Periodic and Near-Periodic Structures
Extensive work has been done on the vibration characteristics of perfectly periodic structures. This article reviews the different methods of analysis from several fields of study, for example solid-state physics and civil, mechanical, and aerospace engineering, used to determine the effects of disorder in one-dimensional (1-D) and 2-D periodic structures. In the work examined, disorder has been found to lead to localization in 1-D periodic structures. It is important to understand localization because it causes energy to be concentrated near the disorder and may cause an overestimation of structural damping. The implications of localization for control are also examined
Clinical and cost-effectiveness of internal limiting membrane peeling for patients with idiopathic full thickness macular hole. Protocol for a Randomised Controlled Trial : FILMS (Full-thickness macular hole and Internal Limiting Membrane peeling Study)
Background: A full-thickness macular hole (FTMH) is a common retinal condition associated with impaired vision. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) have demonstrated that surgery, by means of pars plana vitrectomy and post-operative intraocular tamponade with gas, is effective for stage 2, 3 and 4 FTMH. Internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling has been introduced as an additional surgical manoeuvre to increase the success of the surgery; i.e. increase rates of hole closure and visual improvement. However, little robust evidence exists supporting the superiority of ILM peeling compared with no-peeling techniques. The purpose of FILMS (Fullthickness macular hole and Internal Limiting Membrane peeling Study) is to determine whether ILM peeling improves the visual function, the anatomical closure of FTMH, and the quality of life of patients affected by this disorder, and the cost-effectiveness of the surgery.
Methods/Design: Patients with stage 2–3 idiopathic FTMH of less or equal than 18 months duration (based on symptoms reported by the participant) and with a visual acuity ≤ 20/40 in the study eye will be enrolled in this FILMS from eight sites across the UK and Ireland. Participants will be randomised to receive combined cataract surgery (phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation) and pars plana vitrectomy with postoperative intraocular tamponade with gas, with or without ILM peeling. The primary outcome is distance visual acuity at 6 months. Secondary outcomes include distance visual acuity at 3 and 24 months, near visual acuity at 3, 6, and 24 months, contrast sensitivity at 6 months, reading speed at 6 months, anatomical closure of the macular hole at each time point (1, 3, 6, and 24 months), health related quality of life (HRQOL) at six months, costs to the health service and the participant, incremental costs per quality adjusted life year (QALY) and adverse events.
Discussion: FILMS will provide high quality evidence on the role of ILM peeling in FTMH surgery.
Trial registration: This trial is registered with Current Controlled Trials ISRCTN number 33175422 and Clinical Trials.gov identifier NCT00286507.Chief Scientist Office, Scotland (project ref no CZH/4/235), NHS GrampianPeer reviewedPublisher PD
Analysis and modelling of muscles motion during whole body vibration
The aim of the study is to characterize the local muscles motion in individuals undergoing whole body mechanical stimulation. In this study we aim also to evaluate how subject positioning modifies vibration dumping, altering local mechanical stimulus. Vibrations were delivered to subjects by the use of a vibrating platform, while stimulation frequency was increased linearly from 15 to 60Hz. Two different subject postures were here analysed. Platform and muscles motion were monitored using tiny MEMS accelerometers; a contra lateral analysis was also presented. Muscle motion analysis revealed typical displacement trajectories: motion components were found not to be purely sinusoidal neither in phase to each other. Results also revealed a mechanical resonant-like behaviour at some muscles, similar to a second-order system response. Resonance frequencies and dumping factors depended on subject and his positioning. Proper mechanical stimulation can maximize muscle spindle solicitation, which may produce a more effective muscle activation
Space-based research in fundamental physics and quantum technologies
Space-based experiments today can uniquely address important questions
related to the fundamental laws of Nature. In particular, high-accuracy physics
experiments in space can test relativistic gravity and probe the physics beyond
the Standard Model; they can perform direct detection of gravitational waves
and are naturally suited for precision investigations in cosmology and
astroparticle physics. In addition, atomic physics has recently shown
substantial progress in the development of optical clocks and atom
interferometers. If placed in space, these instruments could turn into powerful
high-resolution quantum sensors greatly benefiting fundamental physics.
We discuss the current status of space-based research in fundamental physics,
its discovery potential, and its importance for modern science. We offer a set
of recommendations to be considered by the upcoming National Academy of
Sciences' Decadal Survey in Astronomy and Astrophysics. In our opinion, the
Decadal Survey should include space-based research in fundamental physics as
one of its focus areas. We recommend establishing an Astronomy and Astrophysics
Advisory Committee's interagency ``Fundamental Physics Task Force'' to assess
the status of both ground- and space-based efforts in the field, to identify
the most important objectives, and to suggest the best ways to organize the
work of several federal agencies involved. We also recommend establishing a new
NASA-led interagency program in fundamental physics that will consolidate new
technologies, prepare key instruments for future space missions, and build a
strong scientific and engineering community. Our goal is to expand NASA's
science objectives in space by including ``laboratory research in fundamental
physics'' as an element in agency's ongoing space research efforts.Comment: a white paper, revtex, 27 pages, updated bibliograph
High-intensity interval training improves VO2peak, maximal lactate accumulation, time trial and competition performance in 9–11-year-old swimmers
Training volume in swimming is usually very high when compared to the relatively short competition time. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been demonstrated to improve performance in a relatively short training period. The main purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of a 5-week HIIT versus high-volume training (HVT) in 9–11-year-old swimmers on competition performance, 100 and 2,000 m time (T100 m and T2,000 m), VO2peak and rate of maximal lactate accumulation (Lacmax). In a 5-week crossover study, 26 competitive swimmers with a mean (SD) age of 11.5 ± 1.4 years performed a training period of HIIT and HVT. Competition (P < 0.01; effect size = 0.48) and T2,000 m (P = 0.04; effect size = 0.21) performance increased following HIIT. No changes were found in T100 m (P = 0.20). Lacmax increased following HIIT (P < 0.01; effect size = 0.43) and decreased after HVT (P < 0.01; effect size = 0.51). VO2peak increased following both interventions (P < 0.05; effect sizes = 0.46–0.57). The increases in competition performance, T2,000 m, Lacmax and VO2peak following HIIT were achieved in significantly less training time (~2 h/week)
