Ames collaborative study of cosmic-ray neutrons. 2: Low- and mid-latitude flights
Progress of the study of cosmic ray neutrons is described. Data obtained aboard flights from Hawaii at altitudes of 41,000 and 45,000 feet, and in the range of geomagnetic latitude 17 N less than or equal to lambda less than or equal to 21 N are reported. Study and simulation results for video landmark acquisition and tracking technology (Vilat-2)
The results of several investigations and hardware developments which supported new technology for Earth feature recognition and classification are described. Data analysis techniques and procedures were developed for processing the Feature Identification and Location Experiment (FILE) data. This experiment was flown in November 1981, on the second Shuttle flight and a second instrument, designed for aircraft flights, was flown over the United States in 1981. Ground tests were performed to provide the basis for designing a more advanced version (four spectral bands) of the FILE which would be capable of classifying clouds and snow (and possibly ice) as distinct features, in addition to the features classified in the Shuttle experiment (two spectral bands). Persistence effects in deterministic diffusion
In systems which exhibit deterministic diffusion, the gross parameter
dependence of the diffusion coefficient can often be understood in terms of
random walk models. Provided the decay of correlations is fast enough, one can
ignore memory effects and approximate the diffusion coefficient according to
dimensional arguments. By successively including the effects of one and two
steps of memory on this approximation, we examine the effects of
``persistence'' on the diffusion coefficients of extended two-dimensional
billiard tables and show how to properly account for these effects, using walks
in which a particle undergoes jumps in different directions with probabilities
that depend on where they came from.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
350 Micron Dust Emission from High Redshift Objects
We report observations of a sample of high redshift sources (1.8<z<4.7),
mainly radio-quiet quasars, at 350 microns using the SHARC bolometer camera at
the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory. Nine sources were detected (>4-sigma)
and upper limits were obtained for 11 with 350 micron flux density limits
(3-sigma) in the range 30-125mJy. Combining published results at other
far-infrared and millimeter wavelengths with the present data, we are able to
estimate the temperature of the dust, finding relatively low values, averaging
50K. From the spectral energy distribution, we derive dust masses of a few 10^8
M_sun and luminosities of 4-33x10^{12} L_sun (uncorrected for any
magnification) implying substantial star formation activity. Thus both the
temperature and dust masses are not very different from those of local
ultraluminous infrared galaxies. For this redshift range, the 350 micron
observations trace the 60-100 micron rest frame emission and are thus directly
comparable with IRAS studies of low redshift galaxies.Comment: 5 pages, 2 PS figures. Accepted for publication in Astrophysical

Characterizing the transition from diffuse atomic to dense molecular clouds in the Magellanic clouds with [CII], [CI], and CO
We present and analyze deep Herschel/HIFI observations of the [CII] 158um,
[CI] 609um, and [CI] 370um lines towards 54 lines-of-sight (LOS) in the Large
and Small Magellanic clouds. These observations are used to determine the
physical conditions of the line--emitting gas, which we use to study the
transition from atomic to molecular gas and from C^+ to C^0 to CO in their low
metallicity environments. We trace gas with molecular fractions in the range
0.1<f(H2)<1, between those in the diffuse H2 gas detected by UV absorption
(f(H2)<0.2) and well shielded regions in which hydrogen is essentially
completely molecular. The C^0 and CO column densities are only measurable in
regions with molecular fractions f(H2)>0.45 in both the LMC and SMC. Ionized
carbon is the dominant gas-phase form of this element that is associated with
molecular gas, with C^0 and CO representing a small fraction, implying that
most (89% in the LMC and 77% in the SMC) of the molecular gas in our sample is
CO-dark H2. The mean X_CO conversion factors in our LMC and SMC sample are
larger than the value typically found in the Milky Way. When applying a
correction based on the filling factor of the CO emission, we find that the
values of X_CO in the LMC and SMC are closer to that in the Milky Way. The
observed [CII] intensity in our sample represents about 1% of the total
far-infrared intensity from the LOSs observed in both Magellanic Clouds.Comment: 32 pages, 21 figures, Accepted to Ap
Mode mixing and losses in misaligned microcavities
We present a study on the optical losses of Fabry-P\'erot cavities subject to
realistic transverse mirror misalignment. We consider mirrors of the two most
prevalent surface forms: idealised spherical depressions, and Gaussian profiles
generated by laser ablation. We first describe the mode mixing phenomena seen
in the spherical mirror case and compare to the frequently-used clipping model,
observing close agreement in the predicted diffraction loss, but with the
addition of protective mode mixing at transverse degeneracies. We then discuss
the Gaussian mirror case, detailing how the varying surface curvature across
the mirror leads to complex variations in round trip loss and mode profile. In
light of the severe mode distortion and strongly elevated loss predicted for
many cavity lengths and transverse alignments when using Gaussian mirrors, we
suggest that the consequences of mirror surface profile are carefully
considered when designing cavity experiments.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figure
