The subtropical global plume in the Pacific Exploratory Mission-Tropics A (PEM-Tropics A), PEM-Tropics B, and the Global Atmospheric Sampling Program (GASP): How tropical emissions affect the remote Pacific
[1] An extended southern subtropical plume of CO meanders>15,000 km around the world, gradually spreading around 20 S. This southern pollution plume is most noticeable in the burning season, southern spring; a similar subtropical plume appears in the northern spring. We use tracer maps to guide the use of trajectories to trace observations of the plume to their origins. The MM5 mesoscale model provides high-resolution, near-global synoptic reconstructions of the weather. Two situations are analyzed: NASA’s airborne Pacific Exploratory Mission-Tropics A (PEM-Tropics A) period, September–October 1996 and the PEM-Tropics B period, March–April 1999. Similar features are noted for a much earlier mission in 1977, which apparently captured the first, but never-recognized, samples of the global pollution of the Southern Hemisphere. For PEM-Tropics A, near-source pieces of the plume are clearly seen in the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) absorbing aerosol product and are well simulated. Downwind, the aircraft sampling of several strands deriving from a single plume seems representative and well simulated. A general mechanism of the plume emerges: The southern plume arises in surface accumulation regions in Africa and Sout
Seroprevalence of Mycoplasma bovis infection in dairy cows in subtropical southern China
The seroprevalence of Mycoplasma bovis infection in dairy cows in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (GZAR) in subtropical southern China was surveyed between June 2009 and March 2010. A total of 455 serum samples of dairy cows were collected from 6 districts in 4 different cities, and examined for M. bovis antibodies with the indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using a commercially available kit. The overall seroprevalence of M. bovis infection in dairy cows was 7.69% (35/455). Three year-old dairy cows had the highest seroprevalence (15.0%), followed by dairy cows of 4 year-old (11.1%). Dairy cows with the history of 5 pregnancies had the highest seroprevalence (33.3%). However, no statistically significant association was found between M. bovis infection and age or number of pregnancies (p > 0.05). All the aborting dairy cows were negative for M. bovis antibodies, suggesting that bovine abortion may have no association with M. bovis infection in GZAR. These results indicate that M. bovis infection in dairy cows was widespread in GZAR, and integrated strategies and measures should be performed to control and prevent M. bovis infection and disease outbreak.Key words: Mycoplasma bovis, seroprevalence, dairy cows, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (GZAR), China, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
Topological mechanochemistry of graphene
In view of a formal topology, two common terms, namely, connectivity and
adjacency, determine the quality of C-C bonds of sp2 nanocarbons. The feature
is the most sensitive point of the inherent topology of the species so that
such external action as mechanical deformation should obviously change it and
result in particular topological effects. The current paper describes the
effects caused by uniaxial tension of a graphene molecule in due course of a
mechanochemical reaction. Basing on the molecular theory of graphene, the
effects are attributed to both mechanical loading and chemical modification of
edge atoms of the molecule. The mechanical behavior is shown to be not only
highly anisotropic with respect to the direction of the load application, but
greatly dependent on the chemical modification of the molecule edge atoms thus
revealing topological character of the graphene deformation.Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. arXiv admin note: text overlap with

On structural properties of the value function for an unbounded jump Markov process with an application to a processor sharing retrial queue
The derivation of structural properties for unbounded jump Markov processes cannot be done using standard mathematical tools, since the analysis is hindered due to the fact that the system is not uniformizable. We present a promising technique, a smoothed rate truncation method, to overcome the limitations of standard techniques and allow for the derivation of structural properties. We introduce this technique by application to a processor sharing queue with impatient customers that can retry if they renege. We are interested in structural properties of the value function of the system as a function of the arrival rate
Boosting Object Recognition in Point Clouds by Saliency Detection
Object recognition in 3D point clouds is a challenging task, mainly when time
is an important factor to deal with, such as in industrial applications. Local
descriptors are an amenable choice whenever the 6 DoF pose of recognized
objects should also be estimated. However, the pipeline for this kind of
descriptors is highly time-consuming. In this work, we propose an update to the
traditional pipeline, by adding a preliminary filtering stage referred to as
saliency boost. We perform tests on a standard object recognition benchmark by
considering four keypoint detectors and four local descriptors, in order to
