Preliminary scramjet design for hypersonic airbreathing missile application
A conceptual design study of a scramjet engine was conducted for a hypersonic surface to air missile (HYSAM). The definition of the engine was based upon the requirements of accelerating the HYSAM from Mach 4 at 20,000 feet to Mach 6 at 100,000 feet and the cruise conditions at Mach 6. The resulting external and internal environmental conditions were used by various engineering disciplines performing design, stress and heat transfer analysis. A detailed structural analysis was conducted along with an indepth thermal analysis. Structurally all the components within the system exhibit positive margins of safety. A feasible concept was defined which uses state-of-the-art materials and existing TMC technology. The engine basically consists of a three dimensional carbon/carbon combustor/nozzle secured to an FS-85 columbium inlet. The carbon/carbon liner is sheathed with carbon felt insulation to thermally protect the FS-85 structure and skin. The thermal analysis of the engine indicates that a thermally viable configuration exists

How a Mold Toxin Effects Egg Production
Some twenty years ago farmers in the State of South Dakota while feeding moldy soft com to cattle were curious to use the same feed to their chickens. As per the findings of Indiana workers, a 30% level of molded com was recommended as a feasible inclusion in the layer diet. Today, however, we hesitate to recommend moldy corn because of the fact that problems like hemorrhagic conditions of leg muscles, livers and kidneys and other evidences of toxicity have been traceable to the use of molded feed stuffs. The tragic losses experienced by turkey growers of England in the early 60\u27s were traced to molded peanut meal, shown subsequently to contain aflatoxin, a most powerful poison
Amino Acid Supplementation of Low Protein Layer Diets With Glycine, Glutamic Acid, Threonine and Valine
Previous studies have shown near maximum performance from laying hens when a 16% protein diet diluted to 10% protein with glucose was supplemented with 0.15% DL-methionine, 0.19% L-lysine and 0.04% DL-tryptophan. A supplement of 0.20% DL-isoleucine caused the hens to produce a small but significantly increased number of eggs. Glycine at 0.5% tended to favor the response from Isoleucine, suggesting Its requirement for maximum utilization of amino acids
Amino Acid Supplementation of Low Protein Layer Diets
Previous studies at this experiment station have shown that a typical corn-soy diet diluted with glucose to 9.4% protein and supplemented with 0.19% lysine, 0.25% DL-methionine and 0.04% tryptophane could support about 60% hen-day egg production over a 9-month period. An approach was therefore made to determine which amino acids besides methionine, lysine and tryptophane are further limiting production in this low protein diet
Amino Acid Supplementation of Low Protein Layer Diets
Results of a study reported last year indicated that a low protein (10.8%) com-soy diet supplemented with methionine, lysine, tryptophan and isoleucine could support about 69% hen-day egg production over a 16-week period. Additions of different levels of valine or threonine with isoleucine did not show any marked improvement over the supplementation of isoleucine alone. An approach was therefore made to determine which amino acids besides the above are further limiting production with this low protein diet
Emittance growth in linear induction accelerators
The Dual-Axis Radiographic Hydrotest (DARHT) facility uses bremsstrahlung
radiation source spots produced by the focused electron beams from two linear
induction accelerators (LIAs) to radiograph large hydrodynamic experiments
driven by high explosives. Radiographic resolution is determined by the size of
the source spot, and beam emittance is the ultimate limitation to spot size. On
the DARHT Axis-II LIA we measure an emittance higher than predicted by
theoretical simulations, and even though this axis produces sub-millimeter
source spots, we are exploring ways to improve the emittance. Some of the
possible causes for the discrepancy have been investigated using
particle-in-cell (PIC) codes, although most of these are discounted based on
beam measurements. The most likely source of emittance growth is a mismatch of
the beam to the magnetic transport, which can cause beam halo.Comment: 20th Int. Conf. on High-Power Particle Beams, Washington, DC, May,
