    Influence of Reciprocal links in Social Networks

    In this Letter, we empirically study the influence of reciprocal links, in order to understand its role in affecting the structure and function of directed social networks. Experimental results on two representative datesets, Sina Weibo and Douban, demonstrate that the reciprocal links indeed play a more important role than non-reciprocal ones in both spreading information and maintaining the network robustness. In particular, the information spreading process can be significantly enhanced by considering the reciprocal effect. In addition, reciprocal links are largely responsible for the connectivity and efficiency of directed networks. This work may shed some light on the in-depth understanding and application of the reciprocal effect in directed online social networks

    Locating influential nodes in hypergraphs via fuzzy collective influence

    Complex contagion phenomena, such as the spread of information or contagious diseases, often occur among the population due to higher-order interactions between individuals. Individuals who can be represented by nodes in a network may play different roles in the spreading process, and thus finding the most influential nodes in a network has become a crucial topic in network science for applications such as viral marketing, rumor suppression, and disease control. To solve the problem of identifying nodes that have high influence in a complex system, we propose a higher-order distance-based fuzzy centrality methods (HDF and EHDF) that are customized for a hypergraph which can characterize higher-order interactions between nodes via hyperedges. The methods we proposed assume that the influence of a node is reliant on the neighboring nodes with a certain higher-order distance. We compare the proposed methods with the baseline centrality methods to verify their effectiveness. Experimental results on six empirical hypergraphs show that the proposed methods could better identify influential nodes, especially showing plausible performance in finding the top influential nodes. Our proposed theoretical framework for identifying influential nodes could provide insights into how higher-order topological structure can be used for tasks such as vital node identification, influence maximization, and network dismantling

    The Driving Force for 2014 Dengue Outbreak in Guangdong, China.

    Dengue fever has rapidly spread in recent decades to become the most globally expansive viral vector-borne disease. In mainland China, a number of dengue outbreaks have been reported since 1978, but the worst epidemic in decades, involving 45230 cases and 76 imported cases, resulting in six deaths in Guangdong province, emerged in 2014. Reasons for this ongoing surge in dengue, both imported and autochthonous, are currently unclear and demand urgent investigation. Here, a seasonally-driven dynamic epidemiological model was used to simulate dengue transmission data recorded from the unprecedented outbreak. Sensitivity analysis demonstrate that delayed mosquito control, the continuous importations between the end of April to the early of July, the transmission of asymptomatic dengue infections, and the abnormally high precipitation from May to August might be the causal factors for the unprecedented outbreak. Our results suggested that the earlier and more frequent control measures in targeting immature and adult mosquitoes were effective in preventing larger outbreaks, and enhanced frontier health and quarantine from the end of April to the early of July for international communications and travelers

    Functional Genetic Diversity and Culturability of Petroleum-Degrading Bacteria Isolated From Oil-Contaminated Soils

    In this study, we compared the culturability of aerobic bacteria isolated from long-term oil-contaminated soils via enrichment and direct-plating methods; bacteria were cultured at 30°C or ambient temperatures. Two soil samples were collected from two sites in the Shengli oilfield located in Dongying, China. One sample (S0) was close to the outlet of an oil-production water treatment plant, and the other sample (S1) was located 500 m downstream of the outlet. In total, 595 bacterial isolates belonging to 56 genera were isolated, distributed in Actinobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacterioidetes, and Proteobacteria. It was interesting that Actinobacteria and Firmicutes were not detected from the 16S rRNA gene clone library. The results suggested the activation of rare species during culture. Using the enrichment method, 239 isolates (31 genera) and 96 (22 genera) isolates were obtained at ambient temperatures and 30°C, respectively, from S0 soil. Using the direct-plating method, 97 isolates (15 genera) and 163 isolates (20 genera) were obtained at ambient temperatures and 30°C, respectively, from two soils. Of the 595 isolates, 244 isolates (41.7% of total isolates) could degrade n-hexadecane. A greater number of alkane-degraders was isolated at ambient temperatures using the enrichment method, suggesting that this method could significantly improve bacterial culturability. Interestingly, the proportion of alkane degrading isolates was lower in the isolates obtained using enrichment method than that obtained using direct-plating methods. Considering the greater species diversity of isolates obtained via the enrichment method, this technique could be used to increase the diversity of the microbial consortia. Furthermore, phenol hydroxylase genes (pheN), medium-chain alkane monooxygenases genes (alkB and CYP153A), and long-chain alkane monooxygenase gene (almA) were detected in 60 isolates (11 genotypes), 91 isolates (27 genotypes) and 93 isolates (24 genotypes), and 34 isolates (14 genotypes), respectively. This study could provide new insights into microbial resources from oil fields or other environments, and this information will be beneficial for bioremediation of petroleum contamination and for other industrial applications

The paper calculates the basic reproduction number and studies the effects of various immunization schemes. The final size relation is derived for the network epidemic model. While a uniform, mass-immunization strategy helps control the prevalence, a targeted immunization strategy focusing on specific groups with given connectivity may better control an epidemic

    Visualized exploratory spatiotemporal analysis of hand-foot-mouth disease in southern China

    Objectives: In epidemiological research, major studies have focused on theoretical models; however, few methods of visual analysis have been used to display the patterns of disease distribution.Design: For this study, a method combining the space-time cube (STC) with space-time scan statistics (STSS) was used to analyze the pattern of incidence of hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) in Guangdong Province from May 2008 to March 2009. In this research, STC was used to display the spatiotemporal pattern of incidence of HFMD, and STSS were used to detect the local aggregations of the disease.Setting: The hand-foot-mouth disease data were obtained from Guangdong Province from May 2008 to March 2009, with a total of 68,130 cases.Results: The STC analysis revealed a differential pattern of HFMD incidence among different months and cities and also showed that the population density and average precipitation are correlated with the incidence of HFMD. The STSS analysis revealed that the most likely aggregation includes the Shenzhen, Foshan and Dongguan populations, which are the most developed regions in Guangdong Province.Conclusion: Both STC and STSS are efficient tools for the exploratory data analysis of disease transmission.
