predominantly positive (denoted as qA>0 cycle) or negative (qA0 cycles than for qA0 and more sharply peaked for qA0 solar cycles, when the difference in GCR flux is most apparent. This suggests that particle drifts may not be the sole mechanism responsible for the Hale Cycle in GCR flux at Earth. However, we also demonstrate that these polarity-dependent heliospheric differences are evident during the space-age but are much less clear in earlier data: using geomagnetic reconstructions, we show that for the period of 1905 - 1965, alternate polarities do not give as significant a difference during the declining phase of the solar cycle. Thus we suggest that the 22-year cycle in cosmic-ray flux is at least partly the result of direct modulation by the heliospheric magnetic field and that this effect may be primarily limited to the grand solar maximum of the space-age
