Reflective Argumentation
Theories of argumentation usually focus on arguments as means of persuasion, finding consensus, or justifying knowledge claims. However, the construction and visualization of arguments can also be used to clarify one's own thinking and to stimulate change of this thinking if gaps, unjustified assumptions, contradictions, or open questions can be identified. This is what I call "reflective argumentation." The objective of this paper is, first, to clarify the conditions of reflective argumentation and, second, to discuss the possibilities of argument visualization methods in supporting reflection and cognitive change. After a discussion of the cognitive problems we are facing in conflicts--obviously the area where cognitive change is hardest--the second part will, based on this, determine a set of requirements argument visualization tools should fulfill if their main purpose is stimulating reflection and cognitive change. In the third part, I will evaluate available argument visualization methods with regard to these requirements and talk about their limitations. The fourth part, then, introduces a new method of argument visualization which I call Logical Argument Mapping (LAM). LAM has specifically been designed to support reflective argumentation. Since it uses primarily deductively valid argument schemes, this design decision has to be justified with regard to goals of reflective argumentation. The fifth part, finally, provides an example of how Logical Argument Mapping could be used as a method of reflective argumentation in a political controversy
Cloudphysical Parameters in Dependence on Height above Cloud Base in Different Clouds.
On flights with the DLR icing research aircraft the dependence of aircraft icing on cloudphysical parameters was determined; both for aircraft-referred icing and for normalized icing, as well as for various clouds and locations in clouds. This is done with an improvement of icing predicitons in mind. The species of the cloud and the distance from cloud base are called here cloud parameters; while under cloudphysical parameters are understood liquid water content, temperature, particle size distribution and particle phase. Results from four icing flights are discussed, selected from a total of forty vertical soundings. —The results are arranged in four classes: Stratus/cumulus mixed, stratus; with and without precipitation at the ground
Hemodialysis membrane-related neutrophil dysfunctions and pentoxifylline - a pilot study
Hemodialysis treatment is associated with activation of neutrophil granulocytes. Pentoxifylline has been shown to inhibit neutrophil activation in vitro and in vivo. We investigated the effect of pentoxifylline on leukocyte and platelet counts and on plasma levels of extracellularly released neutrophil elastase and lactoferrin during a four-hour hemodialysis treatment. Eight patients received 400 mg of pentoxifylline or placebo orally twice a day over 14 days and an additional dose of 400 mg of pentoxifylline intravenously during hemodialysis. Each subject served as his own control in a randomized, double-blind, cross-over study. Combined oral and intravenous treatment with pentoxifylline prevented neither leukopenia nor neutrophil degranulation during the time interval studied. Elastase plasma levels paralleled the drop in leucocyte counts and thereafter increased similarly in both groups. Lactoferrin plasma levels exhibited less increase in the treated group; however, this effect was not statistically significant. This may be due to the small number of cases studied and to difficulties in reaching effective plasma levels without side effects
Comment on "Secure direct communication with a quantum one-time pad"
In the paper [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{69}, 052319 (2004)], a quantum direct
communication protocol is proposed which is claimed to be unconditionally
secure even for the case of a noisy channel. We show that this is not the case
by giving an undetectable attack scheme
The space laboratory: A European-American cooperative effort
A review of the history of the European participation in the American space shuttle project is presented. Some early work carried out in West Germany on the rocket-powered second state of a reusable launch vehicle system is cited, in particular wind tunnel studies of the aerodynamic and flight-mechanical behavior of various lifting body configurations in the subsonic range. The offer made by the U.S. to Europe of participating in the space shuttle program by developing a reusable launch vehicle is discussed, noting West Germany's good preparation in this area, as well as the ultimate decision of the U.S. to exclude Europe from participation in the design of the Orbiter and the booster stage of the shuttle
The state space of short-range Ising spin glasses: the density of states
The state space of finite square and cubic Ising spin glass models is
analysed in terms of the global and the local density of states. Systems with
uniform and gaussian probability distribution of interactions are compared.
Different measures for the local state density are presented and discussed. In
particular the question whether the local density of states grows exponentially
or not is considered. The direct comparison of global and local densities leads
to consequences for the structure of the state space.Comment: 18 pages (including 6 figures); submitted to Z.f.Physik
