    Insecticide-treated bednets for the prevention of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Cambodia: a cluster-randomized trial.

    OBJECTIVES: To validate and quantify the impact of insecticide-treated bednets (ITN) on malaria morbidity and mortality in Cambodia. METHODS: A paired, cluster-randomized trial of ITN was conducted in Rattanakiri, North East Cambodia. Thirty-four villages with a total population of 10,726 were randomized to receive deltamethrin-impregnated bednets or to control (no net provision). Cross-sectional surveys measured Plasmodium falciparum prevalence at baseline and 10 months after ITN distribution. Village malaria volunteers in control and intervention villages treated dipstick-positive P. falciparum cases with artesunate and mefloquine. The resulting passive surveillance data were used as an estimate of the incidence of clinical P. falciparum infections. RESULTS: There was a protective efficacy of 28% in P. falciparum incidence (adjusted rate ratio 0.72, 95% CI 0.47-1.08) and 9% in P. falciparum prevalence (adjusted prevalence ratio 0.91, 95% CI 0.65-1.28) in ITN relative to control villages; however, neither of these estimates reached statistical significance. Individual-level analysis indicated a greater reduction in P. falciparum prevalence among under 5-year-olds (adjusted OR = 0.63, 95% CI 0.26-1.53) compared to older individuals (interaction P = 0.042). The protective efficacy of 35% (95% CI -28, 67%) with respect to clinical P. falciparum incidence in under 5-year-olds was more pronounced than the corresponding estimates for prevalence but was again not significant. CONCLUSIONS: Lack of statistical significance in the results is likely to be due to a lack of power. The analysis provides further evidence for ITN effectiveness in South East Asia, particularly among individuals under 5 years of age

    How reversible is sea ice loss?

    It is well accepted that increasing atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> results in global warming, leading to a decline in polar sea ice area. Here, the specific question of whether there is a tipping point in the sea ice cover is investigated. The global climate model HadCM3 is used to map the trajectory of sea ice area under idealised scenarios. The atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> is first ramped up to four times pre-industrial levels (4 × CO<sub>2</sub>), then ramped down to pre-industrial levels. We also examine the impact of stabilising climate at 4 × CO<sub>2</sub> prior to ramping CO<sub>2</sub> down to pre-industrial levels. Against global mean temperature, Arctic sea ice area is reversible, while the Antarctic sea ice shows some asymmetric behaviour – its rate of change slower, with falling temperatures, than its rate of change with rising temperatures. However, we show that the asymmetric behaviour is driven by hemispherical differences in temperature change between transient and stabilisation periods. We find no irreversible behaviour in the sea ice cover

    Lithiation of InSb and Cu2_2Sb : A Theoretical Investigation

    In this work the mechanism of Li insertion/intercalation in the anode materials InSb and Cu2_2Sb is investigated by means of the first principles total energy calculations. The total charge densities for the lithiated products of the two compounds are presented. Based on these results the change in the bonding character on lithiation is discussed. Further, the isomer shift for InSb and Cu2_2Sb and there various lithiated products is reported. The average insertion/intercalation voltage and volume expansion for transitions from InSb to Li2_2InSb and Cu2_2Sb to Li2_2CuSb are calculated and found to be in good agreement with the experimental values. These findings help to resolve the controversy regarding the lithiation mechanism in InSb.Comment: 5 pages 3 figure

    Polymer and Fock representations for a Scalar field

    In loop quantum gravity, matter fields can have support only on the `polymer-like' excitations of quantum geometry, and their algebras of observables and Hilbert spaces of states can not refer to a classical, background geometry. Therefore, to adequately handle the matter sector, one has to address two issues already at the kinematic level. First, one has to construct the appropriate background independent operator algebras and Hilbert spaces. Second, to make contact with low energy physics, one has to relate this `polymer description' of matter fields to the standard Fock description in Minkowski space.     A dynamical systems approach to the tilted Bianchi models of solvable type

