Hybrid energy storage system control analogous to power quality enhancement operation of interlinking converters

    Get PDF
Increasing nonlinear loads and power electronic converters lead to various power quality issues in microgrids (MGs). The interlinking converters (ILCs) can participate in these systems to harmonic control and power quality enhancement. However, ILC participation deteriorates the dc link voltage, system stability, and storage lifetime due to oscillatory current phenomena. To address these problems, a new control strategy for a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) is proposed to eliminate the adverse effects of the harmonic control operation of ILC. Specifically, battery and super-capacitor (SC) are used as HESSs that provide low and high power frequency load, respectively. The proposed strategy tries to compensate the current oscillation imposed by ILC with fuzzy control of HESS. In this method, a proportional-resonant (PR) controller integrated with harmonic compensator (HC) is employed to control the ILC for power quality enhancement and oscillatory current elimination. The main advantages of the proposed strategy are to reduce DGs power fluctuations, precise DC bus voltage regulation for generation and load disturbances, improved grid power quality under nonlinear load and transition conditions. The performance of the proposed method for isolated and grid-connected modes is verified using simulation studies in the MATLAB software environment

Optimal Sensorless Four Switch Direct Power Control of BLDC Motor

Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are used in a wide range of applications due to their high efficiency and high power density. In this paper, sensorless four-switch direct power control (DPC) method with the sector to sector commutations ripple minimization for BLDC motor control is proposed. The main features of the proposed DPC method are: (1) fast dynamic response (2) easy implementation (3) use of power feedback for motor control that is much easy to implement (4) eliminating the torque dips during sector-to sector commutations. For controlling the motor speed, a position sensorless method is used enhancing drive reliability. For reference speed tracking, a PI control is also designed and tuned based on imperialist competition algorithm (ICA) that reduces reference tracking error. The feasibility of the proposed control method is developed and analyzed by MATLAB/SIMULINK®. Simulation results prove high performance exhibited by the proposed DPC strategy

A New Approach for Transformer Interturn Faults Detection Using Vibration Frequency Analysis

    No full text
Interturn fault detection is a challenging issue in power transformer protection. In this paper, interturn faults of distribution transformer are studied and a new online detection method based on vibration analysis is proposed. Transformer electromagnetic forces are analyzed by time stepping finite element (TSFE) modeling of interturn fault. Since the vibration associated with inter-turn faults is caused by electromagnetic forces, axial and radial electromagnetic forces for various interturn faults are studied. Transformer winding vibration under interturn faults is studied through an equivalent mathematical model combined with electromagnetic force analysis. The results show that it is feasible to predict the interturn winding faults of transformer windings with the transformer vibration analysis method. Simulation and experimentation studies are carried out on 20/0.4 kV, 50 kVA distribution transformer. The results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method

Energy management on battery/ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage system based on adjustable bandwidth filter and sliding-mode control

    No full text
A real-time power-split control strategy for a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) used in electric vehicles is proposed in this work. The HESS topology corresponds to a semi-active ultracapacitor (UC) configuration. The HESS goals are to prevent battery degradation and to preserve its lifetime while improving the system efficiency by supplying the fast dynamics power demands through the UC pack. In order to generate the UC power reference, a digital low-pass filter whose bandwidth is adjusted according to the UC SOC is proposed. This allows a better usage of the UC available energy, while reducing frequent activation of controller protections and avoiding the calculation of the filter cut-off frequency for a certain driving cycle. The low-level control strategy is based on a sliding mode controller combined with a closed-loop current observer, which allows to improve the implementation performance while maintaining the current ripple bounded. Simulation and experimental results were presented showing that the proposed strategy preserves battery health in a more effective way than filter-based strategies with fixed bandwidth, for cases where no future information about the required power is available.Fil: Asensio, Eduardo Maximiliano.
