Adoption of Certified Organic Production: Evidence from Mexico
Adoption of organic production and subsequent entry into the organic market is examined using Mexican avocado producers as a case study. Probit analysis of a sample of 183 small-scale (<15ha) producers from MichoacĂĄn suggests that adoption is positively influenced by management and economic factors (e.g. production costs per hectare and making inputs), but also by social factors (e.g. membership of a producersâ association). Experience in agriculture has a significant but negative effect. Effective policy design must be therefore be aware of both the economic and social complexities surrounding adoption decisions
Are Some Natural Environments More Psychologically Beneficial Than Others? The Importance of Type and Quality on Connectedness to Nature and Psychological Restoration
Exposure to nature can strengthen an individualâs sense of connectedness (i.e., emotional/cognitive bonds to the natural world) and enhance psychological restoration (e.g., feeling relaxed/refreshed). To date, there have been few large studies looking at the role that type and quality of natural environments may have on these outcomes. The present study used data from a large survey in England (sample analyzed = 4,515), which asked participants to recall a recent visit to nature. After controlling for covariates, respondents recalled greater connectedness to nature and restoration following visits to rural and coastal locations compared with urban green space, and to sites of higher environmental quality (operationalized by protected/designated area status, for example, nature reserves). A series of structural equation analyses provided evidence for a bidirectional association between connectedness and restoration. Consideration of the psychological benefits associated with different types and quality of environment has implications for human health, environmental management, and conservation
Charting the course for a Blue Economy in Peru: A Research Agenda
Ocean- and coastal-based economic activities are increasingly recognised as key drivers for supporting global economies. This move towards the âblue economyâ is becoming globally widespread, with the recognition that if ocean-based activities are to be sustainable, they will need to move beyond solely extractive and exploitative endeavours, aligning more closely with marine conservation and effective marine spatial planning. In this paper we define the âblue economyâ as a âplatform for strategic, integrated and participatory coastal and ocean development and protection that incorporates a low carbon economy, the ecosystem approach and human well-being through advancing regional industries, services and activitiesâ. In Peru, while the seas contribute greatly to the national economy, the full potential of the blue economy has yet to be realised. This paper presents the findings of an early career scientist workshop in Lima, Peru, in March 2016. The workshop âAdvancing Green Growth in Peruâ brought together researchers to identify challenges and opportunities for green growth across three Peruvian economic sectorsâtourism, transport and the blue economy with this paper exploring in detail the priorities generated from the âblue economyâ stream. These priorities include themes such as marine spatial planning, detailed evaluations of existing maritime industries (e.g. guano collection and fisheries), development of an effective MPA network, support for sustainable coastal tourism, and better inclusion of social science disciplines in understanding societal and political support for a Peruvian blue economy. In addition, the paper discusses the research requirements associated with these priorities. While not a comprehensive list, these priorities provide a starting point for future dialogue on a co-ordinated scientific platform supporting the blue growth agenda in Peru, and in other regions working towards a successful âblue economyâ
The value of blue-space recreation and perceived water quality across Europe: A contingent behaviour study
This study estimates the value of recreational visits to blue-space sites across 14 EU Member States, representing 78% of the Union's population. Across all countries surveyed, respondents made an average of 47 blue-space visits per person per year. Employing travel cost and contingent behaviour methods, the value of a visit is estimated at âŹ41.32 which adds up to a recreational value of âŹ631bn per year for the total adult population surveyed. Using the Bathing Water Directive's water quality designation, the analysis shows that a one-level improvement in water quality leads to 3.13 more visits (+6.67%), whereas a one-level deterioration leads to 9.77 fewer annual visits (â20.83%). This study provides valuations of benefits of recreation and changes of recreational values due to changes in surface water quality, which can be compared to the implementation and monitoring costs of efforts under the EU's Bathing Water, Water Framework and Marine Strategy Framework Directives
Lyme Bay-a case study: measuring recovery of benthic species, assessing potential spill-over effects and socio-economic changes
On 11th July 2008, 10% of Lyme Bay was declared a Marine Protected area and permanently closed off to scallop dredging and bottom trawling. This project aims to monitor the effects of the MPA, specifically to quantify the recovery of benthic communities using a number of focal/indicator species; to quantify and assess any potential affects to the scallop population; & to assess any socio-economic consequences of the closure and associated activity restrictions.
The project will be used to assess the effectiveness of marine protected areas in achieving conservation objectives; the socio-economic implications of MPAs; and provide further detail on where fisheries management and conservation objectives could be integrated
