    Evaluation of Cyclic Behavior of Aircraft Turbine Disk Alloys

    An evaluation of the cyclic behavior of three aircraft engine turbine disk materials was conducted to compare their relative crack initiation and crack propagation resistance. The disk alloys investigated were Inconel 718, hot isostatically pressed and forged powder metallurgy Rene '95, and as-hot-isostatically pressed Rene '95. The objective was to compare the hot isostatically pressed powder metallurgy alloy forms with conventionally processed superalloys as represented by Inconel 718. Cyclic behavior was evaluated at 650 C both under continuously cycling and a fifteen minute tensile hold time cycle to simulate engine conditions. Analysis of the test data were made to evaluate the strain range partitioning and energy exhaustion concepts for predicting hold time effects on low cycle fatigue

    Design and construction of a laboratory system for neuromuscular stimulation of the lower extremities during cycling

    Functional Neuromuscular Stimulation (FNS) is a method by which paralyzed muscles are stimulated electrically in order to produce a useful movement. The design and testing of a laboratory system for the modulated control of the lower extremities during FNS-induced cycling on an exercising device (Paracycle) is described. The system hardware, which is designed around a standard IBM compatible Personal Computer, features six independent stimulation channels. Waveform characteristics such as pulse frequency, width and amplitude are defined as a function of the crank position of the Paracycle for each channel. An extensive software package allows programmability of the waveform parameters and supports the user in the definition of stimulation sequences. The effective performance of the complete FNS-controller/ Paracycle system has been demonstrated during a controlled case study with two paraplegic subjects

    Introducing branded communities in sport for building strong brand relations in social media

    © 2015 Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand. Brand communities have become an important aspect for brand management in social media. However, many brands have failed to establish a successful online brand community. In this study, we introduce branded communities as an alternative concept to brand communities. In contrast to brand communities, a branded community does not revolve around a specific (sport) brand, but around any interest or need. However, a specific brand makes use of the community for marketing purposes by sponsoring or operating the community. We emphasize the suitability of sport as an interest around which branded communities can be built as well as links of branded communities to sport sponsorship. We empirically studied the factors which influence the success of this phenomenon and the effects of operating or sponsoring such a community for a brand by using an online survey (N = 501) of members of a branded online community relating to football. The results demonstrate the relevance of topic interest (i.e., identification and involvement with football) and the quality of the community as determinants of interest in and loyalty towards a branded community. The brand owner benefits from an increase in brand loyalty for those community members who are aware of the brand as the operator of the community, whereby awareness of this sponsorship does not decrease loyalty towards the community. Our research contributes to previous knowledge by proving that branded communities are both an effective means for companies to deploy sponsorship and branding strategies in social media and provide a promising opportunity for sport managers to generate value

    Profitability of Variable Rate Phosphorus in a Two Crop Rotation

    The purpose of this study is to examine the profitability of variable rate phosphorus application on a rotation of rice (Oryza sativa) and soybeans (Glycine max) on fields comprised of clay and silt loam soils. Phosphorus was chosen because 1) farmers have recently been advised of the benefit of phosphorus applications on rice as well as soybeans, 2)recommended phosphorus application rates vary greatly between clay and silt loam soils and across rice and soybeans, and 3) the residual effects of phosphorus applications in a crop rotation affect the appropriateness of variable rate technology (VRT). A three phase simulation, regression and mathematical optimization analysis was conducted to determine within a ten year planning horizon the conditions under which the profitability of variable rate phosphorus applications exceeded the profitability of uniform rate technology. Results showed that in general, VRT is not profitable when fields are comprised of only the three studied silt loam soils. However, VRT was found to be profitable in most cases when even small percentages of clay were added to the soil mixin the field. Adoption will likely also be a function off arm size. Farmers earning relatively small returns to VRT on a small area are not as likely to adopt the technology as larger operations with similar per hectare returns

    Noncommutative spin-1/2 representations

    In this letter we apply the methods of our previous paper hep-th/0108045 to noncommutative fermions. We show that the fermions form a spin-1/2 representation of the Lorentz algebra. The covariant splitting of the conformal transformations into a field-dependent part and a \theta-part implies the Seiberg-Witten differential equations for the fermions.Comment: 7 pages, LaTe