compare time and recognition performance between the traditional pipeline and
the boosted one. Results on time show that the boosted pipeline could turn out
up to 5 times faster, with the recognition rate improving in most of the cases
and exhibiting only a slight decrease in the others. These results suggest that
the boosted pipeline can speed-up processing time substantially with limited
impacts or even benefits in recognition accuracy.Comment: International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing (ICIAP)

Measuring Coverage in MNCH:A Validation Study Linking Population Survey Derived Coverage to Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health Care Records in Rural China
Accurate data on coverage of key maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) interventions are crucial for monitoring progress toward the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5. Coverage estimates are primarily obtained from routine population surveys through self-reporting, the validity of which is not well understood. We aimed to examine the validity of the coverage of selected MNCH interventions in Gongcheng County, China. We conducted a validation study by comparing women's self-reported coverage of MNCH interventions relating to antenatal and postnatal care, mode of delivery, and child vaccinations in a community survey with their paper- and electronic-based health care records, treating the health care records as the reference standard. Of 936 women recruited, 914 (97.6%) completed the survey. Results show that self-reported coverage of these interventions had moderate to high sensitivity (0.57 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.50-0.63] to 0.99 [95% CI: 0.98-1.00]) and low to high specificity (0 to 0.83 [95% CI: 0.80-0.86]). Despite varying overall validity, with the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) ranging between 0.49 [95% CI: 0.39-0.57] and 0.90 [95% CI: 0.88-0.92], bias in the coverage estimates at the population level was small to moderate, with the test to actual positive (TAP) ratio ranging between 0.8 and 1.5 for 24 of the 28 indicators examined. Our ability to accurately estimate validity was affected by several caveats associated with the reference standard. Caution should be exercised when generalizing the results to other settings. The overall validity of self-reported coverage was moderate across selected MNCH indicators. However, at the population level, self-reported coverage appears to have small to moderate degree of bias. Accuracy of the coverage was particularly high for indicators with high recorded coverage or low recorded coverage but high specificity. The study provides insights into the accuracy of self-reports based on a population survey in low- and middle-income countries. Similar studies applying an improved reference standard are warranted in the future
Seeing two faces together: preference formation in humans and rhesus macaques
Humans, great apes and old world monkeys show selective attention to faces depending on conspecificity, familiarity, and social status supporting the view that primates share similar face processing mechanisms. Although many studies have been done on face scanning strategy in monkeys and humans, the mechanisms influencing viewing preference have received little attention. To determine how face categories influence viewing preference in humans and rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), we performed two eye-tracking experiments using a visual preference task whereby pairs of faces from different species were presented simultaneously. The results indicated that viewing time was significantly influenced by the pairing of the face categories. Humans showed a strong bias towards an own-race face in an Asian–Caucasian condition. Rhesus macaques directed more attention towards non-human primate faces when they were paired with human faces, regardless of the species. When rhesus faces were paired with faces from Barbary macaques
(Macaca sylvanus) or chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), the novel species’ faces attracted more attention. These results
indicate that monkeys’ viewing preferences, as assessed by a visual preference task, are modulated by several factors,
species and dominance being the most influential
Measurement of the Branching Fraction of J/psi --> pi+ pi- pi0
Using 58 million J/psi and 14 million psi' decays obtained by the BESII
experiment, the branching fraction of J/psi --> pi+ pi- pi0 is determined. The
result is (2.10+/-0.12)X10^{-2}, which is significantly higher than previous
measurements.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, RevTex
First observation of psi(2S)-->K_S K_L
The decay psi(2S)-->K_S K_L is observed for the first time using psi(2S) data
collected with the Beijing Spectrometer (BESII) at the Beijing Electron
Positron Collider (BEPC); the branching ratio is determined to be
B(psi(2S)-->K_S K_L) = (5.24\pm 0.47 \pm 0.48)\times 10^{-5}. Compared with
J/psi-->K_S K_L, the psi(2S) branching ratio is enhanced relative to the
prediction of the perturbative QCD ``12%'' rule. The result, together with the
branching ratios of psi(2S) decays to other pseudoscalar meson pairs
(\pi^+\pi^- and K^+K^-), is used to investigate the relative phase between the
three-gluon and the one-photon annihilation amplitudes of psi(2S) decays.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
