Positive effective Q12 electrostrictive coefficient in perovskites
It is demonstrated that for classical perovskites such as BaTiO3, SrTiO3 and
PbTiO3 electrostrictive strain induced by an electric field may not obey
traditionally considered "extension along the field, contraction perpendicular
to it" behavior if a sample is cut obliquely to the cubic crystallographic
directions
Swashplate feedback control for tilt-rotor aircraft
Changes in angle of attack in system were sensed indirectly by gages which responded to strains induced in wing structure. Output signals were amplified, filtered, and used to activate swashplate actuators. System provided significant reduction in blade loads and desirable changes in hub forces and moments
A note on palindromic -vectors for certain rational polytopes
Let P be a convex polytope containing the origin, whose dual is a lattice
polytope. Hibi's Palindromic Theorem tells us that if P is also a lattice
polytope then the Ehrhart -vector of P is palindromic. Perhaps less
well-known is that a similar result holds when P is rational. We present an
elementary lattice-point proof of this fact.Comment: 4 page

Green-Function-Based Monte Carlo Method for Classical Fields Coupled to Fermions
Microscopic models of classical degrees of freedom coupled to non-interacting
fermions occur in many different contexts. Prominent examples from solid state
physics are descriptions of colossal magnetoresistance manganites and diluted
magnetic semiconductors, or auxiliary field methods for correlated electron
systems. Monte Carlo simulations are vital for an understanding of such
systems, but notorious for requiring the solution of the fermion problem with
each change in the classical field configuration. We present an efficient,
truncation-free O(N) method on the basis of Chebyshev expanded local Green
functions, which allows us to simulate systems of unprecedented size N.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Wind tunnel test on a 1/4.622 Froude scale, hingeless rotor, tilt rotor model, volume 1
Wing tunnel test data on a 1/4.622 Froude scale, hingeless rotor, tilt rotor mode are reported for all potential flight conditions through hover and a wide envelope of transitions. A mathematical model was used to describe the rotor system in real time simulation by means of regression analyses. Details of the model, test program and data system are provided together with four data files for hover and transition

Tumor angiogenesis and anti-angiogenic therapy in malignant gliomas revisited
The cellular and molecular mechanisms of tumor angiogenesis and its prospects for anti-angiogenic cancer therapy are major issues in almost all current concepts of both cancer biology and targeted cancer therapy. Currently, (1) sprouting angiogenesis, (2) vascular co-option, (3) vascular intussusception, (4) vasculogenic mimicry, (5) bone marrow-derived vasculogenesis, (6) cancer stem-like cell-derived vasculogenesis and (7) myeloid cell-driven angiogenesis are all considered to contribute to tumor angiogenesis. Many of these processes have been described in developmental angiogenesis; however, the relative contribution and relevance of these in human brain cancer remain unclear. Preclinical tumor models support a role for sprouting angiogenesis, vascular co-option and myeloid cell-derived angiogenesis in glioma vascularization, whereas a role for the other four mechanisms remains controversial and rather enigmatic. The anti-angiogenesis drug Avastin (Bevacizumab), which targets VEGF, has become one of the most popular cancer drugs in the world. Anti-angiogenic therapy may lead to vascular normalization and as such facilitate conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy. However, preclinical and clinical studies suggest that anti-VEGF therapy using bevacizumab may also lead to a pro-migratory phenotype in therapy resistant glioblastomas and thus actively promote tumor invasion and recurrent tumor growth. This review focusses on (1) mechanisms of tumor angiogenesis in human malignant glioma that are of particular relevance for targeted therapy and (2) controversial issues in tumor angiogenesis such as cancer stem-like cell-derived vasculogenesis and bone-marrow-derived vasculogenesis
