    Culture of Selected Microalgae in Rubber and Palm Oil Mill Effluents and their Use in the Production of Enriched Rotifers

    Three freshwater microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, Selellastrum gracile and Ankistrodesmus convolutlls showed high growth performances in terms of specific growth rate (SGR) of cell and chlorophyll a, total carotene and observed yield when grown in inorganic media with sodium acetate. Total protein of S. gracile was higher than A. convolutus followed by C. vulgaris, whereas reverse trend was observed in the case of total lipid. Among 11 essential amino acids (EAAs), phenylalanine, leucine and lysine were found to be higher in C. vulgaris, S. gracile and A. convolutus than other EAAS. All the evaluated polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) of CIS, C20 and C22 were higher in C. vulgaris grown in Bold Basal Medium with sodium (Na) acetate (BBMAC) and Modified Medium with Na acetate (MMAC) than cultured in other media. In addition, S. gracile and A. convolutus grown in BBMAC and MMAC contained significantly (p<0.05) higher amount of PUFAs except linolenic acid ( 18:3n-3 ) and eicosatrienoic acid (20: 3n-6) than cultured in other media. All together 26 essential minerals were detected and 22 essential minerals were quantified where total bioaccumulated minerals was below the optimum level and significantly (p <0.01) correlated with these minerals available in media

    Three Essays On Applied General Equilibrium Analysis

    The thesis develops three essays which involve diverse issues like the estimation of the parameters of a fully specified general equilibrium model, estimation of import and export demand elasticities with some general equilibrium (GE) closure rule and formulating a decomposition algorithm for GE models with proper structure. While the questions addressed are somewhat unrelated to each other, the essays involve issues related to models which are essentially Walrasian in nature. The three essays are: (1) On the Estimation of General Equilibrium Models; (2) Estimation of Import and Export Demand Elasticities and Elasticity Pessimism; and (3) A Dantzig-Wolfe Type Decomposition Algorithm for General Equilibrium Models with Applications to International Trade Models. ;The first essay discusses various econometric approaches to estimate simple and relatively small GE systems. We discuss both system and subsystem estimation, reviewing some of the literature on demand and production functions and suggest two types of Nonlinear Instrumental Variable Methods. We report and compare the parameter estimates obtained from both stochastic and deterministic methods for a small GE tax model of the U.S. economy, and finally evaluate alternative approaches to parameter selection.;The second essay argues that the import and export demand functions should be estimated simultaneously along with trade balance conditions which close the system, a kind of specification recognized in pure trade theory literature and empirically oriented GE models. Ignorance of this simultaneously makes the estimates biased downwards for both small and large sample cases with bearing on the issue surrounding the controversy of elasticity pessimism. ;The third essay describes the computation of general equilibrium via a fixed point decomposition procedure similar in spirit to the Dantzig and Wolfe (1961) decomposition algorithm for the solution of linear programming problems. We show that for a GE model of block diagonal structures, one can compute equilibria of the full dimensional problem by solving sequences of smaller dimensional master and subproblems. Information passes between master and subproblems and the procedure is guaranteed to terminate at an approximate equilibrium without cycling. We discuss the existence and computation of such equilibria, potential applications and computational efficiency compared to the full dimensional methods

    Local creative culture and audit fees

    This paper examines the association between local creative culture and audit fees. Using a large, unbalanced panel data of listed US firms between 2004 and 2018, we find evidence that firms headquartered in US counties with high creative culture tend to pay higher audit fees than firms headquartered in counties with low creative culture. We also find that such firms tend to have longer audit report lag and are subject to more shareholder litigation. Cross-sectional tests show that real earnings management, managerial risk-taking propensity, and external corporate governance environment moderate the positive association between creative culture and audit fees. The positive association between local creative culture and audit fees remains robust to controlling for endogeneity concerns. Our study contributes to the emerging literature on local creative culture by providing evidence that local creative culture encourages managers and employees to undertake risky initiatives, thereby increasing audit risks

    Analysis of Electrolyte Flow in Localized Electrochemical Deposition

    AbstractLocalized electrochemical deposition (LECD) is a favorable technology for fabrication of the high-aspect ratio electrodes of various materials. This technology is found to be one of the simple and inexpensive ways to fabricate non-circular electrodes for micro-EDM. In order to fabricate non-circular electrodes a mask of non-conductive material is placed between the anode and cathode, which is immersed in a mixed electrolyte of copper sulfate, 1.0M sulfuric acid and as an additive agent 0.04 gm/liter of thiourea. The deposition of copper is localized on the cathode surface using a mask and applying ultra-short voltage pulses between the anode and cathode. In this set up the cathode is placed above the anode and mask, so that the deposited electrode can be used directly for EDM or any application without changing its orientation. In order to localize the deposited structure on the cathode surface, the electrolyte needs to flow through the mask and needs to touch the cathode and a constant flow rate of the electrolyte is maintained by using a pump. For this reason, micro holes of desired shapes are fabricated in the mask using micro milling. This study shows the effect of electrolyte flow through the micro holes of the mask and micro gap between the mask and anode on the microstructure of deposited electrode using FLUENT analysis. Moreover, an optimum range of electrolyte flow rate through the micro passages is also shown for the LECD process in order to fabricate high aspect ratio microstructures

    Design and evaluation of an adaptive traffic conditioner in differentiated services networks

    Abstract—We design and evaluate an adaptive traffic conditioner to improve application performance over the differentiated services assured forwarding behavior. The conditioner is adaptive because the marking algorithm changes based upon the current number of flows traversing through an edge router. If there are a small number of flows, the conditioner maintains and uses state information to intelligently protect critical TCP packets. On the other hand, if there are many flows going through the edge router, the conditioner only uses flow characteristics as indicated in the TCP packet headers to mark without requiring per flow state. Simulation results indicate that this adaptive conditioner improves throughput of data extensive applications like large FTP transfers, and achieves low packet delays and response times for Telnet and WWW traffic.
