    Nutritive value of fish of Lake Tanganyika [part] I: Amino acid composition

    The amino acid composition was determined of three economic important fish species of Lake Tanganyika, representing 95% of the tolal catch:Stolothrissa tanganicae Regan, Limnothrissa miodon Boulenger and Luciolates stapersii Boulenger. The analysis of the whole sun dried fish indicate that, compared with Tilapia macrochir, beef and the whole hen's egg, the fish is of a very high nutritive value. The free amino acids in the dried fish count for an average of 11 %, indicating the degree of auteolysis

    Impurity Energy Level Within The Haldane Gap

    An impurity bond Jâ€ČJ{'} in a periodic 1D antiferromagnetic, spin 1 chain with exchange JJ is considered. Using the numerical density matrix renormalization group method, we find an impurity energy level in the Haldane gap, corresponding to a bound state near the impurity bond. When Jâ€Č<JJ{'}<J the level changes gradually from the edge of the Haldane gap to the ground state energy as the deviation dev=(J−Jâ€Č)/Jdev=(J-J{'})/J changes from 0 to 1. It seems that there is no threshold. Yet, there is a threshold when Jâ€Č>JJ{'}>J. The impurity level appears only when the deviation dev=(Jâ€Č−J)/Jâ€Čdev=(J{'}-J)/J{'} is greater than BcB_{c}, which is near 0.3 in our calculation.Comment: Latex file,9 pages uuencoded compressed postscript including 4 figure

    Third Neighbor Correlators of Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

    We exactly evaluate the third neighbor correlator and all the possible non-zero correlators <S^{alpha}_j S^{beta}_{j+1} S^{gamma}_{j+2} S^{delta}_{j+3}> of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXXXXX antiferromagnet in the ground state without magnetic field. All the correlators are expressed in terms of certain combinations of logarithm ln2, the Riemann zeta function zeta(3), zeta(5) with rational coefficients. The results accurately coincide with the numerical ones obtained by the density-matrix renormalization group method and the numerical diagonalization.Comment: 4 page

    A Monte Carlo Study of Correlations in Quantum Spin Ladders

    We study antiferromagnetic spin--1/2 Heisenberg ladders, comprised of ncn_c chains (2≀nc≀62 \leq n_c \leq 6) with ratio J⊄/J∄J_{\bot}/J_{\|} of inter-- to intra--chain couplings. From measurements of the correlation function we deduce the correlation length Ο(T)\xi(T). For even ncn_c, the static structure factor exhibits a peak at a temperature below the corresponding spin gap. Results for isotropically coupled ladders (J⊄/J∄=1J_{\bot}/J_{\|} = 1) are compared to those for the single chain and the square lattice. For J⊄/J∄≀0.5J_{\bot}/J_{\|} \leq 0.5, the correlation function of the two--chain ladder is in excellent agreement with analytic results from conformal field theory, and Ο(T)\xi(T) exhibits simple scaling behavior.Comment: 4 pages, 5 EPS figures, submitted to Phys.     Observation of Parity Violation in the Omega-minus -> Lambda + K-minus Decay

    The alpha decay parameter in the process Omega-minus -> Lambda + K-minus has been measured from a sample of 4.50 million unpolarized Omega-minus decays recorded by the HyperCP (E871) experiment at Fermilab and found to be [1.78 +/- 0.19(stat) +/- 0.16(syst)]{\times}10^{-2}. This is the first unambiguous evidence for a nonzero alpha decay parameter, and hence parity violation, in the Omega-minus -> Lambda + K-minus decay.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

    Phase Separation Based on U(1) Slave-boson Functional Integral Approach to the t-J Model

