Parallel processing using graphic processing units (GPUs) has attracted much research interest in recent years. Parallel computation can be applied to evolution strategy (ES) for processing individuals in a population, but evolutionary strategies are time consuming to solve large computational problems or complex fitness functions. In this paper we describe the implementation of an improved ES for optic disk detection in retinal images using the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) environment. In the experimental results we show that the computational time for optic disk detection task has a speedup factor of 5x and 7x compared to an implementation on a mainstream CPU

The text analyses the origin and development of housing-block units, known in Mexico as "multifamiliares" and implemented within a formula of urban design that separates the pedestrian of the car, the so called superblock, and who were protagonists of the formula of the Mexican state in the implementation of housing policies for the city of México. There are reviewed the origins and initial proposals for housing buildings in the final forties, specifically the Unidad Modelo and Unidad Esperanza and other bigger housing-block units design by Mario Pani and built between 1946 and 1965. The development of the superblock and of the housing-block units reflects the influence of the ideas ofthe Modern Movement about urban design and new housing typology. New urban design with the superblock and it's ideal of establishing a new urban order in the urban fabric through a bigger scale and higher density. And with the new typology ofthe housingblock units as representing the aspirations to live in the modernity with a series of integrated services and wide free spaces

    Thermal equilibrium in Einstein's elevator

We report fully relativistic molecular-dynamics simulations that verify the appearance of thermal equilibrium of a classical gas inside a uniformly accelerated container. The numerical experiments confirm that the local momentum distribution in this system is very well approximated by the J\"uttner function -- originally derived for a flat spacetime -- via the Tolman-Ehrenfest effect. Moreover, it is shown that when the acceleration or the container size is large enough, the global momentum distribution can be described by the so-called modified J\"uttner function, which was initially proposed as an alternative to the J\"uttner function

Comparative analysis between Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and The Lord of the Rings: a thematic comparison

Trabajo de fin de Grado. Grado en Estudios Ingleses. Curso académico 2015-2016[EN]This project attempts to show the thematic relation which exists between Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (15th Century) and The Lord of the Rings (20th Century). Even though both pieces are five centuries far from each other, they share different themes with their similarities and their differences. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight could be seen as the most representative work in which we can learn quite about knights, their traditions, and their time in England. Meanwhile, The Lord of the Rings can be considered the perfect trilogy where we can find, apart from knights, different races and different problems which knights and everybody else will have to face in Middle-Earth. Only three main themes will be discussed and analysed in which we will be able to see their similarities in both stories, and their differences about how the same theme can be explored from different perspectives.

Background: The clinical characteristics and physio-pathogenic mechanisms of asthma in patients older than 60 years appear to differ from the behavior described for other age groups. Therefore, the effectiveness of medications for elderly patients with asthma should not be extrapolated from studies conducted on teenagers or young adults. Objective: The study aimed to establish the clinical effect of montelukast 10 mg in elderly patients with mild and moderate asthma compared to its effect on young adults. Method: A prospective cohort study was conducted during 12 weeks of follow-up, which consecutively included the total population of adult patients attended by a group of 21 general practitioners, between July and December 2016. Young adults (18-59 years) and older adults were included (60 years or older) with mild or moderate asthma, which, according to the criteria of his treating physician, had been prescribed montelukast 10 mg/day. The variables of interest were: use of inhaled corticosteroids during the last month, use of inhaled beta-2 adrenergic agonists as a rescue in the last month, having attended the emergency service during the last month due to an asthma attack, presence of wheezing in the physical examination, the number of attacks in the last month and the number of days without symptoms in the last month. Results: A total of 126 patients entered the cohort and 104 completed the follow-up, of which 29% were older adults. On admission, 65.4% of patients (68/104) had used rescue inhaled beta2 in the last month and had been using schemes with corticosteroids. After 12 weeks of follow-up, 58.1% (43/74) of the young adults required treatment schedules with corticosteroids, while in the elderly, only 36.7% of the patients (11/30) required this treatment scheme (p-value: 0.047). Regarding the use of rescue inhaled beta-2 at 12 weeks, 55% of young adults reported using them, compared to 33.3% of older adults (p-value: 0.041). Conclusion: In this cohort of patients, treated with montelukast 10 mg/day for 12 weeks, there was a reduction of broncho-obstructive symptoms and exacerbations of the disease. In older adults compared to young adults, a greater red

In recent years, the return of the usage of Artificial Neural Networks has lead to the greatest improvements in the field of Artificial Intelligence, due to the huge diversity of different applications that deep learning models has in a large variety of research fields, and also the evolution of information processing systems capacity. This thesis aims to study which deep neural networks models are most suitable for photo enhancement, to generate images with certain desired characteristics. Model selection has been done by comparing the both supervised, Convolutional Neural Networks, and unsupervised models, Generative Adversarial Networks. It has been demonstrated that Generative Adversarial Networks have great potential by showing results that compete with the state of the art. The chosen model is a Generative Adversarial model which outperforms the rest in terms of a combination of enhancement quality and time taken in the process. Moreover, since the model is compatible with mobile devices it has been integrated and evaluated in a BQ smartphone, to proof its viability on mobile devices.Doble Grado en Ingeniería Informática y Administración de Empresa