    We use a dynamical systems approach to analyse the tilting spatially homogeneous Bianchi models of solvable type (e.g., types VIh_h and VIIh_h) with a perfect fluid and a linear barotropic γ\gamma-law equation of state. In particular, we study the late-time behaviour of tilted Bianchi models, with an emphasis on the existence of equilibrium points and their stability properties. We briefly discuss the tilting Bianchi type V models and the late-time asymptotic behaviour of irrotational Bianchi VII0_0 models. We prove the important result that for non-inflationary Bianchi type VIIh_h models vacuum plane-wave solutions are the only future attracting equilibrium points in the Bianchi type VIIh_h invariant set. We then investigate the dynamics close to the plane-wave solutions in more detail, and discover some new features that arise in the dynamical behaviour of Bianchi cosmologies with the inclusion of tilt. We point out that in a tiny open set of parameter space in the type IV model (the loophole) there exists closed curves which act as attracting limit cycles. More interestingly, in the Bianchi type VIIh_h models there is a bifurcation in which a set of equilibrium points turn into closed orbits. There is a region in which both sets of closed curves coexist, and it appears that for the type VIIh_h models in this region the solution curves approach a compact surface which is topologically a torus.Comment: 29 page

    Fermi-Lat and WMAP Observations of the Puppis a Supernova Remnant

    We report the detection of GeV gamma-ray emission from the supernova remnant Puppis A with the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope. Puppis A is among the faintest supernova remnants yet detected at GeV energies, with a luminosity of only 2.710(exp 34) (D/2.2 kpc)(exp 2) erg s(exp 1) between 1 and 100 GeV. The gamma-ray emission from the remnant is spatially extended, with a morphology matching that of the radio and X-ray emission, and is well described by a simple power law with an index of 2.1. We attempt to model the broadband spectral energy distribution, from radio to gamma-rays, using standard nonthermal emission mechanisms. To constrain the relativistic electron population we use 7 years of WMAP data to extend the radio spectrum up to 93 GHz. Both leptonic and hadronic dominated models can reproduce the nonthermal spectral energy distribution, requiring a total content of cosmic ray (CR) electrons and protons accelerated in Puppis A of at least WCR is approx. (1 - 5)10 (exp 49) erg

    We study the asymptotic behaviour of the Bianchi type VI0_0 universes with a tilted γ\gamma-law perfect fluid. The late-time attractors are found for the full 7-dimensional state space and for several interesting invariant subspaces. In particular, it is found that for the particular value of the equation of state parameter, γ=6/5\gamma=6/5, there exists a bifurcation line which signals a transition of stability between a non-tilted equilibrium point to an extremely tilted equilibrium point.     RELEASE: A High-level Paradigm for Reliable Large-scale Server Software

    Erlang is a functional language with a much-emulated model for building reliable distributed systems. This paper outlines the RELEASE project, and describes the progress in the first six months. The project aim is to scale the Erlang’s radical concurrency-oriented programming paradigm to build reliable general-purpose software, such as server-based systems, on massively parallel machines. Currently Erlang has inherently scalable computation and reliability models, but in practice scalability is constrained by aspects of the language and virtual machine. We are working at three levels to address these challenges: evolving the Erlang virtual machine so that it can work effectively on large scale multicore systems; evolving the language to Scalable Distributed (SD) Erlang; developing a scalable Erlang infrastructure to integrate multiple, heterogeneous clusters. We are also developing state of the art tools that allow programmers to understand the behaviour of massively parallel SD Erlang programs. We will demonstrate the effectiveness of the RELEASE approach using demonstrators and two large case studies on a Blue Gene

    It is known that all spatially homogeneous solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations in four dimensions which exist for an infinite proper time towards the future are future geodesically complete. This paper investigates whether the analogous statement holds in higher dimensions. A positive answer to this question is obtained for a large class of models which can be studied with the help of Kaluza-Klein reduction to solutions of the Einstein-scalar field equations in four dimensions. The proof of this result makes use of a criterion for geodesic completeness which is applicable to more general spatially homogeneous models.Comment: 18 page
