New results in rho^0 meson physics
We compare the predictions of a range of existing models based on the Vector
Meson Dominance hypothesis with data on e^+ e^- -> pi^+ pi^$ and e^+ e^- ->
mu^+ mu^- cross-sections and the phase and near-threshold behavior of the
timelike pion form factor, with the aim of determining which (if any) of these
models is capable of providing an accurate representation of the full range of
experimental data. We find that, of the models considered, only that proposed
by Bando et al. is able to consistently account for all information, provided
one allows its parameter "a" to vary from the usual value of 2 to 2.4. Our fit
with this model gives a point-like coupling (gamma pi^+ \pi^-) of magnitude ~
-e/6, while the common formulation of VMD excludes such a term. The resulting
values for the rho mass and pi^+ pi^- and e^+e^- partial widths as well as the
branching ratio for the decay omega -> pi^+ pi^- obtained within the context of

The Computational Power of Optimization in Online Learning
We consider the fundamental problem of prediction with expert advice where
the experts are "optimizable": there is a black-box optimization oracle that
can be used to compute, in constant time, the leading expert in retrospect at
any point in time. In this setting, we give a novel online algorithm that
attains vanishing regret with respect to experts in total
computation time. We also give a lower bound showing
that this running time cannot be improved (up to log factors) in the oracle
model, thereby exhibiting a quadratic speedup as compared to the standard,
oracle-free setting where the required time for vanishing regret is
. These results demonstrate an exponential gap between
the power of optimization in online learning and its power in statistical
learning: in the latter, an optimization oracle---i.e., an efficient empirical
risk minimizer---allows to learn a finite hypothesis class of size in time
. We also study the implications of our results to learning in
repeated zero-sum games, in a setting where the players have access to oracles
that compute, in constant time, their best-response to any mixed strategy of
their opponent. We show that the runtime required for approximating the minimax
value of the game in this setting is , yielding
again a quadratic improvement upon the oracle-free setting, where
is known to be tight
Monte Carlo Simulations for Ghost Imaging Based on Scattered Photons
X-ray based imaging modalities are widely used in research, industry, and in
the medical field. Consequently, there is a strong motivation to improve their
performances with respect to resolution, dose, and contrast. Ghost imaging (GI)
is an imaging technique in which the images are reconstructed from measurements
with a single-pixel detector using correlation between the detected intensities
and the intensity structures of the input beam. The method that has been
recently extended to X-rays provides intriguing possibilities to overcome
several fundamental challenges of X-ray imaging. However, understanding the
potential of the method and designing X-ray GI systems pose challenges since in
addition to geometric optic effects, radiation-matter interactions must be
considered. Such considerations are fundamentally more complex than those at
longer wavelengths as relativistic effects such as Compton scattering become
significant. In this work we present a new method for designing and
implementing GI systems using the particle transport code FLUKA, that rely on
Monte Carlo (MC) sampling. This new approach enables comprehensive
consideration of the radiation-matter interactions, facilitating successful
planning of complex GI systems. As an example of an advanced imaging system, we
simulate a high-resolution scattered photons GI technique
The time to extinction for an SIS-household-epidemic model
We analyse a stochastic SIS epidemic amongst a finite population partitioned
into households. Since the population is finite, the epidemic will eventually
go extinct, i.e., have no more infectives in the population. We study the
effects of population size and within household transmission upon the time to
extinction. This is done through two approximations. The first approximation is
suitable for all levels of within household transmission and is based upon an
Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process approximation for the diseases fluctuations about an
endemic level relying on a large population. The second approximation is
suitable for high levels of within household transmission and approximates the
number of infectious households by a simple homogeneously mixing SIS model with
the households replaced by individuals. The analysis, supported by a simulation
study, shows that the mean time to extinction is minimized by moderate levels
of within household transmission
Ultrafast Deflection of Spatial Solitons in AlGaAs Slab Waveguides
We demonstrate ultrafast all-optical deflection of spatial solitons in an
AlGaAs slab waveguide using 190 fs, 1550 nm pulses which are used to generate
and deflect the spatial soliton. The steering beam is focused onto the top of
the waveguide near the soliton pathway and the soliton is steered due to
refractive index changes induced by optical Kerr, or free carrier (Drude)
effects. Angular deflections up to 8 mR are observed.Comment: accept. for publ. in Optics Letter
Exclusive Measurements of pp -> dpi+pi0: Double-Pionic Fusion without ABC Effect
Exclusive measurements of the reaction pp -> dpi+pi0 have been carried out at
T_p = 1.1 GeV at the CELSIUS storage ring using the WASA detector. The
isovector pi+pi0 channel exhibits no enhancement at low invariant pipi masses,
i. e. no ABC effect. The differential distributions are in agreement with the
conventional t-channel Delta-Delta excitation process, which also accounts for
the observed energy dependence of the total cross section. This is an update of
a previously published version -- see important note at the end of the article
On conformal measures and harmonic functions for group extensions
We prove a Perron-Frobenius-Ruelle theorem for group extensions of
topological Markov chains based on a construction of -finite conformal

Sister Mary Joseph's Nodule at a University Teaching Hospital in Northwestern Tanzania: A Retrospective Review of 34 cases.
Sister Mary Joseph's nodule is a metastatic tumor deposit in the umbilicus and often represents advanced intra-abdominal malignancy with dismal prognosis. There is a paucity of published data on this subject in our setting. This study was conducted to describe the clinicopathological presentation and treatment outcome of this condition in our environment and highlight challenges associated with the care of these patients, and to proffer solutions for improved outcome. This was a retrospective study of histologically confirmed cases of Sister Mary Joseph's nodule seen at Bugando Medical Centre between March 2003 and February 2013. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics. A total of 34 patients were enrolled in the study. Males outnumbered females by a ratio of 1.4:1. The vast majority of patients (70.6%) presented with large umbilical nodule > 2 cm in size. The stomach (41.1%) was the most common location of the primary tumor. Adenocarcinoma (88.2%) was the most frequent histopathological type. Most of the primary tumors (52.9%) were poorly differentiated. As the disease was advanced and metastatic in all patients, only palliative therapy was offered. Out of 34 patients, 11 patients died in the hospital giving a mortality rate of 32.4%. Patients were followed up for 24 months. At the end of the follow-up period, 14(60.9%) patients were lost to follow-up and the remaining 9 (39.1%) patients died. Patients survived for a median period of 28 weeks (range, 2 to 64 weeks). The nodule recurred in 6 (26.1%) patients after complete excision. Sister Mary Joseph's nodule of the umbilicus is not rare in our environment and often represents manifestation of a variety of advanced intra-abdominal malignancies. The majority of the patients present at a late stage and many with distant metastases. The patient's survival is very short leading to a poor outcome. Early detection of primary cancer at an early stage may improve the prognosis
