PURPOSEThe prominent vessel sign (PVS) on susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) can be dichotomized into prominent cortical veins (PCV) and prominent medullary veins (PMV). This study was designed to compare the predictive value of PCV and PMV in the evaluation of the severity of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in patients within the reperfusion window.METHODSForty-seven consecutive patients with AIS within the middle cerebral artery territory were recruited. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed within 8 hours of symptom onset and at 7 days after stroke onset. Infarct volume was measured, and the early clinical outcome at 7 days was assessed using the modified Rankin Scale. PVS was dichotomized into cases with both PCV and PMV and cases with only PCV according to location.RESULTSPatients with both PCV and PMV (n=32) had higher admission National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale scores (p = 0.020), larger infarct volumes at baseline (p = 0.026) and 7 days (p = 0.007), and larger infarct growth at 7 days (p = 0.050) than those with PCV only. Multivariate regression analysis showed that both the time of onset at baseline (p = 0.013) and infarct growth at 7 days (p = 0.014) could independently predict poor early clinical outcome.CONCLUSIONPMV may predict poor early clinical outcome in AIS patients, and reperfusion therapy may, therefore, be required more urgently in patients with PMV

Understanding the co-evolution and organizational dynamics of urban properties (i.e., urban scaling) is the science base for pursuing synergies toward sustainable cities and society. The generalization of urban scaling theory yet requires more studies from various developmental regimes and across time. Here, we extend the universality proposition by exploring the evolution of longitudinal and transversal scaling of Chinese urban attributes between 1987 and 2018 using a global artificial impervious area (GAIA) remotely sensed dataset, harmonized night light data (NTL), and socioeconomic data, and revealed agreements and disagreements with theories. The superlinear relationship of urban area and population often considered as an indicator of wasting land resources (challenging the universality theory β  = 2/3), is in fact the powerful impetus (capital raising) behind the concurrent superlinear expansion of socio-economic metabolisms (e.g., GDP, total wage) in a rapidly urbanizing country that has not yet reached equilibrium. Similarly, infrastructural variables associated with public services, such as hospitals and educational institutions, exhibited some deviations as well and were scaled linearly. However, the temporal narrowing of spatial deviations, such as the decline in urban land diseconomies of scale and the stabilization of economic output, clearly indicates the Chinese government's effort in charting urban systems toward balanced and sustainable development across the country. More importantly, the transversal sublinear scaling of areal-based socio-economic variables was inconsistent with the theoretical concept of increasing returns to scale, thus validating the view that a single measurement cannot unravel the intricate web of diverse urban attributes and urbanization. Our dynamic urban scaling analysis across space and through time in China provides new insights into the evolving nexus of urbanization, socioeconomic development, and national policies

The structural and optical properties of GaSb/InGaAs type-II quantum dots grown on InP (100) substrate

We have investigated the structural and optical properties of type-II GaSb/InGaAs quantum dots [QDs] grown on InP (100) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. Rectangular-shaped GaSb QDs were well developed and no nanodash-like structures which could be easily found in the InAs/InP QD system were formed. Low-temperature photoluminescence spectra show there are two peaks centered at 0.75eV and 0.76ev. The low-energy peak blueshifted with increasing excitation power is identified as the indirect transition from the InGaAs conduction band to the GaSb hole level (type-II), and the high-energy peak is identified as the direct transition (type-I) of GaSb QDs. This material system shows a promising application on quantum-dot infrared detectors and quantum-dot field-effect transistor

Long-term satellite observations show continuous increase of vegetation growth enhancement in urban environment

Urbanization shows continuous expansion and development, ushering in the co-evolution of urban environments and vegetation over time. Recent remote sensing-based studies have discovered prevalent vegetation growth enhancement in urban environments. However, whether there is a temporal evolution of the growth enhancement remains unknown and unexplored. Here we expanded the existing framework for assessing the long-term impact of urbanization on vegetation greenness (enhanced vegetation index, EVI) using long time series of remote sensing images and applied it in Changsha, the capital city of Hunan province in China. Results showed that vegetation growth experienced widespread enhancement from 2000 to 2017, and increased 1.8 times from 2000 to 2017, suggesting strong continuous adaptive capability of vegetation to urban conditions. Although the overall impact of urbanization was negative due to the replacement of vegetated surfaces, the growth enhancement nevertheless offset or compensated the direct loss of vegetated cover during urbanization in the magnitude of 28% in 2000 to 44% in 2017. Our study also revealed large spatial heterogeneity in vegetation growth response among various districts at different urbanization levels and found an emergent trend under the observed spatial heterogeneity toward an asymptotic maximum with urbanization, showing EVI converges to 0.22 in highly urbanized areas. We further found that the positive effect of urbanization on vegetation growth is a function of urbanization intensity and time, which implies that the effect of the urban environment on vegetation can be simulated and predicted, and can be verified in more cities in the future. Our study is the first to successfully quantify long-term spatial patterns on the co-evolution of urbanization and vegetation, providing a new understanding of the continuous adaptive responses of vegetation growth to urbanization and shedding light on predicting 24 biological responses to future environmental change

