Possible role of 3He impurities in solid 4He
We use a quantum lattice gas model to describe essential aspects of the
motion of 4He atoms and of 3He impurities in solid 4He. This study suggests
that 3He impurities bind to defects and promote 4He atoms to interstitial sites
which can turn the bosonic quantum disordered crystal into a metastable
supersolid. It is suggested that defects and interstitial atoms are produced
during the solid 4He nucleation process where the role of 3He impurities (in
addition to the cooling rate) is known to be important even at very small (1
ppm) impurity concentration. It is also proposed that such defects can form a

Thermal History of Solid 4He Under Oscillation
We have studied the thermal history of the resonant frequency of a torsional
oscillator containing solid 4He. We find that the magnitude of the frequency
shift that occurs below 100 mK is multivalued in the low temperature limit,
with the exact value depending on how the state is prepared. This result can be
qualitatively explained in terms of the motion and pinning of quantized
vortices within the sample. Several aspects of the data are also consistent
with the response of dislocation lines to oscillating stress fields imposed on

A TNF-α Promoter Polymorphism Is Associated with Juvenile Onset Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis
Tumor necrosis factor-α is considered to be one of the important mediators in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. A strong association of juvenile onset psoriasis with the major histocompatibility complex encoded HLA-Cw6 antigen has been reported but it is unclear whether Cw6 itself or a closely linked gene is involved in the pathogenesis. This study has focused on the association of promoter polymorphisms of the major histocompatibility complex encoded tumor necrosis factor-α gene with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Tumor necrosis factor-α promoter polymorphisms were sought by sequence-specific oligonucleotide hybridization and by direct sequencing in Caucasian patients with juvenile onset psoriasis and with psoriatic arthritis and in healthy controls. A mutation at position −238 of the tumor necrosis factor-α promoter was present in 23 of 60 patients (38%; p < 0.0001; Pcorr < 0.008) with juvenile onset psoriasis and in 20 of 62 patients (32%; p < 0.0003; Pcorr < 0.03) with psoriatic arthritis, compared with seven of 99 (7%) Caucasian controls. There was a marked increase of homozygotes for this mutation in the psoriasis group. Another mutation at position −308 was found in similar proportions of patients and controls. Our study shows a strong association of the tumor necrosis factor-α promoter polymorphism at position −238 with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Our findings suggest that this promoter polymorphism itself or a gene in linkage disequilibrium with tumor necrosis factor-α predispose to the development of psoriasis
BCC vs. HCP - The Effect of Crystal Symmetry on the High Temperature Mobility of Solid He
We report results of torsional oscillator (TO) experiments on solid He at
temperatures above 1K. We have previously found that single crystals, once
disordered, show some mobility (decoupled mass) even at these rather high
temperatures. The decoupled mass fraction with single crystals is typically 20-
30%. In the present work we performed similar measurements on polycrystalline
solid samples. The decoupled mass with polycrystals is much smaller, 1%,
similar to what is observed by other groups. In particular, we compared the
properties of samples grown with the TO's rotation axis at different
orientations with respect to gravity. We found that the decoupled mass fraction
of bcc samples is independent of the angle between the rotation axis and
gravity. In contrast, hcp samples showed a significant difference in the
fraction of decoupled mass as the angle between the rotation axis and gravity
was varied between zero and 85 degrees. Dislocation dynamics in the solid

On The Mobile Behavior of Solid He at High Temperatures
We report studies of solid helium contained inside a torsional oscillator, at
temperatures between 1.07K and 1.87K. We grew single crystals inside the
oscillator using commercially pure He and He-He mixtures containing
100 ppm He. Crystals were grown at constant temperature and pressure on the
melting curve. At the end of the growth, the crystals were disordered,
following which they partially decoupled from the oscillator. The fraction of
the decoupled He mass was temperature and velocity dependent. Around 1K, the
decoupled mass fraction for crystals grown from the mixture reached a limiting
value of around 35%. In the case of crystals grown using commercially pure
He at temperatures below 1.3K, this fraction was much smaller. This
difference could possibly be associated with the roughening transition at the
solid-liquid interface.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure
Ground states and dynamics of population-imbalanced Fermi condensates in one dimension
By using the numerically exact density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG)
approach, we investigate the ground states of harmonically trapped
one-dimensional (1D) fermions with population imbalance and find that the
Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) state, which is a condensed state of fermion pairs with
nonzero center-of-mass momentum, is realized for a wide range of parameters.
The phase diagram comprising the two phases of i) an LO state at the trap
center and a balanced condensate at the periphery and ii) an LO state at the
trap center and a pure majority component at the periphery, is obtained. The
reduced two-body density matrix indicates that most of the minority atoms
contribute to the LO-type quasi-condensate. With the time-dependent DMRG, we
also investigate the real-time dynamics of a system of 1D fermions in response

Spin-Imbalance in a One-Dimensional Fermi Gas
Superconductivity and magnetism generally do not coexist. Changing the
relative number of up and down spin electrons disrupts the basic mechanism of
superconductivity, where atoms of opposite momentum and spin form Cooper pairs.
Nearly forty years ago Fulde and Ferrell and Larkin and Ovchinnikov proposed an
exotic pairing mechanism (FFLO) where magnetism is accommodated by formation of
pairs with finite momentum. Despite intense theoretical and experimental
efforts, however, polarized superconductivity remains largely elusive. Here we
report experimental measurements of density profiles of a two spin mixture of
ultracold 6Li atoms trapped in an array of one dimensional (1D) tubes, a system
analogous to electrons in 1D wires. At finite spin imbalance, the system phase
separates with an inverted phase profile in comparison to the three-dimensional
case. In 1D we find a partially polarized core surrounded by wings composed of
either a completely paired BCS superfluid or a fully polarized Fermi gas,
depending on the degree of polarization. Our observations are in quantitative
agreement with theoretical calculations in which the partially polarized phase
is found to be a 1D analogue of the FFLO state. This study demonstrates how
ultracold atomic gases in 1D may be used to create non-trivial new phases of
matter, and also paves the way for direct observation and further study of the
