Simulating the effects of decoupled transfer payments using the land use model ProLand

    Get PDF
This paper describes the bio-economic land use model ProLand and presents selected results for scenarios of coupled and fully decoupled Pillar One transfer payments under the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The basic assumption for the model is that land users select the land use alternative from a set of agricultural and silvicultural land use systems which is expected to generate the highest possible land rent. The model is used to estimate effects of fully decoupled transfer payments on land use in a less favoured region in Hesse, Germany. The results confirm that the CAP Reform removes the distorting effects of coupled transfer payments. The extent and direction of land use changes are spatially variant. Overall, the CAP Reform will lead to increases of permanent grassland area at the cost of arable land. The total agricultural land rent generated in the region will grow substantially, mainly due to higher amounts of transfer payments.CAP Reform, land use modelling, decision support, spatial model, ProLand, Agricultural and Food Policy, Land Economics/Use,

    H. C. Andersen’s ‘Schiller Fairy Tale’ and the Post-Romantic Religion of Art

    Get PDF
In his story ‘Den gamle Kirkeklokke’ [‘The Old Church Bell’], Andersen transforms, reinterprets, and dissolves Schiller’s popular poem ‘Das Lied von der Glocke’ [‘The Song of the Bell’] into prose. Written for the Schiller celebrations in 1859, it re-establishes the Romantic cult of the artist under profoundly changed cultural conditions. The article examines Andersen’s complex relationship with the Weimar culture and reveals the hidden autobiographical patters in his Schiller narrative. By adopting Schiller’s role for himself and at the same time linking it to the biography of Thorvaldsen, Andersen manages to bridge the only recently developed national gap between Danish and German culture. He simultaneously arranges the story as a critical commentary on his own Romantic tale ‘Klokken’ [‘The Bell’]. Thus, ‘my Schiller fairy tale’ turns out to be a post-Romantic legend that succeeds Wackenroder’s and Tieck’s outdated ‘religion of art’ in a decidedly ‘prasaic’ mode

    Biogas plant in Järna

    Get PDF
The Biodynamic Research Institute in Järna developed an on-farm biogas plant integrated within the highly self-supporting farm organism, Skilleby-Yttereneby, one of the farms studied in the BERAS project. The biogas plant digests dairy cattle manure and organic residues originating from the farm and the surrounding food processing units

Determinants of Lifetime Unemployment: A Micro Data Analysis with Censored Quantile Regressions

    Get PDF
The empirical literature on unemployment almost exclusively focuses on the duration of distinct unemployment spells. In contrast, we use a large German administrative micro data set for the time span 1975-2004 to investigate individual lifetime unemployment (defined as the total length of all unemployment spells over a 25-year period). This new perspective enables us to answer questions regarding the long-term distribution and determinants of unemployment for West German birth cohorts 1950-1954. We find that lifetime unemployment is highly unevenly distributed and employ censored quantile regressions to show that, for men, pursuing a disadvantageous occupation early in the professional career leads to a significantly higher amount of lifetime unemployment.lifetime unemployment, censored quantile regressions, occupation-specific human capital

Determinants of Lifetime Unemployment - A Micro Data Analysis with Censored Quantile Regressions

Building on a large administrative micro data set for the time span 1975 - 2004 we look at lifetime unemployment for West German birth cohorts 1950 to 1954. Descriptive evidence shows a highly uneven distribution of unemployment in West Germany - more than 60% of the individuals in our sample were not unemployed for a single day over the better part of their professional career while almost half of the total amount of unemployment fell upon 5% of the individuals covered. We employ censored quantile regressions to explain the amount of individual lifetime unemployment. Explanatory variables are either characteristics of the individual (like education), or of the job (like the wage) or the employer (like the size of the firm) early in the professional career. A particular emphasis is placed on the importance of the occupation: we find that for men working in a disadvantageous occupation at age 25 ceteris paribus leads to a signicantly higher amount of lifetime unemployment. Educational attainment or the wage earned at age 25 are also related to the amount of men's lifetime unemployment, amongst others. Some of these variables show very interesting patterns when looking at dierent quantiles. For women results are in general less clear-cut.Lifetime unemployment, Censored-Quantile Regressions, Occupations specific human capital

Biogas from manure – a new technology to close the nutrient and energy circuit on-farm

    Get PDF
The Biodynamic Research Institute in Järna developed a two-phase on-farm biogas plant. The plant digests manure of dairy cattle and organic residues originating from the farm and the surrounding food processing units containing 17.7-19.6 % total solids. A new technology for continuously filling and discharging the hydrolysis reactor was developed and implemented. The output of the hydrolysis reactor is separated into a solid and liquid fraction. The solid fraction is composted. The liquid fraction is further digested in a methane reactor and the effluent used as liquid fertiliser. Initial results show that anaerobic digestion followed by aerobic composting of the solid fraction improves the nutrient balance of the farm compared to mere aerobic composting. Composted solid fraction and effluent together contain about 70.8 % of total input nitrogen and 93.3 % of input NH4. The manure that was merely aerobic digested contained about 51.3 % of total input nitrogen and 3.9 % of input NH4. Additionally anaerobic digestion improves the energy balance of the farm producing up to 269 l biogas kg-1 volatile solids or 1.7 kWh heat kg-1 volatile solids

London and Berlin are not speaking the same language when it comes to EU reform

    Get PDF
The UK and Germany have both expressed a desire to reform the way the EU functions. Almut Möller and Tim Oliver argue that due to their contrasting constitutional traditions and outlooks, the two countries risk misunderstanding or antagonising one another. They point out that the German discussion around EU competences is part of a country-wide debate on federalism, while the UK’s proposition of a competences review is informed by the ideas of Parliamentary sovereignty and the repatriation of power

Bulk properties of light deformed nuclei derived from a medium-modified meson-exchange interaction

    Get PDF
Deformed Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations for finite nuclei are carried out. As residual interaction, a Brueckner G-matrix derived from a meson-exchange potential is taken. Phenomenological medium modifications of the meson masses are introduced. The binding energies, radii, and deformation parameters of the Carbon, Oxygen, Neon, and Magnesium isotope chains are found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX2e, elsart, 4 eps-figures includes with graphic