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Formation Induced Fluorescent and Colorimetric Sensing of Fluoride Using Perimidinium Derivatives

    Get PDF
International audienceIn this study, two perimidinium derivatives (1 and 2) were designed, synthesized, and developed as efficient fluorescent and colorimetric chemodosisensors for F− in DMSO or more competitive media (DMSO containing 10 % water). In the presence of F−, the yellow and non-fluorescent solution of 1/2 became colourless and exhibited strong blue fluorescence. This unique spectroscopic behaviour of 1/2 towards F− was attributed to the formation of N-heterocyclic carbene deprotonated by F−, which immediately reacted with water to give a colourless and fluorescent carbinol. Interestingly, it was found that this carbinol intermediate was unstable and further underwent a redox disproportionation to generate two other optically changed compounds. All the proposed mechanisms for the sensing process have been carefully confirmed by experiments

Loss of electrical β-cell to δ-cell coupling underlies impaired hypoglycaemia-induced glucagon secretion in type-1 diabetes

    Get PDF
Diabetes mellitus involves both insufficient insulin secretion and dysregulation of glucagon secretion1. In healthy people, a fall in plasma glucose stimulates glucagon release and thereby increases counter-regulatory hepatic glucose production. This response is absent in many patients with type-1 diabetes (T1D)2, which predisposes to severe hypoglycaemia that may be fatal and accounts for up to 10% of the mortality in patients with T1D3. In rats with chemically induced or autoimmune diabetes, counter-regulatory glucagon secretion can be restored by SSTR antagonists4–7 but both the underlying cellular mechanism and whether it can be extended to humans remain unestablished. Here, we show that glucagon secretion is not stimulated by low glucose in isolated human islets from donors with T1D, a defect recapitulated in non-obese diabetic mice with T1D. This occurs because of hypersecretion of somatostatin, leading to aberrant paracrine inhibition of glucagon secretion. Normally, KATP channel-dependent hyperpolarization of β-cells at low glucose extends into the δ-cells through gap junctions, culminating in suppression of action potential firing and inhibition of somatostatin secretion. This ‘electric brake’ is lost following autoimmune destruction of the β-cells, resulting in impaired counter-regulation. This scenario accounts for the clinical observation that residual β-cell function correlates with reduced hypoglycaemia risk8.</p

A Rapid and Easy Way for National Forest Heights Retrieval in China Using ICESat-2/ATL08 in 2019

Continuous and extensive monitoring of forest height is essential for estimating forest above-ground biomass and predicting the ability of forests to absorb CO2. In particular, forest height at the national scale is an important indicator reflecting the national forestry economic construction, environmental governance, and ecological balance. However, the lack of inventory data restricts large-scale monitoring of forest height to some extent. Conducting manual surveys of forest height for large-scale areas would be labor-intensive and time-consuming. The successful launch of the new generation of spaceborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) (The Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2/the Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System, ICESat-2/ATLAS) has brought new opportunities for national-scale forestry resource surveys. This paper explores a method to survey national forest canopy height from the new generation of ICESat-2/ATLAS data. In view of the sparse sampling and little overlap between repeated spaceborne LiDAR data, a strategy for assessing the overall change of canopy height for large scales is provided. Some spatially continuous ancillary data were used to assist ICESat-2/ATLAS data to generate a wall-to-wall (spatially continuous) forest canopy height map in China by using the machine learning approach and then quantifying the analysis of forest canopy height in various provinces. The results show that there is a good correlation between the model forest height and the verification data, with a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 3.30 m and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.87. This indicates that the method for retrieving national forest canopy height is reliable. There are some limitations in areas with lower vegetation coverage or complex topography which need additional filtering or terrain correction to achieve higher accuracy in measuring forest canopy height. Our analysis suggests that ICESat-2/ATLAS data can achieve the retrieval of national forest height at an overall level, and it would be feasible to use ICESAT-2/ATLAS products to estimate forest canopy height change for large-scale areas
