Rydberg optical Feshbach resonances in cold gases

    Get PDF
We propose a novel scheme to efficiently tune the scattering length of two colliding ground-state atoms by off-resonantly coupling the scattering-state to an excited Rydberg-molecular state using laser light. For the s-wave scattering of two colliding 87Rb{^{87}}\mathrm{Rb} atoms, we demonstrate that the effective optical length and pole strength of this Rydberg optical Feshbach resonance can be tuned over several orders of magnitude, while incoherent processes and losses are minimised. Given the ubiquity of Rydberg molecular states, this technique should be generally applicable to homo-nuclear atomic pairs as well as to atomic mixtures with s-wave (or even p-wave) scattering.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. Sumu-Mayangna vernacular housing in Nicaragua. Evolution and sustainability

    Get PDF
The research focuses on the study of the influence of historical and social events on the Mayangna traditional dwelling. A bioclimatic analysis, as well as a comparation of the level of thermal comfort of four different dwelling models of each relevant stage of Mayangna history is performed. The Mayangna understanding of nature was the basis for a housing system based on meeting their basic needs. They created a modular, socially and ecologically sustainable system based on their way of life and the "biribiri" system (taking care of each other). Mayangna life is currently the consequence of local political interests, western influences, globalization, and loss of traditions. However, climate change is currently their biggest problem. The research analyzes the four main historical periods in the evolution of this civilization: (a) their arrival in Nicaraguan territory (ca. 2000 b.c.), (b) the Spanish colonization and the impact of foreign cultures (from 15th century), (c) the Sandinista revolution (1979-1989), and finally (d) the present day with the influences of modern neoliberal models (1989 onward). The interrelation between their cosmogonic view, the environment, political-social events and the transformations of their homes was analyzed, creating a typological model for each period. A comparative study of the thermal behavior between these housing models, is carried out. The analysis considers aspects related to thermal behavior and humidity with the support of dedicated software. With the bioclimatic analysis of the housing models, it is possible to observe an important reduction in the level of thermal comfort of these constructions over time, with the worst results during the Sandinista revolution. The utilization of modern industrialized materials not only leads to the erosion of cultural traditions but also directly and indirectly impacts the transformation of people's way of life. Universidad de Málaga. Field tests for the ESPRESSO data analysis software

    Get PDF
The data analysis software (DAS) for VLT ESPRESSO is aimed to set a new benchmark in the treatment of spectroscopic data towards the extremely-large-telescope era, providing carefully designed, fully interactive recipes to take care of complex analysis operations (e.g. radial velocity estimation in stellar spectra, interpretation of the absorption features in quasar spectra). A few months away from the instrument's first light, the DAS is now mature for science validation, with most algorithms already implemented and operational. In this paper, I will showcase the DAS features which are currently employed on high-resolution HARPS and UVES spectra to assess the scientific reliability of the recipes and their range of application. I will give a glimpse on the science that will be possible when ESPRESSO data become available, with a particular focus on the novel approach that has been adopted to simultaneously fit the emission continuum and the absorption lines in the Lyman-alpha forest of quasar spectra.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure; proceedings of ADASS XXVI, accepted by ASP Conference Serie

Data Analysis Software for the ESPRESSO Science Machine

    Get PDF
ESPRESSO is an extremely stable high-resolution spectrograph which is currently being developed for the ESO VLT. With its groundbreaking characteristics it is aimed to be a "science machine", i.e., a fully-integrated instrument to directly extract science information from the observations. In particular, ESPRESSO will be the first ESO instrument to be equipped with a dedicated tool for the analysis of data, the Data Analysis Software (DAS), consisting in a number of recipes to analyze both stellar and quasar spectra. Through the new ESO Reflex GUI, the DAS (which will implement new algorithms to analyze quasar spectra) is aimed to get over the shortcomings of the existing software providing multiple iteration modes and full interactivity with the data.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; proceedings of ADASS XXI

El Método ABN como articulador efectivo de aprendizajes matemáticos en la infancia. Experiencias en profesores y profesoras de ciclo inicial en Chile

Results are presented abut a professional development workshop based on the ABN Method for learning mathematics (N = 27), conducted in Talca, Chile, for Pre-K and Primary in-service teachers (children from 4 to 7 years of age in charge). The workshop is aimed at nursery school teachers and first grade teachers. The ABN Method is based on the significant learning of the decimal number system and on the complete domain of operations and their properties, which are learned and assimilated at the same time by children from the early stages of teaching. The results of the study show that the participation of teachers in the workshop generated significant changes in a set of teachers’ beliefs, as well as a favorable change in the perception regarding the mathematical ability of their students. Finally, teachers report a greater conceptual clarity regarding the sequencing of contents and the purpose of the mathematical activities they perform in the classroom. The results and implications of this workshop are discusse
