    Constant Sequence Extension for Fast Search Using Weighted Hamming Distance

    Representing visual data using compact binary codes is attracting increasing attention as binary codes are used as direct indices into hash table(s) for fast non-exhaustive search. Recent methods show that ranking binary codes using weighted Hamming distance (WHD) rather than Hamming distance (HD) by generating query-adaptive weights for each bit can better retrieve query-related items. However, search using WHD is slower than that using HD. One main challenge is that the complexity of extending a monotone increasing sequence using WHD to probe buckets in hash table(s) for existing methods is at least proportional to the square of the sequence length, while that using HD is proportional to the sequence length. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel fast non-exhaustive search method using WHD. The key idea is to design a constant sequence extension algorithm to perform each sequence extension in constant computational complexity and the total complexity is proportional to the sequence length, which is justified by theoretical analysis. Experimental results show that our method is faster than other WHD-based search methods. Also, compared with the HD-based non-exhaustive search method, our method has comparable efficiency but retrieves more query-related items for the dataset of up to one billion items

    CI431, an Aqueous Compound from Ciona intestinalis L., Induces Apoptosis through a Mitochondria-Mediated Pathway in Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells

    In the present studies, a novel compound with potent anti-tumor activity from Ciona intestinalis L. was purified by acetone fractionation, ultrafiltration, gel chromatography and High Performance Liquid Chromatography. The molecular weight of the highly purified compound, designated CI431, was 431Da as determined by HPLC-MS analysis. CI431 exhibited significant cytotoxicity to several cancer cell types. However, only a slight inhibitory effect was found when treating the benign human liver cell line BEL-7702 with the compound. To explore its mechanism against hepatocellular carcinoma, BEL-7402 cells were treated with CI431 in vitro. We found that CI431 induced apoptotic death in BEL-7402 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Cell cycle analysis demonstrated that CI431 caused cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase, and a sub-G1 peak appeared after 24 h. The mitochondrial-mediated pathway was implicated in this CI431-induced apoptosis as evidenced by the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential. The results suggest that the CI431 induces apoptosis in BEL-7402 human hepatoma cells by intrinsic mitochondrial pathway

    Role of MicroRNA-26b in Glioma Development and Its Mediated Regulation on EphA2

    BACKGROUND: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, non-coding RNAs that regulate the expression of multiple target genes. Deregulation of miRNAs is common in human tumorigenesis. Low level expression of miR-26b has been found in glioma cells. However, its underlying mechanism of action has not been determined. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Real-time PCR was employed to measure the expression level of miR-26b in glioma patients and cells. The level of miR-26b was inversely correlated with the grade of glioma. Ectopic expression of miR-26b inhibited the proliferation, migration and invasion of human glioma cells. A binding site for miR-26b was identified in the 3'UTR of EphA2. Over-expression of miR-26b in glioma cells repressed the endogenous level of EphA2 protein. Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) experiments were performed to further confirm the effects of miR-26b on the regulation of EphA2, and the results showed that miR-26b inhibited the VM processes which regulated by EphA2. SIGNIFICANCE: This study demonstrated that miR-26b may act as a tumor suppressor in glioma and it directly regulates EphA2 expression. EphA2 is a direct target of miR-26b, and the down-regulation of EphA2 mediated by miR-26b is dependent on the binding of miR-26b to a specific response element of microRNA in the 3'UTR region of EphA2 mRNA

    Development of CCUS Technology in the Context of Carbon Neutrality and Assessment of the Potential for Offshore Storage in Guangdong Province

