The Role of Text Pre-processing in Sentiment Analysis

    Get PDF
It is challenging to understand the latest trends and summarise the state or general opinions about products due to the big diversity and size of social media data, and this creates the need of automated and real time opinion extraction and mining. Mining online opinion is a form of sentiment analysis that is treated as a difficult text classification task. In this paper, we explore the role of text pre-processing in sentiment analysis, and report on experimental results that demonstrate that with appropriate feature selection and representation, sentiment analysis accuracies using support vector machines (SVM) in this area may be significantly improved. The level of accuracy achieved is shown to be comparable to the ones achieved in topic categorisation although sentiment analysis is considered to be a much harder problem in the literature

Sentiment analysis: text, pre-processing, reader views and cross domains

This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University LondonSentiment analysis has emerged as a field that has attracted a significant amount of attention since it has a wide variety of applications that could benefit from its results, such as news analytics, marketing, question answering, knowledge management and so on. This area, however, is still early in its development where urgent improvements are required on many issues, particularly on the performance of sentiment classification. In this thesis, three key challenging issues affecting sentiment classification are outlined and innovative ways of addressing these issues are presented. First, text pre-processing has been found crucial on the sentiment classification performance. Consequently, a combination of several existing preprocessing methods is proposed for the sentiment classification process. Second, text properties of financial news are utilised to build models to predict sentiment. Two different models are proposed, one that uses financial events to predict financial news sentiment, and the other uses a new interesting perspective that considers the opinion reader view, as opposed to the classic approach that examines the opinion holder view. A new method to capture the reader sentiment is suggested. Third, one characteristic of financial news is that it stretches over a number of domains, and it is very challenging to infer sentiment between different domains. Various approaches for cross-domain sentiment analysis have been proposed and critically evaluated

Tackling Difficulties in Translating Culture-bound Metaphor in Nizar Qabbani’s Poetry: A Comparative Study

    Get PDF
Arabic poetry has long taken precedence over other literary forms. It is the oldest form of literature known in the Arabic language, dating back to year 400 A.D. In the context of translation, poetry poses a few daunting hurdles in attempting to reach equally metaphorical meanings in the target language. This article seeks to illustrate the cultural problems witnessed in translating culture-bound metaphor. For this purpose, poetry by prominent Arab poet Nizar Qabbani is the main reference and the selected case study in the article for the poet’s place and contribution in Arabic poetry. The theoretical framework adopts two translation models— Newmark’s Semantic Translation and Den Broeck’s literal, paraphrase and substitution. In addition to illustrating difficulties emanating from translating culture-bound metaphor, the article will present a comparative analysis of two translations of one poetic text, thereby hopefully serving as a valuable contribution to the area of cultural metaphor translation by providing a range of translation possibilities starting from Dynamic Equivalence or idiomatic translation and continuing through literal and semantic translations. In doing so, the article has tackled strategies in the field of cultural metaphor translation, which will hopefully lead to further research

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the inhibition of the xanthine oxydase (XO) by the crude extract of Pistacia lentiscus L. leaves and their subsequent fractions (chloroformic, ethyl acetate, butanolic and aqueous) in order to find a natural substitute which could have a superior effect of inhibiting XO activity and can be used as an alternative to allopurinol witch is used in therapeutic and clinical management of gout. Methods: The degree of XO inhibitory activity was determined by measuring the absorbance spectrophotometrically at 295 nm, which is associated with uric acid formation. The different extracts were subjected to chemical screening for preliminary identification of the secondary metabolites. Phenolic acids and flavonoids detected were quantitatively determined. Results: The results have shown that the crude and ethyl acetate extracts were found to have XO inhibitory activity reaching more than 50 % at a concentration of 100 mg/mL (ethyl acetate fraction with 60.2 %, Necessary concentration to inhibe 50% of xanthine oxidase (IC50) = 2.50, the crude with 55.3 %, IC50 = 2.57), for the butanolic fraction the inhibition reaches 17.5 %, the aqueous 15.4 % and chloroformic 4.5 %.The comparison was also made with a positive control allopurinol at a concentration of 100μg/mL. The result shows a slight difference, allopurinol has exhibited the highest XO inhibitory activity (71.8 %).The phytochemical tests show various fluorescence, the quantitative dosage of total phenolic compounds and flavonoids shows respectively a quantities of 246.7 mg gallic acid equivalent (GA) eq /g and 70.9 mg catechin equivalent (Cat) eq /g of lyophilized powder for the crude extract. Conclusion: These results suggest that the crude and ethyl acetate extracts of Pistacia lentiscus leaves can be used as an alternative to allopurinol due to their high inhibition activity of XO. This article addresses a multi-agent approach to solving the problem of integrating metacognitive incentives into Learning Management System. The behavior of the teacher in a classroom-teaching situation, where teacher adopting the competency-based approach, is characterized by a set of didactic interventions dynamically adaptable according to the actions-reactions of the learners. These interventions are continually subjected to perfection by experience. In this article, we are interested in modeling the multi-agent system in order to help the learners develop their metacognitive skills in a continuous way. The purpose of this system is to supervise the activities and statements of the learner and communicate them to the metacognitive agent. The latter focuses on the assessment of the learner's metacognitive skills in order to trigger, automatically, metacognitive incentives to provide help messages. Integrating the agent for metacognitive control and assistance, allows learners to maintain motivation and confidence, and elicit their attention to the importance of metacognitive skills during learning activity. The "MaSE" methodology and the "agentTool" are used to model the multi-agent system

A novel approach to dynamic profiling of e-customers considering click stream data and online reviews

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present an approach for mining change in customer’s behavior for the purpose of maintaining robust profiling model over time. Most of previous studies leave important questions unanswered: In developing B2C e-commerce strategies, how do managers implicitly load customer’s profiles based on their satisfaction over the online store characteristics? And: What kind of feedback segments do they have? Our proposed approach does not force customers to explicitly express their preference information over the online service but rather capture their preference from their online activities. The challenge does not only lay in analyzing how customer’s classifier model change and when it does so but also to adapt it to the customer’s click stream data using a new decision tree generation algorithm which takes as inputs new set of variables; categorical, continuous and fuzzy variables. Customer’s online reviews rates are considered as classes. Experiments show that this work performed well in identifying relevant customer’s stream data to judge the chinese e-commerce website “Tmall”. The extracted values of the website’s features are also useful to identifying the satisfaction level when the customer’s rate is not available.

The major disadvantage of the current Learning Management Systems is the lack of learner assistance in their learning processes and, therefore, they can not replace the presence of the teacher who ensures the progress of learning. In fact, we proposed to integrate, for each learner, a metacognitive agent that supported the metacognitive assistance and extracts the defectsin the learning process and strategies. The goal is to invite the learner to correct himself and improve his learning method. Metacognitive questionnaires were distributed to a group of 100 students before, during and after a computer course. The goal is to evaluatethe metacognitive attributes and to determine their influence on the success of learning. Decision trees were used as data analysis tools to extract a set of rules and to discover the influence of these metacognitive attributes on the result obtained by the learners. The results indicate that there are relationships between the different metacognitive attributes and the learners’ success. We note there is the influence of metacognitive incitement on learner outcomes, which reflects the degree of understanding of a learning pedagogical unit by the learner
