Use of FBG optical sensors for structural health monitoring: Practical application
This paper describes the development of FBG Optical sensors for their practical application on structural health monitoring. The sensors were installed on the Tsing Ma Bridge for a trial run. The results using FBG sensors were in excellent agreement with those acquired by the bridge WASHMS
Evaluation on the Effects of Deicing Chemicals on Soil and Water Environment
AbstractDeicing chemicals are widely used to clear the pavement snow in the cold areas of China and many other countries in winter, because of their simple operation and excellent snow-melting effect, which leads to more convenience for traffic and low probability of traffic accident in the city, especially in metropolis. However, with the ever-growing application of deicing chemicals, their negative effects on environment such as soil and water system increased dramatically. Based on the related researches in China and abroad, this paper summarized the two categories of deicing chemicals and their working principles, and then provided the unique characteristics of deicing chemicals’ effects on soil and water environment in large cities, which may need considerable quantity of the chemicals to relieve traffic congestion. What's more, main aspects of impacts by deicing chemicals on regional soil and water environment and the fundamental factors related to the aspects above respectively were generalized, in order to propose a conceptual model to evaluate the harmful effects. Moreover, this paper put forward some suggestions for the further research in this field to fulfill the model, and provided a scientific basis for the pollution prevention of deicing chemicals on urban environment
Detecting the intermediate-mass Higgs boson through the associate production channel pp --> t + anti-t + H + X
We examine the detection of the intermediate-mass Higgs boson (IMH) at LHC
through the associate production channel pp-->t+(anti-t)+H+X-->l+photon+
photon+X'. It is shown that by applying kinematic cuts or b-tagging on the
final state jets, the main backgrounds of W(-->l+nu)+photon+photon+(n-jet) can
be reduced substantially without significant loss of signals. It is possible to
detect the Higgs boson at LHC through the pp-->t+(anti-t)+H+X channel using a
modest photon detector with mass resolution of about 3% of the photon pair

The role of robotics in computer controlled polishing of large and small optics
Following formal acceptance by ESO of three 1.4m hexagonal off-axis prototype mirror segments, one circular segment, and certification of our optical test facility, we turn our attention to the challenge of segment mass-production. In this paper, we focus on the role of industrial robots, highlighting complementarity with Zeeko CNC polishing machines, and presenting results using robots to provide intermediate processing between CNC grinding and polishing. We also describe the marriage of robots and Zeeko machines to automate currently manual operations; steps towards our ultimate vision of fully autonomous manufacturing cells, with impact throughout the optical manufacturing community and beyond
Wave Height Transformation and Set-up Between A Submerged Permeable Breakwater and A Seawall
In this study, we investigated wave transformation and wave set-up between a submerged permeable breakwater and a seawall. Modified time-dependent mild-slope equations, which involve parameters of the porous medium, were used to calculate the wave height transformation and the mean water level change around a submerged breakwater. The numerical solution is verified with experimental data. The simulated results show that modulations of the wave profile and wave set-up are clearly observed between the submerged breakwater and the seawall. In contrast to cases without a seawall, the node or pseudo-node of wave height evolution can be found between the submerged breakwater and the seawall. Higher wave set-up occurs if the nodal or pseudo-nodal point appears near the submerged breakwater. Charmless Decays Based on the six-quark Effective Hamiltonian with Strong Phase Effects II
We provide a systematic study of charmless decays (
and denote pseudoscalar and vector mesons, respectively) based on an
approximate six-quark operator effective Hamiltonian from QCD. The calculation
of the relevant hard-scattering kernels is carried out, the resulting
transition form factors are consistent with the results of QCD sum rule
calculations. By taking into account important classes of power corrections
involving "chirally-enhanced" terms and the vertex corrections as well as weak
annihilation contributions with non-trivial strong phase, we present
predictions for the branching ratios and CP asymmetries of decays into
PP, PV and VV final states, and also for the corresponding polarization
observables in VV final states. It is found that the weak annihilation
contributions with non-trivial strong phase have remarkable effects on the
observables in the color-suppressed and penguin-dominated decay modes. In
addition, we discuss the SU(3) flavor symmetry and show that the symmetry
relations are generally respected
Mutational Analysis of Splicing Activities of Ribonucleotide Reductase alpha Subunit Protein from Lytic Bacteriophage P1201
A CP1201 RIR1 intein is found in the ribonucleotide reductase alpha subunit (RNR alpha subunit) protein of lytic bacteriophage P1201 from Corynebacterium glutamicum NCHU 87078. This intein can be over-expressed and spliced in Escherichia coli NovaBlue cells. Mutations of C539, the N-terminal residue of the C-extein in the CP1201 RIR1 protein, led to the changes of pattern and level of protein-splicing activities. A G392S variant was found to be a temperature-sensitive protein with complete splicing activity at 17 and 28 degrees C but not at 37 degrees C or higher. We also found that the cleavage at the CP1201 RIR1 intein C-terminus of the double mutant G392S/C539G was blocked, but other cleavage activities could be efficiently performed at 17 degrees C. G392S/C539G variant possessed the properties of low-temperature-induced cleavage at the intein N-terminus
B_c meson rare decays in the light-cone quark model
We investigate the rare decays
and in the framework of the
light-cone quark model (LCQM). The transition form factors are calculated in
the space-like region and then analytically continued to the time-like region
via exponential parametrization. The branching ratios and longitudinal lepton
polarization asymmetries (LPAs) for the two decays are given and compared with
each other. The results are helpful to investigating the structure of
meson and to testing the unitarity of CKM quark mixing matrix. All these

Long-distant contribution and radiative decays to light vector meson
The discrepancy between the PQCD calculation and the CLEO data for
() stimulates our interest in
exploring extra mechanism of decay. In this work, we apply an
important non-perturbative QCD effect, i.e., hadronic loop mechanism, to study
radiative decay. Our numerical result shows that the
theoretical results including the hadronic loop contribution and the PQCD
calculation of are consistent with the corresponding
CLEO data of . We expect further experimental
measurement of at BES-III, which will be helpful to