    [Introduction] Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is one of the key technologies for achieving carbon neutrality. The coastal area of Guangdong Province is a potential area for offshore CO2 storage projects in China. Understanding the development status of CCUS technology in the context of carbon neutrality and analyzing the offshore CO2 storage potential in the coastal area of Guangdong Province are conducive to provide the basis for large-scale CCUS projects, especially the offshore storage projects in the future in China. [Method] The technical routes and development trends of all aspects of CCUS were summarized. The offshore geological storage potential of CO2 in the Pearl River Mouth Basin and the Beibu Gulf Basin off the coast of Guangdong Province was discussed. The problems of offshore CO2 storage in China were summarized, and relevant suggestions were put forward. [Result] In recent years, China has made significant progress in CCUS technology, but some key technologies in transportation and storage has been still at the R&D demonstration stage. The Pearl River Mouth Basin and the Beibu Gulf Basin have enormous geological storage potential of CO2 and an excellent matching relationship with large CO2 emission sources in the coastal area of Guangdong Province, making it an ideal locations for offshore CO2 storage projects. However, offshore CO2 storage still faces problems such as immature technology, high storage costs, uncertain environmental impacts, and inadequate policy and regulation frameworks in China. It is necessary to focus on technological development, promoting cluster projects, and improving policies and relevant regulations to advance the development of offshore CO2 storage. [Conclusion] In the future, China should strengthen research, development and promotion of CCUS, especially the offshore storage technology, to promote the progress of carbon neutrality

    Robust Speaker Verification Using Short-Time Frequency with Long-Time Window and Fusion of Multi-Resolutions

    Abstract This study presents a novel approach of feature analysis to speaker verification. There are two main contributions in this paper. First, the feature analysis of short-time frequency with long-time window (SFLW) is a compact feature for the efficiency of speaker verification. The purpose of SFLW is to take account of short-time frequency characteristics and longtime resolution at the same time. Secondly, the fusion of multi-resolutions is used for the effectiveness of robust speaker verification. The speaker verification system can be further improved using multi-resolution features. The experimental results indicate that the proposed approaches not only speed up the processing time but also improve the performance of speaker verification

    A genetic variation map for chicken with 2.8 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms

    We describe a genetic variation map for the chicken genome containing 2.8 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms ( SNPs). This map is based on a comparison of the sequences of three domestic chicken breeds ( a broiler, a layer and a Chinese silkie) with that of their wild ancestor, red jungle fowl. Subsequent experiments indicate that at least 90% of the variant sites are true SNPs, and at least 70% are common SNPs that segregate in many domestic breeds. Mean nucleotide diversity is about five SNPs per kilobase for almost every possible comparison between red jungle fowl and domestic lines, between two different domestic lines, and within domestic lines - in contrast to the notion that domestic animals are highly inbred relative to their wild ancestors. In fact, most of the SNPs originated before domestication, and there is little evidence of selective sweeps for adaptive alleles on length scales greater than 100 kilobases

    Baichuan 2: Open Large-scale Language Models

    Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance on a variety of natural language tasks based on just a few examples of natural language instructions, reducing the need for extensive feature engineering. However, most powerful LLMs are closed-source or limited in their capability for languages other than English. In this technical report, we present Baichuan 2, a series of large-scale multilingual language models containing 7 billion and 13 billion parameters, trained from scratch, on 2.6 trillion tokens. Baichuan 2 matches or outperforms other open-source models of similar size on public benchmarks like MMLU, CMMLU, GSM8K, and HumanEval. Furthermore, Baichuan 2 excels in vertical domains such as medicine and law. We will release all pre-training model checkpoints to benefit the research community in better understanding the training dynamics of Baichuan 2.Comment: Baichuan 2 technical report.     The I4U Mega Fusion and Collaboration for NIST Speaker Recognition Evaluation 2016

    The 2016 speaker recognition evaluation (SRE'16) is the latest edition in the series of benchmarking events conducted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). I4U is a joint entry to SRE'16 as the result from the collaboration and active exchange of information among researchers from sixteen Institutes and Universities across 4 continents. The joint submission and several of its 32 sub-systems were among top-performing systems. A lot of efforts have been devoted to two major challenges, namely, unlabeled training data and dataset shift from Switchboard-Mixer to the new Call My Net dataset. This paper summarizes the lessons learned, presents our shared view from the sixteen research groups on recent advances, major paradigm shift, and common tool chain used in speaker recognition as we have witnessed in SRE'16. More importantly, we look into the intriguing question of fusing a large ensemble of sub-systems and the potential benefit of large-scale collaboration.Peer reviewe
