    Nonlinear alternating current responses of graded materials

    When a composite of nonlinear particles suspended in a host medium is subjected to a sinusoidal electric field, the electrical response in the composite will generally consist of alternating current (AC) fields at frequencies of higher-order harmonics. The situation becomes more interesting when the suspended particles are graded, with a spatial variation in the dielectric properties. The local electric field inside the graded particles can be calculated by the differential effective dipole approximation, which agrees very well with a first-principles approach. In this work, a nonlinear differential effective dipole approximation and a perturbation expansion method have been employed to investigate the effect of gradation on the nonlinear AC responses of these composites. The results showed that the fundamental and third-harmonic AC responses are sensitive to the dielectric-constant and/or nonlinear-susceptibility gradation profiles within the particles. Thus, by measuring the AC responses of the graded composites, it is possible to perform a real-time monitoring of the fabrication process of the gradation profiles within the graded particles.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure

    Weak Gravity Conjecture for Noncommutative Field Theory

    We investigate the weak gravity bounds on the U(1) gauge theory and scalar field theories in various dimensional noncommutative space. Many results are obtained, such as the upper bound on the noncommutative scale gYMMpg_{YM}M_p for four dimensional noncommutative U(1) gauge theory. We also discuss the weak gravity bounds on their commutative counterparts. For example, our result on 4 dimensional noncommutative U(1) gauge theory reduces in certain limit to its commutative counterpart suggested by Arkani-Hamed et.al at least at tree-level.Comment: 9 page

    When Do ISVs Join a Platform Ecosystem? Evidence from the Enterprise Software Industry

    In the enterprise software industry leading firms usually adopt an open platform strategy and nurture their innovation ecosystem to achieve the shared success of the community. In this study we examine the antecedents of small independent software vendors’ (ISVs’) decision to join a platform ecosystem. Using data of 1208 ISVs’ history of partnering activities with a major enterprise software marker from 1996 to 2004, we find that appropriability strategies based on intellectual property rights and the possession of downstream complementary capabilities by ISVs are positively related to the partnership formation, and ISVs use the two mechanisms as substitutes to prevent expropriation by the platform owner. In addition, we show that greater level of competition in the downstream market between ISVs and the platform owner negatively affects the likelihood of partnering. The results highlight the role of innovation appropriation, downstream complementary capabilities and collaborative competition in the formation of enterprise software platform ecosystems

    Separable and non-separable multi-field inflation and large non-Gaussianity

    In this paper we provide a general framework based on ÎŽN\delta N formalism to estimate the cosmological observables pertaining to the cosmic microwave background radiation for non-separable potentials, and for generic \emph{end of inflation} boundary conditions. We provide analytical and numerical solutions to the relevant observables by decomposing the cosmological perturbations along the curvature and the isocurvature directions, \emph{instead of adiabatic and entropy directions}. We then study under what conditions large bi-spectrum and tri-spectrum can be generated through phase transition which ends inflation. In an illustrative example, we show that large fNL∌O(80)f_{NL}\sim {\cal O}(80) and τNL∌O(20000)\tau_{NL}\sim {\cal O}(20000) can be obtained for the case of separable and non-separable inflationary potentials.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figure

    Dielectrophoresis of charged colloidal suspensions

    We present a theoretical study of dielectrophoretic (DEP) crossover spectrum of two polarizable particles under the action of a nonuniform AC electric field. For two approaching particles, the mutual polarization interaction yields a change in their respective dipole moments, and hence, in the DEP crossover spectrum. The induced polarization effects are captured by the multiple image method. Using spectral representation theory, an analytic expression for the DEP force is derived. We find that the mutual polarization effects can change the crossover frequency at which the DEP force changes sign. The results are found to be in agreement with recent experimental observation and as they go beyond the standard theory, they help to clarify the important question of the underlying polarization mechanisms

    Scale dependence of fNLf_{NL} in N-flation

    Adopting the horizon-crossing approximation, we derive the spectral index of fNLf_{NL} in general N-flation model. Axion N-flation model is taken as a typical model for generating a large fNLf_{NL} which characterizes the size of local form bispectrum. We find that its tilt nfNLn_{f_{NL}} is negligibly small when all inflatons have the same potential, but a negative detectable nfNLn_{f_{NL}} can be achieved in the axion N-flation with different decay constants for different inflatons. The measurement of nfNLn_{f_{NL}} can be used to support or falsify the axion N-flation in the near future.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures; a subsection with detectable scale dependence of f_NL added; more discussions added and version accepted for publication in JCA

    Popular matchings in the marriage and roommates problems

    Popular matchings have recently been a subject of study in the context of the so-called House Allocation Problem, where the objective is to match applicants to houses over which the applicants have preferences. A matching M is called popular if there is no other matching Mâ€Č with the property that more applicants prefer their allocation in Mâ€Č to their allocation in M. In this paper we study popular matchings in the context of the Roommates Problem, including its special (bipartite) case, the Marriage Problem. We investigate the relationship between popularity and stability, and describe efficient algorithms to test a matching for popularity in these settings. We also show that, when ties are permitted in the preferences, it is NP-hard to determine whether a popular matching exists in both the Roommates and Marriage cases

    Theory of ac electrokinetic behavior of spheroidal cell suspensions with an intrinsic dispersion

    The dielectric dispersion, dielectrophoretic (DEP) and electrorotational (ER) spectra of spheroidal biological cell suspensions with an intrinsic dispersion in the constituent dielectric constants are investigated. By means of the spectral representation method, we express analytically the characteristic frequencies and dispersion strengths both for the effective dielectric constant and the Clausius-Mossotti factor (CMF). We identify four and six characteristic frequencies for the effective dielectric spectra and CMF respectively, all of them being dependent on the depolarization factor (or the cell shape). The analytical results allow us to examine the effects of the cell shape, the dispersion strength and the intrinsic frequency on the dielectric dispersion, DEP and ER spectra. Furthermore, we include the local-field effects due to the mutual interactions between cells in a dense suspension, and study the dependence of co-field or anti-field dispersion peaks on the volume fractions.Comment: accepted by Phys.
