Photoluminescent characteristics of Ni-catalyzed GaN nanowires
The authors report on time-integrated and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) of GaN nanowires grown by the Ni-catalyst-assisted vapor-liquid-solid method. From PL spectra of Ni-catalyzed GaN nanowires at 10 K, several PL peaks were observed at 3.472, 3.437, and 3.266 eV, respectively. PL peaks at 3.472 and 3.266 eV are attributed to neutral-donor-bound excitons and donor-acceptor pair, respectively. Furthermore, according to the results from temperature-dependent and time-resolved PL measurements, the origin of the PL peak at 3.437 eV is also discussed. Facile preparation of antibacterial, highly elastic silvered polyurethane nanofiber fabrics using silver carbamate and their dermal wound healing properties
In this study, polycarbonate diol/isosorbide-based antibacterial polyurethane nanofiber fabrics containing Ag nanoparticles were prepared by electrospinning process. Bio-based highly elastic polyurethane was prepared from hexamethylene diisocyanate and isosorbide/polycarbonate diol (8/2) by a simple one-shot bulk polymerization. Ag nanoparticles were formed using simple thermal reduction of silver 2-ethylhexylcarbamate at 120℃. The structural and morphological properties of polyurethane/Ag nanofibers were characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The polyurethane nanofiber fabrics were flexible, with breaking strains from 355% to 950% under 7.28 to 23.1 MPa tensile stress. The antibacterial effects of the treated polyurethane/Ag fabrics against Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus were examined and found to be excellent. Cell proliferation using the immortalized human keratinocyte HaCaT cell line was performed in order to determine cell viability in the presence of polyurethane and polyurethane/Ag fabrics, showing cytocompatiblility and a lack of toxicity
Study on the serum oxidative stress status in silicosis patients
To determine whether oxidative-stress damage play an important role in the mechanism of silicosis, the oxidative stress parameters were investigated in silicosis patients and controls group. 128 silicosis patients and 130 healthy controls were included. The serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and the levels of malonyldialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) were analyzed. The levels of GSH and MDA in silicosis patients were significantly higher than those of the controls group. SOD activity was higher in the silicosis group than that in the controls (p < 0.05) except for III stage. None of the 3 variables examined were associated with the age among both the controls and silicosis patients. The GSH level and SOD activity significantly declined over a prolonged disease period, while MDA levels remained largely unaffected by the disease duration. These results confirmed the role of oxidative stress in the mechanism of silicosis. Therefore, effective antioxidant therapy for inhibiting oxidative stress may be a therapeutic option in silicosis.Key words: Silica, silicosis, superoxide dismutase, glutathione, malondialdehyde
Monomeric ephrinB2 binding induces allosteric changes in Nipah virus G that precede its full activation.
Nipah virus is an emergent paramyxovirus that causes deadly encephalitis and respiratory infections in humans. Two glycoproteins coordinate the infection of host cells, an attachment protein (G), which binds to cell surface receptors, and a fusion (F) protein, which carries out the process of virus-cell membrane fusion. The G protein binds to ephrin B2/3 receptors, inducing G conformational changes that trigger F protein refolding. Using an optical approach based on second harmonic generation, we show that monomeric and dimeric receptors activate distinct conformational changes in G. The monomeric receptor-induced changes are not detected by conformation-sensitive monoclonal antibodies or through electron microscopy analysis of G:ephrinB2 complexes. However, hydrogen/deuterium exchange experiments confirm the second harmonic generation observations and reveal allosteric changes in the G receptor binding and F-activating stalk domains, providing insights into the pathway of receptor-activated virus entry.Nipah virus causes encephalitis in humans. Here the authors use a multidisciplinary approach to study the binding of the viral attachment protein G to its host receptor ephrinB2 and show that monomeric and dimeric receptors activate distinct conformational changes in G and discuss implications for receptor-activated virus entry
Epilepsy in China: major progress in the past two decades
China has approximately 10 million people with epilepsy. There is a vast epilepsy treatment gap in China, mainly driven by deficiencies in health-care delivery and social discrimination resulting from cultural beliefs about epilepsy. WHO's Global Campaign Against Epilepsy project in China showed that it was possible to treat epilepsy in primary care settings, which was a notable milestone. The China Association Against Epilepsy has been a necessary force to stimulate interest in epilepsy care and research by the medical and scientific community. Nearly 20 different anti-seizure medications are now available in China. Non-pharmacological options are also available, but there are still unmet needs for epilepsy management. The Chinese epilepsy research portfolio is varied, but the areas in which there are the most concentrated focus and expertise are epidemiology and clinical research. The challenges for further improvement in delivering care for people with epilepsy in China are primarily related to public health and reducing inequalities within this vast country
Quantitative analysis on electric dipole energy in Rashba band splitting
We report on quantitative comparison between the electric dipole energy and the Rashba band splitting in model systems of Bi and Sb triangular monolayers under a perpendicular electric field. We used both first-principles and tight binding calculations on p-orbitals with spin-orbit coupling. First-principles calculation shows Rashba band splitting in both systems. It also shows asymmetric charge distributions in the Rashba split bands which are induced by the orbital angular momentum. We calculated the electric dipole energies from coupling of the asymmetric charge distribution and external electric field, and compared it to the Rashba splitting. Remarkably, the total split energy is found to come mostly from the difference in the electric dipole energy for both Bi and Sb systems. A perturbative approach for long wave length limit starting from tight binding calculation also supports that the Rashba band splitting originates mostly from the electric dipole energy difference in the strong atomic spin-orbit coupling regime.1131Ysciescopu
Do differences in profiling criteria bias performance measurements? Economic profiling of medical clinics under the Korea National Health Insurance program: An observational study using claims data