    We investigate the phase diagram of phase separation for the hole-doped two dimensional system of antiferromagnetically correlated electrons based on the U(1) slave-boson functional integral approach to the t-J model. We show that the phase separation occurs for all values of J/t, that is, whether 0<J/t<10 < J/t < 1 or J/t≄1J/t \geq 1 with J, the Heisenberg coupling constant and t, the hopping strength. This is consistent with other numerical studies of hole-doped two dimensional antiferromagnets. The phase separation in the physically interesting J region, 0<J/tâ‰Č0.40 < J/t \lesssim 0.4 is examined by introducing hole-hole (holon-holon) repulsive interaction. We find from this study that with high repulsive interaction between holes the phase separation boundary tends to remain robust in this low JJ region, while in the high J region, J/t > 0.4, the phase separation boundary tends to disappear.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys.     Friedel oscillations in a two-band Hubbard model for CuO chains

    Friedel oscillations induced by open boundary conditions in a two-band Hubbard model for CuO chains are numerically studied. We find that for physically realistic parameters and close to quarter filling, these oscillations have a 2k_F modulation according with experimental results on YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}. In addition, we predict that, for the same parameters, as hole doping is reduced from quarter filling to half filling, Friedel oscillations would acquire a 4k_F modulation, typical of a strongly correlated electrons regime. The 4k_F modulation dominates also in the electron doped region. The range of parameters varied is very broad, and hence the results reported could apply to other cuprates and other strongly correlated compounds with quasi-one dimensional structures. On a more theoretical side, we stress the fact that the copper and oxygen subsystems should be described by two different Luttinger liquid exponents.Comment: 7 pages, 7 eps figure

    Direct observation of the effective bending moduli of a fluid membrane: Free-energy cost due to the reference-plane deformations

    Effective bending moduli of a fluid membrane are investigated by means of the transfer-matrix method developed in our preceding paper. This method allows us to survey various statistical measures for the partition sum. The role of the statistical measures is arousing much attention, since Pinnow and Helfrich claimed that under a suitable statistical measure, that is, the local mean curvature, the fluid membranes are stiffened, rather than softened, by thermal undulations. In this paper, we propose an efficient method to observe the effective bending moduli directly: We subjected a fluid membrane to a curved reference plane, and from the free-energy cost due to the reference-plane deformations, we read off the effective bending moduli. Accepting the mean-curvature measure, we found that the effective bending rigidity gains even in the case of very flexible membrane (small bare rigidity); it has been rather controversial that for such non-perturbative regime, the analytical prediction does apply. We also incorporate the Gaussian-curvature modulus, and calculated its effective rigidity. Thereby, we found that the effective Gaussian-curvature modulus stays almost scale-invariant. All these features are contrasted with the results under the normal-displacement measure

    Fractional S^z excitation and its bound state around the 1/3 plateau of the S=1/2 Ising-like zigzag XXZ chain

    We present the microscopic view for the excitations around the 1/3 plateau state of the Ising-like zigzag XXZ chain. We analyze the low-energy excitations around the plateau with the degenerating perturbation theory from the Ising limit, combined with the Bethe-form wave function. We then find that the domain-wall particles carrying Sz=±1/3S^z=\pm 1/3 and its bound state of Sz=±2/3S^z=\pm 2/3 describe well the low-energy excitations around the 1/3 plateau state. The formation of the bound state of the domain-walls clearly provides the microscopic mechanism of the cusp singularities and the even-odd behavior in the magnetization curve.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figure

    HyperCP: A high-rate spectrometer for the study of charged hyperon and kaon decays

    The HyperCP experiment (Fermilab E871) was designed to search for rare phenomena in the decays of charged strange particles, in particular CP violation in Ξ\Xi and Λ\Lambda hyperon decays with a sensitivity of 10−410^{-4}. Intense charged secondary beams were produced by 800 GeV/c protons and momentum-selected by a magnetic channel. Decay products were detected in a large-acceptance, high-rate magnetic spectrometer using multiwire proportional chambers, trigger hodoscopes, a hadronic calorimeter, and a muon-detection system. Nearly identical acceptances and efficiencies for hyperons and antihyperons decaying within an evacuated volume were achieved by reversing the polarities of the channel and spectrometer magnets. A high-rate data-acquisition system enabled 231 billion events to be recorded in twelve months of data-taking.Comment: 107 pages, 45 Postscript figures, 14 tables, Elsevier LaTeX, submitted to Nucl.
