Scandinavian Flagship Universities: an Appraisal of Leading National Universities in the European Context
In the immediate post-Sputnik era, Clark Kerr saw America’s breed of universities as “multiversities,” characterized by growing enrollment, an increasingly diversified academic community, and as the emerging driver of knowledge production and innovation (Kerr 2001: xi). This is now a widely shared vision throughout the world. Governments have provided additional funding, fueling further growth in academic programs and attracting talent. One result: the number of perceived stakeholders has increased, along with their expectations
Support in Assessment of Prior Learning: Personal or Online?
Assessment of Prior Learning (APL) offers significant benefits to adult learners. It reduces the gap between educational programmes and thelabour market and provides learners the possibility to shorten their prospective
study programmes. APL however requires adequate support of the learners that engage in APL. This study investigates which support possibilities could be useful and efficient for APL candidates in a distance education context. Staff members of an APL provider (APL tutors and educational scientists), APL candidates and a group of experts on online support evaluated and discussed the possibilities of both embedded and personal support in APL.
With regard to the different phases that can be distinguished in APL, the results show that all participants expect support particularly in the phase of gathering appropriate evidence. From the staff members’ perspective, embedded support is most appropriate and many types of support provisions are recommended.
APL candidates prefer a combination of embedded and personal support, whereby the type of personal support can be limited to telephone and email support. The latter is preferred because of its personal, to-the-point and
time independent character. An overview of the highest added value of support as well as support efficiency is provided. Unfortunately, the highest added value is not always the most efficient. Guidelines for the elaboration of efficient support with high added value in APL in the context of distance education are
presented
Receptor Tyrosine Kinases in Osteosarcoma: 2019 Update
The primary conclusions of our 2014 contribution to this series were as follows:
Multiple receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) likely contribute to aggressive phenotypes in osteosarcoma and, therefore, inhibition of multiple RTKs is likely necessary for successful clinical outcomes.
Inhibition of multiple RTKs may also be useful to overcome resistance to inhibitors of individual RTKs as well as resistance to conventional chemotherapies.
Different combinations of RTKs are likely important in individual patients.
AXL, EPHB2, FGFR2, IGF1R, and RET were identified as promising therapeutic targets by our in vitro phosphoproteomic/siRNA screen of 42 RTKs in the highly metastatic LM7 and 143B human osteosarcoma cell lines.
This chapter is intended to provide an update on these topics as well as the large number of osteosarcoma clinical studies of inhibitors of multiple tyrosine kinases (multi-TKIs) that were recently published
Student Learning Experience and Student Retention Strategies: A Transformative Approach to Quality Education
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on quality education emphasizes that reducing disparities and inequalities related to the provision of primary, secondary, and tertiary education. Generally, the higher education institutions are using both business and corporate-level strategies to reach out to face-to-face, blended, and online learning students. Against this backdrop, this study argues that to increase student retention rates in the higher education institutions, and provide higher education that enables individuals to become lifelong learners, the following retention strategies can be implemented– (1) Academic Support Programs, (2) Provision of Capable Resources, (3) high quality of instruction delivery, (4) Provision of scholarships and subsidizing higher education fees
Implications of migrating and ageing populations for inclusion and equality in higher education and lifelong learning