Abstract

Background

With a greater emphasis on cost containment in many health care systems, it has become common to evaluate each physician's relative resource use. This study explored the major factors that influence the economic performance rankings of medical clinics in the Korea National Health Insurance (NHI) program by assessing the consistency between cost-efficiency indices constructed using different profiling criteria.

Methods

Data on medical care benefit costs for outpatient care at medical clinics nationwide were collected from the NHI claims database. We calculated eight types of cost-efficiency index with different profiling criteria for each medical clinic and investigated the agreement between the decile rankings of each index pair using the weighted kappa statistic.

Results

The exclusion of pharmacy cost lowered agreement between rankings to the lowest level, and differences in case-mix classification also lowered agreement considerably.

Conclusions

A medical clinic may be identified as either cost-efficient or cost-inefficient, even when using the same index, depending on the profiling criteria applied. Whether a country has a single insurance or a multiple-insurer system, it is very important to have standardized profiling criteria for the consolidated management of health care costs.</p
Disrupted-in-schizophrenia 1 (DISC1) and Syntaphilin collaborate to modulate axonal mitochondrial anchoring
In neuronal axons, the ratio of motile-to-stationary mitochondria is tightly regulated by neuronal activation, thereby meeting the need for local calcium buffering and maintaining the ATP supply. However, the molecular players and detailed regulatory mechanisms behind neuronal mitochondrial movement are not completely understood. Here, we found that neuronal activation-induced mitochondrial anchoring is regulated by Disrupted-in-schizophrenia 1 (DISC1), which is accomplished by functional association with Syntaphilin (SNPH). DISC1 deficiency resulted in reduced axonal mitochondrial movement, which was partially reversed by concomitant SNPH depletion. In addition, a SNPH deletion mutant lacking the sequence for interaction with DISC1 exhibited an enhanced mitochondrial anchoring effect than wild-type SNPH. Moreover, upon neuronal activation, mitochondrial movement was preserved by DISC1 overexpression, not showing immobilized response of mitochondria. Taken together, we propose that DISC1 in association with SNPH is a component of a modulatory complex that determines mitochondrial anchoring in response to neuronal activation.117Ysciescopu
Experimental GHZ Entanglement beyond Qubits
The Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) argument provides an all-or-nothing
contradiction between quantum mechanics and local-realistic theories. In its
original formulation, GHZ investigated three and four particles entangled in
two dimensions only. Very recently, higher dimensional contradictions
especially in three dimensions and three particles have been discovered but it
has remained unclear how to produce such states. In this article we
experimentally show how to generate a three-dimensional GHZ state from
two-photon orbital-angular-momentum entanglement. The first suggestion for a
setup which generates three-dimensional GHZ entanglement from these entangled
pairs came from using the computer algorithm Melvin. The procedure employs
novel concepts significantly beyond the qubit case. Our experiment opens up the
possibility of a truly high-dimensional test of the GHZ-contradiction which,
interestingly, employs non-Hermitian operators.Comment: 6+6 pages, 8 figure
Measurement of inner wall limiter SOL widths in KSTAR tokamak
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.nme.2016.12.001.Scrape-off layer (SOL) widths λq are presented from the KSTAR tokamak using fast reciprocating Langmuir probe assembly (FRLPA) measurements at the outboard mid-plane (OMP) and the infra-Red (IR) thermography at inboard limiter tiles in moderately elongated (κ = 1.45 – 1.55) L-mode inner wall-limited (IWL) plasmas under experimental conditions such as BT = 2.0 T, PNBI = 1.4 – 1.5 MW, line averaged densities 2.5 – 5.1 × 1019 m−3) and plasma current Ip = 0.4 − 0.7 MA. There is clear evidence for a double exponential structure in q||(r) from the FRLPA such that, for example at Ip = 0.6 MA, a narrow feature, λq,near (=3.5 mm) is found close to the LFCS, followed by a broader width, λq,main (=57.0 mm). Double exponential profiles (λq,near = 1.5 – 2.8 mm, λq,main = 17.0 – 35.0 mm) can be also observed in the IR heat flux mapped to the OMP throughout the range of Ip investigated. In addition, analysis of SOL turbulence statistics obtained with the FRLPA shows high relative fluctuation levels and positively skewed distributions in electron temperature and ion particle flux across the SOL, with both properties increasing for longer distance from the LCFS, as often previously observed in the tokamaks. Interestingly, the fluctuation character expressed in terms of spectral distributions remains unchanged in passing from the narrow to the broad SOL heat flux channel
